Bucs Announce Major Contract News For Todd Bowles and GM Jason Licht
Bucs Announce Major Contract News For Todd Bowles and GM Jason Licht originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jason Licht and Todd Bowles have worked together for a number of years since joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The head coach-general manager dynamic has only existed for the last three. Advertisement Bowles and Licht have carried on the success that produced a Super Bowl and multiple playoff appearances in the years that preceded the former taking over the head coaching job. Count three more playoff appearances and three more NFC South titles. The Bucs have built a stable playoff team that has continued to improve each season. Recognizing their achievement and importance to the franchise, Tampa Bay has locked up both for the foreseeable future. The team announced Thursday multiyear extensions for Bowles and Licht. "Jason and Todd's leadership has been critical to our organization's success. The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future," Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships." Advertisement The head coach's deal stands for three more years as he prepares to enter his fourth year at the helm in Tampa Bay. Bowles comes off a 10-7 season that saw the Bucs win six of their last seven games to reclaim the crown in the South. "I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals," Bowles said. "My family loves Tampa and we're looking forward to delivering more great moments for our fans in the coming seasons." Licht remains one of the longest tenured executives in the NFL, preparing for his 12th season with the Bucs. He was instrumental in the blockbuster Tom Brady signing in 2020 that led to the franchise's second Super Bowl victory the following season. Advertisement Since then, Licht has engineered the transition from the Brady years to now aiding the Baker Mayfield resurgence with the Bucs, maintaining key franchise pieces in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin Jr, Tristan Wirfs and others along the way. While Licht's future was more secure, there were some silent whispers about what a setback year could mean for Bowles' future as the head coach. Instead, the Bucs make a clear commitment to their leadership in two key areas for the coming years, investing in a continuation of the progress shown each of the last three seasons. Bill Belichick Rumor Update as NFL Contender Announces Major Move
Bill Belichick Rumor Update as NFL Contender Announces Major Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently suggested that Bill Belichick may have eyes on not just a return to the NFL, but also on being the head coach of the 2026 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Advertisement His "report'' - such as it was - centered on his claim wrote that Tar Heels general manager Mike Lombardi (Belichick's right-hand man) was going around suggesting that present Bucs coach Todd Bowles might be interested in retiring after this season. Florio was curious what would motivate Lombardi to spread such a rumor. ... while spreading the rumor himself. "So why would Lombardi be trying to speak a vacancy into existence? Maybe because that's one of the jobs Belichick would want," Florio wrote. "Even with all of the craziness that has happened of late, the Bucs can't be ruled out as a potential destination for Belichick. ... "So I feel like Belichick has been eyeballing the Bucs.'' Advertisement Oh. Florio - who also this offseason claimed hilariously, "I don't like to traffic in (rumors)'' - didn't have his facts straight then. And today? It's all even more embarrassing, as not only is Bowles, 61, not retiring ... He just signed a contract extension on Thursday. The Buccaneers have a coach that has won three straight division championships. Belichick already has a job with the North Carolina Tar Heels. ... even though Florio seems to write almost daily about how he "feels'' Belichick (and his right-hand woman Jordon Hudson) might leave UNC. "Feelings'' are nice. Facts are what matter. The Buccaneers announced contract extensions Thursday morning for both general manager Jason Licht and head coach Bowles. This comes on the heels of another successful year for the franchise. Advertisement Over the course of the last year the Bucs have navigated multiple major coaching staff changes, maintained key veterans through free agency, drafted immediate contributors across the roster and won the NFC South for a fourth straight season. Much of that credit belongs to both Bowles and Licht. ... And it is the height of disrespect to Bowles that PFT seems to fail to recognize that. Bowles has kept the Bucs atop their division since taking over in 2022 and increased the team's win total by one each season. He is now being rewarded for that ... and probably shouldn't hold his breath waiting for an apology from Mike Florio. LeBron James May Have Had Secret Operation After 2015 NBA Finals
LeBron James May Have Had Secret Operation After 2015 NBA Finals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors in the 2015 NBA Finals in six games despite LeBron James averaging 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, 8.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks in the series. Advertisement Kyrie Irving fractured his left kneecap in Game 1 and missed the rest of the series. Meanwhile, Kevin Love missed the entire Cavaliers-Warriors series after dislocating his left shoulder in the first round of the 2015 playoffs against the Boston Celtics. James did everything he could to lead Cleveland past Golden State, but the leading scorer in NBA history came up short. A future Hall of Famer, James played through a well-documented back injury during the 2014-15 season. While it was reported that James didn't have surgery, his former Cleveland teammate, Iman Shumpert, recently said he "believes" James had "some back operation" after the 2015 NBA Finals. Advertisement 'I can't remember what LeBron's issue was, but I believe he went and got some back operation after that before the next season,' Shumpert said on the Hoop Collective on Monday. James played in 76 games in 2015-16, averaging 25.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.6 blocks. The Cavaliers faced the Warriors again in the 2016 NBA Finals. Behind James and Irving, Cleveland erased a 3-1 series deficit to win the championship in seven exhilarating games. James won the 2016 Finals MVP Award. He finished the seven-game series with stellar averages of 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 2.3 blocks.
