Apart from Nivin and Lawrence, another big star will also be playing an important role in the film, he reveals.
Nivin Pauly
is making his entry into the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) by playing the main antagonist, Walter, in
Raghava Lawrence
's Benz. This will be the actor's fourth film in Tamil after Neram , Richie , and Ram's yet-to-be-released Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai . The film's director,
Bakkiyaraj Kannan
, who previously made Remo and Sulthan , talks to us about what made him pick Nivin for the role, how his film is connected to the LCU, and more. Excerpts:
'FANS CAN EXPECT A RUTHLESS NIVIN PAULY'
'We wanted to cast an actor who would give off a new vibe and doesn't fall under the regular villain template.
Fans can expect a ruthless Nivin Pauly. The character will be different from his previous ones and will be the peak of villainy,' begins Bakkiyaraj, who informs that Nivin will join the shoot next month.
The actor will also be dubbing for himself in the film. 'When we cast actors from other languages, they add a different colour to the film,' states the director.
'Lawrence will also play a character with a negative shade'
Talking about the character of his protagonist, played by Raghava Lawrence, the filmmaker shares, 'He plays a character with a negative shade as well.
We wanted someone rough and tough and thought that this character would suit him.' Apart from Nivin and Lawrence, another big star will also be playing an important role in the film, he reveals. ' Benz will have three female leads. We are about to finish the first schedule in Chennai.
Shooting will also happen in Mangaluru, and Rajasthan, among other places,' he adds.
'BENZ IS NEITHER A PREQUEL NOR A SEQUEL TO AN LCU FILM'
Sharing how he ended up taking over the reins of the film, he says, 'Lokesh and I are friends.

When I was working on another film, he floated the idea of other directors making films in the LCU. Since the film I was working on had a lot of CGI and its pre-production required more time, I took this up. We have been in discussions since January 2024.'
The events in this film take place in parallel to the other LCU films. 'It's neither a prequel nor a sequel, but there will be a lot of connections with the LCU. While the basic story is by Lokesh, I've worked on it and written the screenplay,' he says.
'NOW, THE OPPORTUNITY FOR MULTIPLE DIRECTORS TO WORK IN FILMS OF A UNIVERSE IS OPENING UP IN INDIAN CINEMA'
Bakkiyaraj says that he is proud to be the first director to join the LCU. 'In Hollywood, multiple directors work on various films of a particular universe. Now, such an opportunity has risen in Indian cinema,' he states, adding, 'Benz will have a totally different world and the making style will be different compared to my other two films. It isn't exactly set in the dark world of Lokesh's universe. There would be my flavour, too, with the screenplay comprising a mix of darkness, fun, and family love.
'
'I WAS SUPPOSED TO DO A TELUGU FILM BEFORE SULTHAN'
His first and second films, Remo and Sulthan , came out in 2016 and 2022 respectively. Ask him about the gaps between his films, and he says, 'I take some time between films because I keep writing them until I'm satisfied. I was supposed to do a Telugu film before Sulthan and I worked on it for two years, but I wasn't able to take it forward because I couldn't entirely grasp the language. So, I thought I would do a film in Tamil.

We will learn without imposition: Kamal Haasan on three-language policy

The ruling DMK in his home state Tamil Nadu has long opposed the three-language policy introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) Press Trust of India New Delhi Where does Kamal Haasan stand on the issue of imposition of Hindi in the south? I stand with Punjab. I stand with Karnataka. I stand with Andhra, is his quick reply. The pan-India superstar's latest film Thug Life, the 234th in a 65-year career, released in theatres this week amid controversy over his comment that Kannada was born out of Tamil. He refused to apologise and the film did not release in Karnataka. "I am the actor from 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye'..., Haasan told PTI during a recent visit to the news agency's headquarters, referring to his 1981 hit Hindi film about a Tamil boy and his romance with his Hindi speaking neighbour. Without imposition, we will learn. Don't impose, because this is ultimately education and we must take the shortest route to education and not put hurdles in its way," the actor said. The ruling DMK in his home state Tamil Nadu has long opposed the three-language policy introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP). The party has repeatedly accused the BJP-led NDA government of attempting to impose Hindi, a charge the Centre has denied. Stressing that the imposition of a particular language only hampers the learning process, the 70-year-old said, "I stand with Punjab. I stand with Karnataka. I stand with Andhra. This is not only place which is resenting imposition." The Indian cinema stalwart, hugely popular in the south as well as in the north with films such as Nayakan, Thevar Magan, "Sadma", "Saagar" and Chachi 420" that bridged language divides, said if you are truly looking at international breakthrough you must learn one language. And English seems to be fair enough. You can do Spanish also, or Chinese. But I think the most practical thing where the shortest route to that is that we have 350 years of English education, slowly but steadily. So when you suddenly replace it, it's all over again. You make unnecessarily many people illiterate, especially in Tamil Nadu. "You suddenly force all through Hindi and you tell them that you will not get your job beyond the Vindhyas, then you start wondering, what about the promises? What about my language? Am I not one of the 22 (official languages)? These are the questions that are coming." Tamil is one of the 22 official languages of the country, apart from Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had said it would not let Thug Life release unless Haasan apologised for his Kannada-Tamil comment at a promotional event in Chennai. His banner Raajkamal Films International filed a plea before the Karnataka High Court seeking protection for the release of the film, which sees him reuniting with Mani Ratnam after Nayakan in 1987. After a rap from the court over the remark, the producers said Thug Life will not be released in Karnataka.

Dressed in a stunning black sequinned gown with a daring slit and deep neckline, the actress oozed elegance, power, and poise in a shoot that's equal parts ethereal and edgy. The caption she chose? As fierce as the fit: 'All ice on the outside, all fire where it counts."🔥 Styled by the team at Bhawna Rao Luxury, with jewellery by Mr Jewels, the look brought together glam couture and unapologetic boldness. Raashii paired the shimmering halter-neck number with a sleek updo, dramatic earrings, and confident body language that instantly made this a standout moment in her fashion feed. In a series of nine images, she is seen posing behind translucent white drapes, channelling a mix of mystique and magnetism. Her expressions range from statuesque grace to quiet defiance — and it's clear she's in full control of the visual narrative. Each photo shows off the textured detailing of the gown, accentuating her statuesque silhouette and adding dimension to the black-on-black aesthetic. But it's not just the outfit that's grabbing attention. The caption seems to carry deeper meaning — a quiet flex of power and restraint. Known for her fierce screen presence and diverse acting roles, Raashii seems to be offering fans a glimpse into the duality she embodies — calm elegance on the surface, passionate fire underneath. The post, set to Charlie Jeer's Her Eyes, further enhances the mood with ambient, soul-stirring energy that matches the visuals. Raashii Khanna was last seen in Aghathiyaa, a Tamil film co-starring Arjun Sarja, Jiiva and Raashii Khanna in lead roles. In one of her interviews as part of her professional endeavours, Raashii Khanna highlighted her views on the complexities of the Hindi language. She said, 'Some of the South Indians told me how difficult Hindi is. They are unable to understand the genders in the language. They just gave up on Hindi. At that time, I understood that humari bhi bhasha thodi mushkil hai." About Aghathiyaa, the PA Vijay directorial film was released in theatres in February this year. The horror film also features Edward Sonnenblick, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Radha Ravi, Nizhagal Ravi and others in pivotal roles. Next up, Raashii Khanna will be seen in Telusu Kada, directed by renowned stylist Neeraja Kona in her directorial debut. Produced by TG Vishwa Prasad under the banner of People Media Factory, the film also stars Siddu Jonnalagadda, Srinidhi Shetty and Viva Harsha in lead roles. The romantic entertainer is based on the theme of friendship, family, sacrifice and self-love. First Published:
