My date was a terrible kisser - but that wasn't the worst part

Metro07-06-2025
Jay* held my hand as he walked me back to my car, telling me he didn't want the night to end.
We had talked and laughed throughout dinner before going to a show.
We spoke about everything, from my disability – I am an ambulatory wheelchair user with chronic pain, as well as autistic and have ADHD – my job, love of musical theatre, and his passion for travel. He even told me more about his family and how he had recently been to visit them for a holiday.
When we got back into my car after my dream date, we continued talking, while listening to music. Eventually he leaned over and kissed me. I'd been waiting for this all night.
And that's where things started to go wrong.
The kiss was bad. Oh god, it was terrible.
It was sloppy, all teeth, as if he'd never kissed anyone before and had no idea what he was doing. He'd clearly never even practiced on the back of his hand.
He kissed me a few more times and I found myself pulling away because it was so unappealing. I was shocked and extremely disappointed; kissing is important to me – I love a snogging session.

I went home feeling unsure. Jay was the best date I'd had in a long time but if he couldn't deliver on the kissing front, I wasn't sure I was willing to compromise.
This uncertainty prompted me to try to find out more about him. Jay had sent me a screenshot of our dinner table reservation, which had given me his full name, so I typed it into the search engine.
His Facebook account popped straight up. And right there, at the top of his feed, was a wedding picture of him and his new bride – from three weeks earlier.
I felt a punch in my stomach, and then I started to laugh. I had been lied to and didn't even consider there to be another explanation.
He was married. And I instantly decided that I was never seeing him again.
I clicked on the picture. There were over 30 comments congratulating Jay and his wife, as well as his replies, thanking them.
The most galling part is that the pictures were taken in the same location he had told me he had been to visit his family on 'holiday'. But that was clearly where he had done his wedding ceremony.
By this time, it was after midnight and I knew Jay would be asleep. So I decided to take a screenshot of the wedding photo with the comments and send it to him on WhatsApp.
'Would you like to explain this?' I wrote. No immediate response.
Lying in bed that night, I couldn't help but look back on the date. There wasn't actually anything he said or did to raise any red flags that he could be married, so I'm glad I was proactive and looked him up.
A part of me was relieved because this meant that I didn't have to kiss him again. In fact, I even felt sorry for his wife.
The next morning, I still didn't have a reply from Jay so I checked his profile and discovered that he had blocked me on everything.
To this day, I have never seen or heard from him. H
The whole experience made me even more cautious about dating than I already was; it made me question others' intentions, whether they are already in a relationship, who to trust, and so much more. More Trending
Yet I knew I couldn't judge all men by that one guy. That hasn't stopped me from asking dates I've been on if they're married.
I try to laugh it off, but it is always in the back of my head that I am being lied to. I am extremely paranoid.
I now know to trust my gut when it comes to bad kissing – and definitely not settle for it.

Dozens of hot air balloons take to the skies above Bristol

Dozens of hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes have filled the skies above Bristol for the city's annual fiesta. Around 90 balloons took part in a mass ascent at Ashton Court Estate, where the popular event takes place, on Friday morning. Hundreds of fans were up early to watch the opening ceremony of the free-to-attend Bristol International Balloon Fiesta just after 6am, with balloon burners lighting up to mark the start of the event. One balloon then took to the sky with a union flag, followed by dozens of other brightly coloured balloons which flew over Bristol towards Bath, Somerset. Commercial balloon pilot Tom Hilditch, 35, from Brighton, was among the pilots to fly in the mass ascent and praised the 'idyllic conditions'. He said: 'It was great to fly with all the other balloons. 'There were idyllic weather conditions, with nice slow winds. 'The winds were a little too variable when trying to find a landing spot but otherwise it was a perfect morning.' Mr Hilditch, who has had his pilot's licence for 13 years, is planning to cycle around England towing a hopper balloon – which does not have a basket – to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust next year. This year's fiesta, running from Friday to Sunday, will celebrate Bristol and its heritage links to the world of hot air ballooning. The activity has been part of Bristol's culture for many years, with the first recorded flight in the city dating back to the 18th century. During the fiesta, balloons are scheduled to take off early morning and evening – though this is weather permitting. Special shape balloons will be present at the event, including the Up balloon, Thomas the Tank Engine, Sonic the Hedgehog, Astro the Alien, Rupert the Bear and Oggy the Friendly Dragon – which comes from America. There is also a Wallace & Gromit Moon Rocket balloon, Buster and Bella the Bulldogs, Slither the Snake, Snow White, an Ordnance Survey Map and BBC Globe. In the evenings, night-glows – where dozens of tethered balloons light up in sync to a special musical soundtrack – will take place.

The Dublin born talent was well-respected for his work both in Ireland and in the UK. And announcing his passing, the Irish Cultural Centre in London said Grimes was "one of Ireland's greatest actors." In a tribute, they said he was "so warm hearted, full of Dublin wit and charm in abundance and he had a beautiful sparkle in his eyes." They continued: "We know that Ireland has lost one of it's truly great actors, the vintage of which is so rare and may never ever be matched again. "We are so sad to have to say goodbye to Frank, but we are also so blessed to have known him, to have worked with him and seen him perform. "We send our sincere condolences to his wife Ginnette, his daughter Tilly, his son Andrew, his 7 grandchildren and to all his extended family. "We also send our condolences to all of Frank's friends and loved ones - May Frank sleep easy now and Rest In Peace." The Tony award nominated actor's career spanned several decades and varied from "unforgettable" on stage performances to his stint on soap Coronation Street. In 2008, Grimes made his first appearance as Barry Connor in the soap. Coronation Street's Catherine Tyldesley breaks silence alongside two huge newcomer signings as she begins filming He went on to appear in more than 50 episodes of the popular drama before leaving the show in 2015. The actor also played roles in Irish telly hit Mrs Brown's Boys as well as shows and films such as A Bridge Too Far, Tulips of Harlem, The Outsider and Blind Justice. Recalling some of his most "thrilling" work on stage, the ICC said: "Frank was undoubtedly one of Ireland's greatest actors, he was a dearly loved friend of the ICC's and over the past three decades, he trod the ICC's stage on so many occasions. "Anyone who saw Frank perform his riveting self-penned production 'the he and the she of it…'A Portrait of James Joyce', will know what a thrilling, powerful, unforgettable performance it was! "Frank performed this superb tribute to his hero James Joyce, on whom he was an expert, three times at the ICC, and each time, every night he received standing ovations! "Frank was a spell-binding actor who had the most beautiful mesmerising voice and he often appeared on the radio show 'Bright Side Of The Road'..." 'VERSATILE ACTOR' Grimes was born in Dublin in 1947 and trained at the Abbey Theatre in the city. In a tribute, sharing snaps of Grimes on stage during a production of Borstal Boy, the theatre said: "A versatile actor, Frank performed in various productions on both the Abbey and Peaock stages from 1965 to 1972, including plays by Sean O'Casey, Lady Gregory, Oliver Goldsmith, Thomas Kilroy, J.M. Synge, Willliam Shakespeare, Bernard Shaw and Tom MacIntyre. "He's pictured here, on stage, as a young Brendan Behan in the 1967 world premiere of Borstal Boy by Brendan Behan, adapted by Frank McMahon; and alongside Niall Tóibín in the rehearsal room. Transferring to Broadway, the production of Borstal Boy at the Lyceum Theatre in New York won the Tony Award for Best play with a Best Actor in a Play nomination for Grimes."
