Do you have to legally open the door for a police officer in Georgia? What to know

Many Georgians might get a knock at the door, and it's the police. But do you have to legally open the door? According to Georgia's Expungement Lawyers, the law gives residents strong protections inside their homes, including the right not to open the door to law enforcement under most circumstances. Police can legally conduct what's known as a 'knock-and-talk,' which means they are allowed to approach your home, knock on the door, and request to speak with you. However, you are not required to engage with them or let them inside unless they have the legal authority to enter. "If they do not have a warrant, then they do not have any right to come in," the legal group said. The first right every person has is the right to remain silent. If officers insist they are coming in, you're encouraged to ask to see a warrant. If they don't have one, they cannot legally enter, unless there are emergency circumstances such as someone being in immediate danger, or if illegal activity is clearly visible from outside. Home searches in Georgia typically occur under three scenarios: Warranted Search – When police obtain a search warrant from a magistrate judge based on probable cause. Exigent Circumstances – When urgent conditions, like danger to life or destruction of evidence, justify entry without a warrant. Consent Searches – When a resident voluntarily allows officers to enter and search the home. Attorneys warn that if you do give consent, even verbally, that search becomes legally valid, and any evidence found could be used in court. A young family in Alabama is grieving after a devastating boat accident led to the death of 27-year-old Brittney Sherman. Sherman, of Wilmer, Alabama, was boating in Bayou Sara near Saraland in Mobile County on June 15 along with her husband, 30-year-old Cody Sherman, and the couple's four children. Advertisement The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed to Fox News Digital that two boats were involved in a collision at approximately 5:50 p.m. Sunday. Authorities said the incident involved a 20-foot Avid Center Console vessel occupied by the Sherman family and a 26-foot Regulator Center Console. According to officials, the impact of the collision caused Brittney to be thrown overboard. New details released on mysterious fatal shooting of 13-year-old Pasadena boy

More than three years ago, 13-year-old Iran Moreno was playing video games in the bedroom of his Pasadena home when a bullet careened through the window and killed him. On Monday, police revealed new details in the unsolved murder case that they hope can help bring justice for the boy's tragic slaying. On Nov. 20, 2021, the driver of a gray Ford Fusion stopped in the parking lot across from Moreno's home on North Raymond Avenue, according to authorities. The passenger of the vehicle got out and fired two gunshots east, one of which hit Moreno. At the time, police said they didn't believe Moreno or his family were the targets of the gunfire. The fatal shooting came amid a rash of shootings at the time that drew more than 100 community members, city leaders and police to hold a vigil for the victims of gun violence. Newly enhanced surveillance video of the shooting revealed that part of the license plate number of the Ford Fusion was QJ117, according to a Pasadena Police Department post. The video also showed the shooter, who appeared to be a Black male between 33 and 37 years old, between 6'0' and 6'1' and 185 to 195 pounds, police said. He was wearing a red and black North Face hooded sweatshirt. Police have asked anyone who has more information about the identity of the suspect to contact the department at (626) 744-4241 or call homicide investigators at (626) 744-4583. Tips can also be reported anonymously by texting Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
