Neurodiversity Celebration Week: What is it all about?

BBC News17-03-2025

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is from 17 - 23 March in 2025. It's when people all over the UK are encouraged to think about and celebrate neurodiversity, as well as challenge stereotypes people might have about it.Neurodiversity is a word used to describe the different thinking styles that influence how people communicate with the world around them.It is an umbrella term - a word that sums up lots of different things. It includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and Tourette's.Thousands of schools have signed up to take part, to celebrate and raise awareness about what it means to be neurodivergent. Siena Castellon started Neurodiversity Celebration week in 2018, she said: "People often focus on the challenges of neurological diversity. "I wanted to change the narrative and create a balanced view which focuses equally on our talents and strengths."
What does neurodivergent mean?
The word neurodivergent comes from two parts - neurological and divergent.Neurological is a term for things to do with our brain, and divergent is about moving away from a set path.It is a term used for lots of people who have different thinking or communication styles. These include conditions like, autism and ADHD, which can influence how people communicate with others and the world around them. There's also dyslexia, which influences how people read and spell, or dyspraxia, which can influence movement and co-ordination.
Neurodivergence can refer to a number of different things. Some people might like to refer to specific conditions instead. However, there can also be some crossover within neurodiversity such as autism and ADHD.Around 15-20% of all the people living in the world are thought to be neurodivergent. There are lots of famous people who are neurodivergent, including superstar gymnast Simone Biles who has ADHD, presenter and conservationist Chris Packham who is autistic, space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock who is dyslexic, and singers Billie Eilish and Lewis Capaldi have Tourette's.
Mateo, Riley and Lucy-Lu all go to the same school, and they are all neurodivergent.Mateo is autistic, and says he struggles with certain foods. He wears ear protectors when things are noisy. Lucy-Lu has ADHD and dyslexia, and says she finds it hard to focus in school, and will often fidget. She also uses ear protectors sometimes.Riley has ADHD, and says he finds it tricky when he can't deal with his emotions if something he does not like happens.Luckily in their school, they have lots of different things to help them throughout the day, including stand-up desks, sensory walls and activities, and places to go if they feel overwhelmed. However, not everyone has access to the same support.
Riley, Mateo and Lucy-Lu's tips to make sure EVERYONE feels included:
1. Never tease or make fun of someone for being different or finding something difficult.2. Be kind, encouraging and understanding.3. Remember that you have the power to make a BIG difference to someone who could be having a difficult time.
If you are neurodivergent, you can get support in school, from family and friends and if you need it, from the NHS.Remember you can always talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling. If you're not sure who you would like to talk to, you could ring Childline on 0800 1111.

Glastonbury welcomes back pop star for 'secret set' two years after breakdown

Lewis Capaldi's 2023 Glastonbury Festival set left the nation in tears as he broke down on stage – now, two years on, he could be set for a comeback. The Someone You Loved hitmaker has been absent from the spotlight since he struggled to finish his performance at Worthy Farm due to vocal issues and a Tourette's flare-up. During his tune Bruises, he asked the thousands-strong crowd for help, telling them, 'Sing with me, as loud as you can,' fighting back the waterworks. In recent months, the performer has made a slow return to public life, having previously cancelled all work commitments to focus on his health and mental well-being. Consequently, the Mail on Sunday reports that Lewis could make a surprise appearance at Glasto 2025, which kicks off on June 25 until 29. According to the paper, the 28-year-old will play in the 'secret slot' on the iconic Pyramid Stage on the Friday. He will follow Alanis Morrisette, whose set will begin at 6:15pm and end at 7:15pm. There'll then be an hour to fill before Biffy Clyro at quarter past eight. If the whispers are true, Lewis will join a host of big stars on the Glastonbury lineup this year. Olivia Rodrigo and The 1975 are headlining, as well as Neil Young. Meanwhile, Sir Rod Stewart will play the coveted Legends Slot, although doubt has been cast over his appearance in recent days after the 80-year-old cancelled a string of gigs due to sickness. As for Lewis, his mighty comeback will surely be music to the ears of his fans. Following his crushing Glastonbury set two summers back, Lewis was full of apologies. 'Glastonbury, I'm really sorry. I'm a bit annoyed with myself,' he said at the time. Shortly after, Lewis announced he would be taking a break for the 'foreseeable future' to 'get [his] mental and physical health in order'. He admitted it was the 'most difficult decision' he's ever had to make, but it was 'obvious' things couldn't continue as they were. Lewis explained that he still needed to 'adjust' to the impact Tourette's was having on his life. The Scottish songwriter has spoken openly about living with the condition, with which he was diagnosed in September 2022. It featured heavily in his 2023 NTA-winning documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now, in which he also discussed the pressures of fame and his rapid rise to stardom. Latest sightings of Lewis include when he actually returned to Glastonbury last year as a punter, putting in a low-profile appearance and blending in with fellow revellers during Dua Lipa's set. A source told MailOnline at the time: 'He met a group of friends at Dua Lipa, and there was loads of hugging going on. 'He looked like he was having the best time, finger in the air—singing along. We could all hear him. But then he left after a couple of songs with all his mates.' Another insider told The Sun that Lewis looked 'so happy' and said 'how pleased he was to be back at Worthy Farm'. Then, last month, Lewis gave his first live performance since embarking on a brief hiatus. In an unexpected but pleasant moment, he showed up as a surprise guest at Tom Walker's show for Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), which works in suicide prevention, at Assembly Halls in Edinburgh. Lewis sang six songs, including chart-topper Someone You Loved, with fans present later saying on social media that it was 'the best thing ever' to see him. Others said it left them 'close to tears', while Tom was 'delighted' that Lewis said yes at the 'last minute'. More Trending 'We've bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at [festivals] and events, and he's a total legend,' he told the BBC. 'I know how much pressure this industry can put on artists at times, especially after a bit of a break. 'So, for him to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise, and the expectations was perfect. I'm buzzing to have been a part of it.' Alas, there's no footage of the magical moment, as the audience was instructed not to film the event, having had their phones placed in sealed pouches. Got a story? My date was a terrible kisser - but that wasn't the worst part

Jay* held my hand as he walked me back to my car, telling me he didn't want the night to end. We had talked and laughed throughout dinner before going to a show. We spoke about everything, from my disability – I am an ambulatory wheelchair user with chronic pain, as well as autistic and have ADHD – my job, love of musical theatre, and his passion for travel. He even told me more about his family and how he had recently been to visit them for a holiday. When we got back into my car after my dream date, we continued talking, while listening to music. Eventually he leaned over and kissed me. I'd been waiting for this all night. And that's where things started to go wrong. The kiss was bad. Oh god, it was terrible. It was sloppy, all teeth, as if he'd never kissed anyone before and had no idea what he was doing. He'd clearly never even practiced on the back of his hand. He kissed me a few more times and I found myself pulling away because it was so unappealing. I was shocked and extremely disappointed; kissing is important to me – I love a snogging session. So, How Did It Go? is a weekly series that will make you cringe with second-hand embarrassment or ooze with jealousy as people share their worst and best date stories. Want to spill the beans about your own awkward encounter or love story? Contact I went home feeling unsure. Jay was the best date I'd had in a long time but if he couldn't deliver on the kissing front, I wasn't sure I was willing to compromise. This uncertainty prompted me to try to find out more about him. Jay had sent me a screenshot of our dinner table reservation, which had given me his full name, so I typed it into the search engine. His Facebook account popped straight up. And right there, at the top of his feed, was a wedding picture of him and his new bride – from three weeks earlier. I felt a punch in my stomach, and then I started to laugh. I had been lied to and didn't even consider there to be another explanation. He was married. And I instantly decided that I was never seeing him again. I clicked on the picture. There were over 30 comments congratulating Jay and his wife, as well as his replies, thanking them. The most galling part is that the pictures were taken in the same location he had told me he had been to visit his family on 'holiday'. But that was clearly where he had done his wedding ceremony. By this time, it was after midnight and I knew Jay would be asleep. So I decided to take a screenshot of the wedding photo with the comments and send it to him on WhatsApp. 'Would you like to explain this?' I wrote. No immediate response. Lying in bed that night, I couldn't help but look back on the date. There wasn't actually anything he said or did to raise any red flags that he could be married, so I'm glad I was proactive and looked him up. A part of me was relieved because this meant that I didn't have to kiss him again. In fact, I even felt sorry for his wife. The next morning, I still didn't have a reply from Jay so I checked his profile and discovered that he had blocked me on everything. To this day, I have never seen or heard from him. H The whole experience made me even more cautious about dating than I already was; it made me question others' intentions, whether they are already in a relationship, who to trust, and so much more. More Trending Yet I knew I couldn't judge all men by that one guy. That hasn't stopped me from asking dates I've been on if they're married. I try to laugh it off, but it is always in the back of my head that I am being lied to. I am extremely paranoid. I now know to trust my gut when it comes to bad kissing – and definitely not settle for it. *Name has been changed Do you have a story you'd like to share?
