India sends diplomat for talks to Damascus

India has made a formal outreach to Syria's provisional government led by former Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, with a middle-ranking diplomat visiting Damascus for meetings with Syrian ministers. India sends diplomat for talks to Damascus This was the first official visit to Damascus from the Indian side since al-Sharaa, whose group was once affiliated to al-Qaeda, assumed power after ousting the regime of Bashar al-Assad following a lightning offensive last December. There was no official word from the Indian side on the visit by Suresh Kumar, director of the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) division of the external affairs ministry. Kumar's meetings with Syria's foreign and education ministers in Damascus on Monday were reported by state-run SANA news agency. 'A beginning had to be made and India had to register its presence. You have to open the door at some point,' a person familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. Syria's foreign minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and the Indian delegation led by Kumar discussed 'issues of mutual concern and ways of enhancing relations between the two countries in the interests of both peoples', SANA reported. The meeting between Kumar and Syrian health minister Musab Al-Ali focused on enhancing health cooperation, particularly in the fields of pharmaceutical industries and medical training, according to another report by SANA. The two sides also discussed a mechanism for implementing a scholarship for Syrian students, and allocating a specialised engineering cooperation programme for government employees. Al-Ali stressed Syria's aspiration to establish a strong partnership with India in pharmaceutical industries and health technologies in order to support the national health sector and provide medicines. Kumar said India will continue funding specialised training courses for Syrian personnel, coordinate the training of Syrian doctors in Indian centres, and enhance cooperation in nursing, pharmaceutical industries and pharmaceutical exports, the report said. India has had strong political ties with Syria and both countries were key members of the Non-Aligned Movement. India's traditional support for Arab causes such as the issue of Palestine was appreciated by Syria. India also backed Syria's right to the Golan Heights, currently occupied by Israel, and its full return to the country. Under the Assad family, the Syrian government usually backed India at multilateral forums, including on the issue of Kashmir. In response to a request from Damascus for emergency humanitarian aid in 2021, the Indian government gifted 2,000 tonnes of rice to Syria. During the Covid-19 pandemic, India sent a 10 tonnes of medicines to Syria. This was the largest medical assistance from any country to Syria during the pandemic. India has been monitoring the situation in Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. At the time, India evacuated 77 Indian nationals from Syria. 'We hope that the new constitution, due to be drafted, takes into account the interests of all the sections of the Syrian society,' the external affairs ministry said in a statement around the time of the change of government. In January, al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda commander who went by the name Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, became president of the provisional government. People familiar with the matter said the outreach to Damascus was influenced by Syria's strategic location in West Asia – the country shares borders with five key regional actors, Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon – and the long-standing ties between the two sides. The outreach also follows the US decision to end sanctions on Syria after a meeting between al-Sharaa and President Donald Trump in May.

These Workers Get ‘30-Min Masturbation Break' To Relieve ‘Agitation'. Company They Work For Is...

Last Updated: A Swedish company has introduced a unique 30-minute daily break for employees to relieve stress through masturbation. A Swedish company named Erika Lust Films has introduced an unusual workplace rule to help employees manage stress. Staff members are given a 30-minute daily break specifically for masturbation. This policy aims to improve mental health and reduce tension at work. The company, founded by Erika Lust, creates indie adult films and has over 40 employees. Erika came up with the idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she and her team were feeling stressed, distracted, and anxious. She first introduced the break as a trial, which turned out to be successful. So, in May 2022, it became a permanent part of the company policy. Here's What The Founder Says In a blog post, Erika explained her reason behind the policy: 'In 2021, a year into the pandemic, I started noticing my team and myself struggling. Years of pandemic life had started to take their toll on us. We were less focused, more agitated, and overall more anxious." To support the initiative, Erika also introduced a special Masturbation Month and gave her team an extra 30-minute break each day for personal time, as per LADbible. They even created a private space in the office, called the 'masturbation station", just for this purpose. 'Masturbation has been shown to not only make you happier, more relaxed, and more focused, but it is also a proven creativity booster and it increases your focus and drive to get things done," she added in her blog post. A Permanent Rule According to The Free Press Journal, Erika shared that what began as a trial during Masturbation Month became a long-term policy. 'I launched the initiative to coincide with Masturbation Month, but we decided to make 'masturbation break' a permanent company policy that we enforce until this day," her blog post reads as per the Free Press Journal. Meanwhile, LADbible states that the company also teamed up with German sex toy brand Fun Factory in 2022 to provide staff with a free sex toy of their choice. Interestingly, a survey done the same year by Chemist4U showed that 14 per cent of people admitted to masturbating during work hours. It is unclear how many of Erika Lust's employees use the dedicated office room. Punjab government assures implementation of security by August 19

Chandigarh: Facing mounting pressure from the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA), the state govt has pledged to fulfil a raft of demands from the medical fraternity — including deploying security at all public health facilities and implementing key service benefits — by August 19. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The assurances came after a high-level meeting on Monday between PCMSA representatives and principal secretary for health Kumar Rahul. The agreement marks a significant breakthrough in negotiations that followed weeks of protests and warnings from govt doctors. PCMSA president Dr Akhil Sarin confirmed that the govt had "agreed unequivocally" to several core demands, including the enforcement of security arrangements in hospitals and rollout of the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme. The state also committed to rationalising postgraduate (PG) allowances for specialists who completed their degrees before 2016 — including those prior to 2001 — and issuing revised SOPs for VVIP medical duties. Other commitments include rectifying pay discrepancies for the 2020 Covid-19 batch, streamlining MACP notifications and allowance rationalisations with the finance department, and clarifying accountability for data preparation among subordinate staff. The govt also agreed to revise fund allocation instructions for senior medical officers (SMOs) to purchase non-essential (non-EDL) drugs, ensure pay protection for regular medical officers (RMOs) merged into the PCMS cadre, and consider digital processing of NOCs, probation clearances, and MACPs via the i-HRMS portal. Additional administrative upgrades promised include the procurement and outsourcing of vehicles for civil surgeons and programme officers, a payment system for legal drafting, and fair allocation of interns, foreign medical graduates (FMGs), and DRPs across institutes. Five PCMSA members will be on a govt committee to oversee PCMS cadre's restructuring — a long-standing demand of the association. The PCMSA will hold a general body meeting on Aug 17 to evaluate progress on these assurances. Dr Sarin cautioned the govt against reneging on its commitments.
