Epic Universe opens to thrill crowds, with hopes of boosting economy in Central Florida

Yahoo23-05-2025

The Brief
Epic Universe opened in Orlando after six years in development, debuting with short wait times and high fanfare.
The park is expected to drive major economic growth across Central Florida's $92.5 billion tourism industry.
With its scale and ambition, Epic Universe reinforces Orlando's status as the theme park capital of the world.
ORLANDO, Fla. - After six years in development, Universal's long-anticipated Epic Universe theme park officially opened its gates Thursday, marking the first major new park to launch in Orlando in more than two decades.
What we know
Universal Orlando officially opened its new Epic Universe theme park on Thursday, marking the first major theme park addition to the region in more than 25 years.
The park includes five immersive lands themed around popular franchises such as Super Nintendo and Harry Potter. Despite high anticipation, wait times for most rides remained under 25 minutes, and crowds were surprisingly manageable — suggesting a controlled, soft-launch strategy by Universal.
The backstory
Universal's newly opened Epic Universe is doing more than attracting crowds — it's transforming Orlando's landscape and supercharging the local economy, particularly in the once-overlooked International Drive corridor.
Epic Universe has been in development for six years, representing one of Universal's most ambitious projects. The park's announcement stirred global interest, with pre-sale tickets selling out as early as October.
The last major park debut in Orlando was in the 1990s, making Thursday's opening not just an event, but a generational milestone for Florida's tourism industry.
Dig deeper
Located on 160 acres in Orange County, Epic Universe is now a vibrant draw for tourists and businesses alike, sitting on what was once vacant and contaminated land formerly owned by defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The transformation has turned what some called "wasteland" into a global attraction.
Before Epic Universe broke ground, the area served a far different purpose. Documents show Lockheed Martin conducted missile and fire control testing on the property from 1958 to 1996, leaving behind contaminants like benzene, cadmium and vinyl chloride.
After Universal acquired the site in 1998, cleanup efforts began. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency commended both Lockheed and Universal for collaborating on the remediation, which cleared the way for development.
Timeline
The launch of Epic Universe isn't just a milestone for Universal — it's a shot in the arm for Central Florida's $92.5 billion tourism sector.
Local business leaders are already reporting increased foot traffic and renewed interest in surrounding areas. Analysts expect the park to drive substantial growth in jobs, tourism revenue, and regional development. It also raises the bar for theme park competition, potentially influencing the future direction of entertainment attractions nationwide. Below is a timeline of significant dates leading up to Epic Universe's grand opening:
1998: Universal acquires the site from Lockheed Martin, cleanup efforts begin.
2004: EPA clears path for redevelopment of the land.
2019: Universal announces plans for Epic Universe.
2020–2022: Development faces delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Late 2024: Tickets go on sale, and final preparations begin.
May 2025: Epic Universe officially opens to the public.
What we don't know
Universal has not disclosed exact attendance numbers or confirmed whether opening day capacity was intentionally limited. There's also uncertainty around how long the lower wait times and controlled entry will last.
What they're saying
The park's opening has created a wave of prosperity for surrounding businesses, hotels, and infrastructure projects. The Hilton Grand Vacations Hotel, overlooking Epic Universe, has seen an influx of international guests.
Experts say the entire corridor is booming, with new developments including the expansion of the Orange County Convention Center and the planned Sunshine Corridor rail project.
"When the economists do the projections for 2025, the total economic impact is going to be somewhere north of that $92.5 billion," said Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

Tom Felton Returns as Draco Malfoy in Broadway's HARRY POTTER IN THE CURSED CHILD — GeekTyrant

Here's a cool piece of news for Harry Potter fans! Tom Felton is heading back to the Wizarding World! The actor is best known for playing Draco Malfoy in all eight Harry Potter films, and will officially reprise his role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway starting November 11, 2025. He'll be part of the production for 19 weeks, through March 22, 2026. Not only is this Felton's Broadway debut, but it also marks the first time an original cast member from the films has stepped into the Cursed Child stage story. Felton shared: 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. 'It's surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.' Set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Cursed Child focuses on the next generation, specifically the children of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and yes, Draco, as they begin their own journeys at Hogwarts. Felton will now embody a version of Draco that fans never saw in the films. One that is older, more reflective, and navigating the uneasy weight of legacy. The show's producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, called the moment 'powerful on many levels.' 'As fans of the wizarding world ourselves, we feel incredibly fortunate to welcome Tom into our Cursed Child family on Broadway and to offer 'Harry Potter' fans around the globe the once-in-a-lifetime excitement of seeing him reprise this iconic role, this time on-stage in New York City. 'This moment is powerful on many levels—Tom will be making his Broadway debut and is marking a full-circle moment for not just himself, but for Draco too. He gets to inhabit Draco once more, but this time as an adult facing the relatable challenges of parenthood and the complicated meaning of legacy.' Since opening at the Lyric Theatre in 2018, the Broadway production of The Cursed Child has evolved from a two-part epic to a single, streamlined 3.5-hour experience. The show remains one of Broadway's most technically dazzling and narratively rich productions, blending old lore with new emotional stakes. For fans of the franchise, seeing Felton return to the role, especially in such a personal, time-jumping context, offers a rare kind of magic.

Tom Felton To Play Draco Malfoy In ‘Cursed Child' On Broadway—How To Buy Tickets

While the role of Draco Malfoy has yet to be cast in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series, original actor Tom Felton isn't giving up his wand just yet. After starring in all eight movies of the original blockbuster film series from 2001 to 2011, Felton is now making his Broadway debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This casting marks the first time anyone from the original films has appeared in the stage production. Felton will play the adult version of Draco at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, beginning Nov. 11 for a 19-week run through March 22, 2026. 'Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life," he said in a statement. "Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I'll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.' The news was first announced on Today on Thursday, June 5, where the actor revealed that his casting is 'very much a pinch-me' situation. 'I keep thinking I'm dreaming. I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now getting a chance to step back into his shoes — as a father this time, in a new story — I get to meet Draco as an adult, which is very exciting.' Over on Instagram, Felton and the official Harry Potter and the Cursed Child accounts shared a first look at Felton in his black robes and sleek blonde hairstyle, resembling his on-screen father, Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs). Felton admitted he "cried" when he tried on the character's platinum wig again after so long, considering how deeply the franchise shaped his childhood. "I've been very excited to share this news, and I had to keep it under wraps for quite a while," the 37-year-old added. Want to buy tickets to see Felton as Draco in the historic role? Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne. The plot takes place 19 years after the events of J.K. Rowling's novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Harry is now an adult, married to Ginny Weasley, and serves as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. He has three children, including Albus, who is beginning his journey at Hogwarts. After being sorted into Slytherin, Albus struggles with the weight of his family legacy. The play debuted in London's West End in the summer of 2016. Chris Columbus, the director behind the first two Harry Potter films, told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that he would be open to directing an adaptation of the stage sequel featuring the original main cast – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – as their adult counterparts. "A version of Cursed Child with Dan, Rupert and Emma at the right age, it's cinematic bliss. If you're a film nerd or cinephile, it's kind of like what J.J. Abrams did with Star Wars... There's no question if you're a Star Wars fan, you were moved just seeing them on screen, seeing Harrison Ford as Han Solo again — and Chewy," he said. "I think that would be the same situation for Harry Potter fans. To able to actually see these adult actors now back in these roles? Oh, yeah. It would be amazingly fun to make that film — or two films," Columbus added.

Fortnite's Tim Sweeney Says 10 People Can Write ‘Breath Of Wild' With AI Soon

Breath of the Wild Nintendo Many gamers recently celebrated alongside Tim Sweeney as he and Epic claimed victory over Apple in a series of significant rulings meant to reduce the tech giant's ability to universally scoop up 30% of revenue from releases on its platform. But now? Sweeney is running in a new direction, full-steam toward the integration of AI into video games at a creative level, running afoul of many fans and developers alike. Fortnite has recently run an experiment with a (licensed) AI Darth Vader that responds in real-time to player voice chat. That has led to thousands of funny clips and huge player engagement, enough to be considered a big success. So Epic is barreling forward with more AI characters and other elements to come. Darth Vader Loserfruit Sweeney is a big driver of this, and his views on AI in game development are some of the most extreme in the industry in terms of embracing the technology, as he recently demonstrated when speaking to IGN at Epic's State of Unreal 2025 event. He talked about how AI was just another significant advance in technology, the type that gaming had embraced for years from 3D gaming to hardware and engines supporting hundreds of players for games like Fortnite. He says AI can produce branching dialogue that writers could never envision, but his most controversial comment would be the following: The idea that an entire team of Nintendo developers working for years to make GOTY winner Breath of the Wild could be replaced by a tiny team using AI sounds ridiculous on its face. Sweeney seems to be focused mainly on writing, but he doesn't expand on the implications of how that affects story. As in, you talk a character into switching sides in a conflict, opening up a new set of missions that were never meant to exist. How does that work? Perhaps the idea is that AI will just generate that too. Fallout 76 Bethesda Is his position actually unpopular? There seem to be four sides in this conversation: 1) Executives who see AI as the next big thing and will embrace and push it however they can, hopefully to lower costs, if nothing else. 2) Players who do not care about any of this and just want to make funny jokes with AI Darth Vader 3) Players who react to AI like touching a stove and want nothing to do with generative AI in their games, whether it's in writing, art, level-building, any of it. 4) The developers who do not want to lose their jobs as writers, artists and level-builders to AI, which they believe will make an inferior product and one based on their own stolen work. What will happen from here? This doesn't feel like the metaverse or the blockchain or VR pushes from before. AI is here and legitimately changing enormous industries and evolving at such a clip that it's impossible to say what happens from here. And you can say a lot about Sweeney, but he's often right about where things are headed. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
