South Korean President Lee Likely to Visit Japan in Late August
If realized, it would be Lee's first visit to Japan since taking office in June.
He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to affirm their policy of maintaining the trend of improving bilateral relations. They are also expected to agree to begin reciprocal visits.
The JoongAng Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper, reported in its online edition Friday that Lee is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Aug. 25.
Lee's visit to Japan is being arranged just before or just after his trip to the United States.
In June, Ishiba and Lee held their first in-person talks on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Canada, agreeing to build future-oriented relations and continue the shuttle diplomacy.
At the envisaged summit, the two leaders are expected to exchange views on North Korea's deepening military cooperation with Russia, China's increasingly assertive behavior in the East and South China seas and ways to deal with the Trump administration.

The LDP plans to release a summary report on the results of last month's House of Councillors election at the end of this month. "I will consider (my responsibility) appropriately based on various opinions," Ishiba told a news conference in the city of Nagasaki, southwestern Japan. On Friday, the LDP held a general meeting of the party's lawmakers from both chambers of the Diet, Japan's parliament. At the meeting, a number of LDP members called for Ishiba to step down. The participants agreed that the party's presidential election administration commission will ask LDP Diet members as well as representatives from all 47 prefectural party branches whether to hold an emergency party leadership election. Japan Should Promote Nuke Abolition under NPT: Ishiba
Nagasaki, Aug. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Saturday reiterated his view that his country should strive for a world without nuclear weapons within the framework of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, signed by both nuclear powers and nonnuclear states. "Unless we discuss with nuclear powers, we can't eliminate or reduce nuclear weapons," Ishiba told a news conference in Nagasaki after attending a memorial ceremony on the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of the southwestern Japan city. Ishiba once considered sending a Japanese representative as an observer to a meeting of signatories to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which the United States and other nuclear powers have not joined. But the Japanese government dropped the plan later. At the press conference, Ishiba said, "We have two responsibilities: to the people and the world," referring to national security and nuclear disarmament. He expressed his commitment to pursue both objectives. When asked whether to certify as hibakusha atomic bomb survivors individuals who were affected by the atomic bombing outside the government-designated areas for hibakusha support, Ishiba explained that the government has been providing such individuals with medical expense subsidies equivalent to those for certified hibakusha since December last year. Tariffs on Japanese Products to Be Revised: U.S. Official
News from Japan Aug 9, 2025 17:37 (JST) Washington, Aug. 8 (Jiji Press)--The United States will revise the way it applies the 15 pct reciprocal tariffs on Japanese products, a White House official told Jiji Press on Friday. The official said that the tariffs on imports from Japan will be 15 pct including existing tax rates, as is the case for products from the European Union. The remarks came after the 15 pct reciprocal tariffs on Japanese imports went into effect on Thursday. Japanese economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa, who is in charge of tariff negotiations with the United States, said he confirmed with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington on Thursday that the U.S. side would revise the executive order on reciprocal tariffs to reflect the Japan-U.S. agreement reached in late July. The White House official also indicated that such a revision will be made. According to the Japanese government, the U.S. side agreed not to impose a reciprocal tariff on Japanese items that are already subject to tariffs of 15 pct or higher, while setting the reciprocal tariff rate at 15 pct for products with an existing levy of less than 15 pct.
