Australia and Philippines Urge China to Explain Massive Military Buildup at Asia Security Summit

Australia and Philippines Urge China to Explain Massive Military Buildup at Asia Security Summit

Time of India2 days ago

During the
Shangri-La Dialogue
in Singapore, China's increasing military presence in the
Asia-Pacific
was the focus of tensions, as
Australia
and the
Philippines
made strong appeals for transparency and restraint from Beijing. Australia's Defence Minister
Richard Marles
had characterized China's rapid military build-up as "the most significant increase in military capability and conventional build-up by any nation since World War II," and called on
China
to explain its intentions and offer "strategic reassurance" to its neighbors.
Marles highlighted that the size and secrecy of China's expansion are raising alarm throughout the region. 'It's not just the size of the expansion, but the lack of clear strategic intent from China. What we want to see is strategic transparency and reassurance,' he said in a media briefing. Marles drew the contrast with Australia's own strategy, that
Canberra
publishes its national defence review and strategy in an open manner, that this gives'total strategic clarity and assurance to our neighbors, the region, and the world.'
The summit, hosted by the
International Institute for Strategic Studies
, had China responding by sending a lower-level delegation and withdrawing from a scheduled speech, leaving the stage free for sharp criticism from the US, its allies, and the regional partners. Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. branded China's behavior in the
South China Sea
as "absolutely irresponsible and reckless," citing recurring face-offs between Chinese and Philippine ships. "The world cannot tolerate" such tactics, Teodoro said, echoing calls for rules-based international order.

US Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened an "imminent" attack on Taiwan, blaming China for wanting regional hegemony—a charge China strongly denied, instead accusing the US of being the actual destabilizing force in the Asia-Pacific. French President
Emmanuel Macron
was also present at the summit, calling for tighter European-Asian ties and receiving a sharp rebuke from China for comparisons between Taiwan and Ukraine.
As tensions escalate in the region, Australia and the Philippines and their allies assert that transparency, compliance with international law, and respect for sovereignty are paramount to ensuring stability and peace in the Indo-Pacific.

Civic workers in Kodagu launch indefinite strike seeking service regularisation

Madikeri: Civic workers in Kodagu district have launched an indefinite strike to press their various demands, including the regularisation of services. The strike involves more than 300 staff members, including sanitation workers, drivers, and data entry personnel. "Despite drawing govt's attention to our various demands several times, there was no follow-up. In protest, district-wide garbage collection and office work, except water supply, were suspended from May 31. The protest will continue until the demands are met. If govt ignores our pleas, we will stop the water supply too," cautioned K Sathyanarayan, district president of the Civic Service Employees Association. The workers are seeking equal benefits as state govt employees. Additional demands include service regularisation under the Daily Wages and Welfare Development Act, complete civic worker recruitment in municipalities, SFC salary payments, special recruitment status for water supply staff, access to Jyoti Sanjeevini healthcare facilities, and civil servant classification for IT staff, accountants, computer operators, drivers, and sanitary supervisors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dinheiro pra você organizar suas contas! Banco BV Saiba Mais Undo The strike by 300 workers has disrupted essential services, particularly waste collection and disposal across the district. The workers said they will continue the strike until their demands receive attention. However, in Virajpet town, when MLA AS Ponnanna, also chief minister's legal adviser, personally operated a garbage collection vehicle and tried to carry the garbage himself, the workers withdrew the strike and did their regular duty. Ponnanna took the initiative to address the town's cleanliness concerns by participating in waste collection with private workers. When the workers declined Ponnanna's request to resume work, he personally operated a garbage collection vehicle. Ponnanna noted that while the state govt holds authority to resolve the workers' issues, he did not receive any formal petition from local municipal workers regarding their demands. Virajpet Municipality president Dechamma said despite two days of negotiations involving municipal members and the MLA, the workers initially maintained their stance. However, following the MLA's personal involvement and assurances, the workers ultimately withdrew their protest and returned to work in Virajpet. During the discussions, Municipality chief officer P Nachappa was present.

Stoking unrest ahead of Operation Bluestar anniversary: Ambedkar statue defaced near Phillaur, terror group SFJ takes responsibility

Jalandhar: Two months after a Khalistan flag and graffiti reading "Sikhs are not Hindus" were placed on Dr B R Ambedkar's statue in Nangal village near Phillaur at the behest of banned terror group Sikhs For Justice (SFC), the statue at the same place was defaced with black paint, stamped with 'SFJ', and a Khalistan flag was put around it. SFJ general counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun released footage of the defaced statue on Monday morning, as he called for the blackening of Ambedkar's statues on June 6. He alleged that Ambedkar "weaponised the Indian Constitution, which is the backbone of the infamous Operation Bluestar". SFJ's bid to stoke communal flames comes ahead of Punjab observing the 41st anniversary of the Army operation at Golden Temple. Police cleaned the statue in the morning and started scanning CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. Footage of a CCTV camera installed near the statue showed a man with covered face and wearing a cap spraying the black paint on the statue. Police suspect there could be more persons involved in the case. During the day, dalit activists gathered around the stage and protested against the incident. They also blocked Nakodar-Nurmahal road for some time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Click Here - This Might Save You From Losing Money Expertinspector Click Here Undo On the night intervening March 30 and 31, a Khalistan flag and graffiti reading 'Sikhs are not Hindus' were placed on Ambedkar's statue at the same place at SFJ's behest. Later, Jalandhar rural police arrested two men — Sukhbir Singh and Avtar Singh from Nurpur Chatha village near Nakoda. Police also added provisions of UAPA in the case, as the accused received funds from abroad to vitiate the atmosphere in Punjab. Later, a new statue was installed at the same site. But it was defaced on Monday. Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said a case had been registered. MSID:: 121573682 413 |Bid

Trump and Xi will likely speak this week, White House says

WASHINGTON -President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will likely speak this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday, days after Trump accused China of violating an agreement to roll back tariffs and trade restrictions. Leavitt is the third top Trump aide to forecast an imminent call between the two leaders to iron out differences on last month's tariff agreement in Geneva, among larger trade issues. It was not immediately clear when the two leaders will speak. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday that Trump and Xi would speak "very soon" to iron out trade issues including a dispute over critical minerals and China's restrictions on exports of certain minerals. Trump said on Friday he was sure that he would speak to Xi. China said in April that the two leaders had not had a conversation recently. On Saturday, the U.S. Trade Representative's office announced it would continue to exclude certain solar manufacturing equipment and other products from existing tariffs on Chinese goods until August 31, offering a three-month extension while talks with Beijing continue. Bessent led negotiations with China in Geneva last month that resulted in a temporary truce in the trade war between the world's two biggest economies, but progress since then has been slow, the U.S. Treasury chief told Fox News last week. The U.S.-China agreement to dial back triple-digit tariffs for 90 days prompted a massive relief rally in global stocks. But it did nothing to address the underlying reasons for Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods, mainly longstanding U.S. complaints about China's state-dominated, export-driven economic model, leaving those issues for future talks. A U.S. trade court on Wednesday ruled that Trump overstepped his authority in imposing the bulk of his tariffs on imports from China and other countries under an emergency powers act. But less than 24 hours later, a federal appeals court reinstated the tariffs, saying it was pausing the trade court ruling to consider the government's appeal. The appeals court ordered the plaintiffs to respond by June 5 and the administration to respond by June 9.
