Wildcats advance to Memorial Cup semifinal with 6-2 win over Oceanic

RIMOUSKI - Gabe Smith scored two goals and had two assists as the Moncton Wildcats advanced to the Memorial Cup semifinal with a 6-2 win over the Rimouski Oceanic on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats will take on the London Knights in Friday's semifinal. The winner of that matchup meets the Medicine Hat Tigers in Sunday's final.
Juraj Pekarcik and Julius Sumpf added a goal and an assist each, Etienne Morin also scored, and Mathis Rousseau made 32 saves for Moncton (1-2), which lost games to London and Medicine Hat earlier in the round robin.
Alex Mercier added an empty-net goal and had an assist. Preston Lounsbury pitched in with two assists.
The Wildcats captured the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League title in Rimouski last week, winning the championship series in six games over the Oceanic.
Mathieu Cataford and Maël St-Denis replied for Rimouski (0-3), which exits the tournament after qualifying as the host team.
Mathis Langevin stopped 26 shots at Colisée Financière Sun Life.
The Oceanic controlled the first period, but the Wildcats shifted the momentum with two goals early in the second to take a 3-2 lead.
Pekarcik deflected Dylan MacKinnon's shot from the high slot to beat Langevin at 1:27 and tie the game. Smith then put Moncton ahead at 4:05, capitalizing on a failed clearance from Luke Coughlin.
Loke Johansson kept the lead intact with a goal-line clearance in the dying moments of the second period while Moncton was killing a penalty.
Jacob Mathieu's shot deflected over Rousseau and into the blue paint with seven seconds left in the frame, but the Wildcats defenceman swept the puck away.
Early in the third period, Moncton poured it on.
Sumpf first missed a breakaway before Vidicek ripped a shot off the post. Morin then made no mistake, converting a point shot at 4:02 to double the lead.
Rousseau continued a strong outing with a save on Cataford less than a minute later. Anthony Paré later struck iron with a slapshot midway through the period.
Rimouski pulled the goalie for an extra attacker with 2:33 remaining, but couldn't generate a quality chance before Smith scored an empty-net goal with 1:48 left. Mercier added another with 59 seconds remaining.
The Oceanic came out strong in the first period with their season on the line, dominating the shot count at 17-6.
St-Denis energized the home crowd with a big open-ice hit on Maxime Côté in the opening minutes.
Rousseau turned aside two shots from Thomas Belzil and also denied Maxime Coursol's scoring chance to keep the game scoreless early.
The Wildcats opened the scoring when Sumpf finished a cross-ice feed from Pekarcik at 7:39 in the first period for Moncton's first goal by a forward in the tournament.
Rimouski continued to pepper Rousseau with pucks until St-Denis broke through with a backhand on the blocker side to even the score at 13:27.
Cataford put the Oceanic up 2-1 with just under three minutes remaining in the period, deflecting a feed from Olivier Théberge to complete a pretty passing play and lift the fans out of their seats.

Jets Defensive Prospect Puts Up Positive Results In First Professional Season; Tougher Challenges Await Next Season

Alfons Freij / Winnipeg Jets defensive prospect Alfons Freij completed his first season of professional hockey, putting up positive results. The 19-year-old scored two goals and added eight points in 29 games for IF Björklöven in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second-tier league. HockeyAllsvenskan has proved to be a great league for developing young prospects. Advertisement Freij will make his SHL debut next season, playing with Timrå IK, a team featuring several NHL-affiliated prospects and former NHLer Magnus Pääjärvi. The Jets selected Freij with the 37th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The second-round pick was the first selection made by the Jets, and the Jets were given plenty of praise for the selection. Listed at 6'1, 196 lbs, Freij is a wonderful skater with strong offensive instincts. He's known for his playmaking ability, and he's beginning to round out his defensive game. His excellent skating is highlighted by both the speed he generates, but also his edge work. He can distribute his weight onto either foot, which makes him a handful for forwards to cover when engaging on the forecheck or trying to defend him at their blue line. His skating and frame should allow him to continue to develop defensively while maintaining his outstanding transition ability. Freij was left off of Sweden's World Junior team this season but will likely play a large role at this year's event. With Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Tom Willander, Theo Lindstein, and Rasmus Bergqvist all aging out of the tournament, roster spots are open for the taking, and Freij looks prepared to take over. Advertisement Although he is still 2-3 years away from fighting for a roster spot on the Jets, Freij is trending in the right direction. Another season or two playing in the SHL will be great for his development before he transitions to North American professional hockey with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL, following a similar path to Elias Salomonsson, who looks poised to crack the Jets roster sometime soon. St. Thomas' Duque, Western's O'Brien are the Broward Flag Football Coaches of the Year

At Western, James O'Brien has seen the Wildcats become a consistent state title contender in flag football for several years. At St. Thomas Aquinas, Derek Duque has been developing the Raiders into a contender as well in recent years. This season both coaches took their respective squads further than any other in Broward County as each advanced to the regional finals in their respective classifications. O'Brien and Duque are the Broward County Flag Football Co-Coaches of the Year. After a rare season in which his team exited the playoffs in the first round, O'Brien guided Western back to the regional final in Class 4A - now the largest classification with the state expanding its alignment to four classes this season. The Wildcats remained one of the state's top teams, picking up wins against several top programs including Aquinas before losing in the regional championship game to Miami Palmetto. Western once again had one of the most prolific offenses in the state led by seniors Maddison Manragh and Teetee Mortimer as well as junior TT McFadden, who combined to score 38 touchdowns and amass over 2,200 yards. While a trip to the state final four has eluded St. Thomas Aquinas, the Raiders have been on the doorstep for the past three seasons. Aquinas advanced to the regional finals in Class 3A with a 16-2 record - one of their best in school history - before losing a close game to Homestead. Duque has the program on the rise, however, and thriving despite graduating senior quarterback Sherice Newton - the Miami Herald's Player of the Year. Sophomore Aimee Colson and junior Emmi Merhi return next season to try to lead the Raiders in another bid for a state championship.

He averaged 21.5 points, 14.9 rebounds, and shot 72% from the field as a senior. Potter, 7-foot-1, returns to his hometown after two seasons at Miami (OH). A former Lexington Catholic standout, he appeared in 56 games for the RedHawks, averaging 6.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and shooting 36.7 percent from three as a sophomore. Hawthorne had a full-circle moment where UK posted on Twitter: A 'how it started vs. how it's going' image showing him as a young boy sitting next to legendary coach Joe B. Hall's statue, and now, doing it again before move-in. In the video, Hawthorne said he's ready to get to work. Alongside the other new Wildcats, two more arrived this afternoon and evening as Kam Williams and Jasper Johnson shared their goals for this upcoming season. Advertisement Williams, the Tulane transfer, was the first transfer commit of this portal class as he chose the Cats right in the thick of the NCAA Tournament. A player with legit NBA prospects going forward, watching his growth this year should be fun. Johnson is the most familiar name to the BBN, as the top-40 prospect has been on the fanbase's radar for quite some time. Now, it is official.
