"The severe heat is expected to persist till Thursday. A western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from the night of June 13, which may bring light rain and thunderstorms in Delhi," said Dr Naresh Kumar, senior IMD scientist.
IMD's red alert indicates extreme heat conditions and urges people to follow all precautionary measures and advises extreme care for vulnerable people.
Excessive heat and health
Heat can affect your health in various ways, particularly during extreme temperatures or prolonged exposure to high heat.
The body regulates its temperature primarily through sweating and increased blood flow to the skin. However, when the heat is excessive, these mechanisms can become overwhelmed, leading to heat-related illnesses. Excessive heat can contribute to several issues such as heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke, cramps and rashes.

1. Focus on hydration
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. This helps your body regulate temperature and remain hydrated. Other than water, buttermilk, lemon water, sattu sharbat, coconut water and bael sharbat are some hydrating yet nourishing options you must try.
2. Dress appropriately
Wear lightweight, breathable, and loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton. This allows sweat to evaporate more easily, supports better airflow and keeps you cooler.
3. Eat cooling foods
Several foods can naturally cool down your body from the inside out like mint, yogurt, gond katira, sabja seeds and fennel seeds. Add these coolants to your diet along with water-rich foods like cucumber and watermelon to boost overall hydration.
Additionally, opt for lighter meals such as salads and fruits that are high in water content. Heavy meals can raise your body temperature as digestion requires energy.
4. Limit physical activity
Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours to prevent excessive sweating leading to dehydration and exhaustion. Low-intensity exercises in the mornings or evenings when temperatures are cooler are appropriate for summer.
5. Take baths and shower
A cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature instantly. You can also use a wet cloth on your neck and wrists for a quick cooling effect.
6. Limit dehydrating foods and drinks
Caffeine, alcohol, sugary treats and foods high in salt can dehydrate you and trigger several health issues.

Rain activity to intensify in Delhi over weekend; IMD issues yellow alert
The Capital is likely to see an increase in rain activity over the weekend, with the monsoon trough set to shift closer to the National Capital Region (NCR). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Saturday, with light to moderate showers, accompanied by isolated intense spells expected in the region, officials said. The IMD said an increase in intensity is expected from Friday night into Saturday and Sunday, as the monsoon trough – centred around central India, moves northwards again. 'We expect rain to continue in Delhi for the next six days. Intensity will increase from Saturday and a good spell is likely on Sunday too,' said an IMD official. Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet said a low pressure area is developing over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, which will pull the monsoon trough closer to Delhi again. 'From Friday night, we will see rain intensity gradually increase as the monsoon trough will be just south of Delhi. During this period, one to two intense spells are also expected,' Palawat said. Delhi has only been recording scattered drizzle to light rain in the past few days. Safdarjung, Delhi's base station, logged 0.4mm in the 24 hours till 8:30 am. It was 0.1mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. Between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, Palam and Lodhi road logged 'trace' rainfall, Ayanagar 7.2mm and Najafgarh 2mm, data showed. So far, Delhi has logged 259.2mm in monthly rainfall, with this figure likely to touch close to or cross 300mm in the coming days. Normally, Delhi sees 233.1mm in August, meaning it is already in the 'excess' category. Delhi's maximum stood at 34.8°C on Thursday, a degree above normal. The minimum stood at 25.9°C, a degree below normal. On Friday, the maximum is likely to be between 34-36°C, while the minimum is expected to hover between 23-25°C, it said. Delhi's air quality meanwhile remained in the 'satisfactory' category on Thursday. The average air quality index (AQI) stood at 79 (satisfactory) at 4pm on Thursday, the same reading at 4 pm on Wednesday.

IITB's hyperlocal forecast aids BMC during flooding
Mumbai: Over the past few days of heavy rainfall in the city, the civic administration has been relying on multiple sources of weather forecasts, not solely on the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials said in addition to IMD bulletins, the BMC has tapped into the rainfall forecasting and flood monitoring system developed by students, faculty, and staff from the Centre for Climate Studies (CCS) at IIT Bombay . They disseminate near-real-time rainfall and waterlogging information through their dedicated portal and the Mumbai flood app. Additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar said, "Even while a red alert was already issued by IMD for Aug 19 earlier this week, our teams received hyperlocal forecast from the team. Intermittent showers bring relief from heat
Kanpur: The city witnessed intermittent showers from morning until afternoon on Thursday, providing relief to residents from the sultry weather as temperatures dipped to 29.3 degrees Celsius. The city may witness light rain in isolated areas, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms over the next five days and the sky will remain covered with light clouds, said Dr S Sunil Pandey, a weather scientist at CSA University and the Indian Meterological department (IMD). On Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded was 4.4 degrees below normal, whereas the minimum temperature was recorded 1.5 degrees above normal. The maximum relative humidity reached 89%. South eastern winds, sailing at a speed of 10.6 kilometres per hour, helped alleviate the heat and contributed to the formation of clouds for the showers. The city received 0.4 mm of rainfall on Thursday causing waterlogging at some areas. Roads turned slippery due to silt in many areas causing problem for commuters.
