Yahoo16-07-2025
Children from Cumberland will be able to swim for just 10p this summer.
All schoolchildren aged up to 16 in the area can take advantage of the offer at five indoor pools during the school summer holidays, due to a scheme from Cumberland Council, supported by GLL and Wigton Baths Trust.
Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council's executive member for vibrant and healthy places, said: "We have put health and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do, and we want to encourage the young people of Cumberland to get active.
"The 10p swims will be available in five locations, at different times throughout the week.
"It is a great opportunity for children to use our facilities at a discounted rate and will also support families."
The scheme runs from July 21 to August 31 and offers discounted swimming sessions throughout the week, including weekends at some venues.
Participating leisure centres and session times include:
Cockermouth Leisure Centre: Monday to Friday, 1pm to 1.50pm each day
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre (Whitehaven): Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 1pm - 1.50pm, Saturday: 12pm - 12.50pm, and Sunday: 10am - 10.50am
The Sands Centre (Carlisle) - July 21 to September 3. Monday to Friday and Sunday: 10am - 10.50am
Wigton Baths: Monday: 11am - 12pm and 3pm - 4pm. Tuesday: 11.15am - 12.15pm and 4.15pm - 5.15pm. Wednesday: 11.30am - 12.30pm. Thursday: 11am - 1pm.
Workington Leisure Centre: Week commencing July 21, Monday to Saturday: 11am - 11.50am. Week commencing July 28 until August 31, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 11am - 11.50am.
Tom Rice, partnership manager at GLL Cumberland, said: "As Cumberland Council's leisure partner, we are delighted to see the 10p swim initiative not only continue but also extended across the whole of the new area.
"Swimming is not only one of the healthiest activities that children can participate in but building and improving on swimming capability and confidence is a valuable life skill.
"We look forward to welcoming local children into our pools over the summer and are hoping for a huge response to this excellent initiative."
The 10p swim scheme is in addition to Cumberland's free Holiday Activity and Food Programme, which offers a range of summer activities for children.
The programme provides up to 16 fully funded days for children who qualify for free school meals, with some paid places also available.

18 Things That Are Actually Really Healthy, Despite Many People Thinking They're Not

I don't know about you, but it feels like there's a new health fad every week. First, there was intermittent fasting, then there was keto, and now, people are arguing about seed oils. I'm struggling to keep up. With so many narratives about certain things being "bad" for you, I'm starting to forget that some of that just isn't true. Luckily, I stumbled upon one Reddit thread (which you can see here), where people listed the "unhealthy" things that are actually really good for you, and it's a refreshing reminder. Related: Here are 18 things that are perfectly healthy and fine to do, despite some people thinking otherwise: Everything in moderation is key. 1."Doing nothing. Having a moment of silence." –Turtleballoon123 2."Put the baby on the floor. Babies don't always need to be in a bouncer, swing, jumper, walker, rocker, chair, etc. They do great on the floor in a safe space." –SleepXParalysis 3."It is really healthy to process some emotions and thoughts on your own. The people who have the most peace and clarity are people who can sort, experience, sit in, and evaluate their feelings without having to put it out to other people for other people to tell them what to think, feel, and do." –OptmstcExstntlst 4."Frozen vegetables. It's seen as cheap and not as good as fresh, when in fact, it's almost always healthier than 'fresh' vegetables." –Hufe Related: 5."You do not have to show up to every argument you are invited to." –Bravely_Default 6."Sleeping all day when you're exhausted. As my trainer says: If you're actually falling asleep, you clearly needed it." –EndlesslyUnfinished 7."Potatoes. It's the oil and what we do to them that makes them high in calories and unhealthy." –yamammiwammi 8."Popcorn. Without all the artificial butter flavorings and low-quality oils, of course. Popcorn is a whole grain, and super high in fiber. As far as snacks go, it's about as good as it gets." –Its_Waffle Related: 9."Being around dirt. Especially for kids. Exposure to a natural, somewhat dirty environment helps your immune system develop properly, which in turn helps reduce the chance of developing allergies or immune system diseases, and even reduces some mental health issues." –the_original_retro 10."Salt. It's been demonized by the 'health' industry for years, but it is WILDLY necessary for damn near everything in your body." –Secret-Spinach-5080 11."Having fat in your body, not an excessive amount, though. You don't need to be ripped with a completely flat stomach to be healthy." –PlasticScheme3609 12."Chocolate.... the right kind. Dark chocolate with 80% or more cocoa has massive amounts of extremely healthy stuff in it. It makes your body release stem cells in the blood, which repair almost everything." –BubiMannKuschelForce 13."Being angry. It's as valid an emotion as any, and sometimes you just need to be angry and let it out. Reacting in anger is never a good thing, though." –TheYankunian Related: 14."Saying no to children and letting them feel sadness sometimes so they can appreciate joy eventually." "My mother-in-law's grandchildren are so spoiled that nothing can make them happy; they are completely self-absorbed and never say a thank you, and they can get absolutely anything they want anytime. I've never seen children like that, and I believe that while she has good intentions, this might be harmful later." –cesonis 15."Giving your body a chance to fight off minor illnesses before turning immediately to antibiotics/virals. Like no, don't let that dog bite fester your arm right off your shoulder, but if you can walk through the sinus infection with a bottle of NyQuil, do that." –alphaturducken 16."Playing video games in moderation." –AromaticHydrocarbons 17."Not showering every day (you can wash sensitive spots every day, though, if you want to, that's understandable)." –Seirazula 18."Fruit. There are people out there who think fruit has too much sugar 🙄 " "I had a woman who full-on believed this sentence. She said, 'I'm being bad and getting a banana, it's my sugary treat.' BE SO REAL RN OMFG. Sugar isn't the enemy people!!! Moderation and sugar that our body can process easily is the key. Honey, maple syrup, sugar in fruit, and less processed/not bleached sugar are fine! Pure cane sugar is yummy, your generic sugar has so much stuff in it, the less processed (processed isn't bad since we need some of it), the better!" –MrCabrera0695 What else belongs on this list? Deion Sanders and his medical team will hold a press conference on Monday

For Hall of Fame defensive back and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, questions have swirled about his health for several weeks. Answers apparently are coming on Monday. Via Chantz Martin of Sanderswill conduct a press conference on Monday. Officially, the event is expected to "provide general and team updates." Per the announcement, as posted by Chris Vannini of Sanders will be joined by "his medical team." Sanders's involvement in spring and summer camps was limited by an unspecified health issue. He participated in the Big 12 Media Days earlier this month. "I'm already back," Sanders said on July 9. "I'm here today. I'm handling my responsibilities. So, I look forward to it. I can't wait. You've got to understand, some of the young [players] I haven't even met yet. I'm so excited about that." On July 20, Sanders said this in a video posted by his son, Deion Sanders Jr.: "You know I'm still going through something. . . . I ain't all the way recovered." Since then, Deion visited Tampa Bay training camp, where his son Shilo is trying to make the team. Some clarity could be coming. Don't be shocked if something leaks before the press conference starts. Whatever it may be, we wish Deion the best.

World Aquatics Championships 2025: Stomach bug appears to wreak havoc with Team USA; Katie Ledecky finishes third in 400 freestyle

The 2025 World Aquatics Championships are underway and Team USA got off to a slow start after several swimmers came down with a stomach bug. SwimSwam reported that a significant chunk of Team USA suffered from acute gastroenteritis at its pre-world championship training camp in Thailand. One coach with an athlete on the team described the amount of swimmers affected as "almost half" the roster. It was later reported by both SwimSwam and Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde that 10 swimmers were deemed too sick to travel with the rest of the team. The issue is also apparently hitting Great Britain's team, which used the same Thanyapura Phuket resort to prepare for worlds. In the first day of action in Singapore, three-time Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske and rising star Claire Weinstein both pulled out of events. USA Swimming announced Huske was pulling out of the 100-meter butterfly, the event she won in Paris, to focus on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. The U.S. then finished second in the 400 free relay final just .44 seconds behind gold-medal-winning Australia — an admirable result given star Gretchen Walsh pulled out shortly before the event. Katie Ledecky was able to compete, renewing her rivalry with Canada's Summer McIntosh in the 400 freestyle. McIntosh comfortably won the final in 3:56.26 with Ledecky finishing third at 3:58.49. Neither Ledecky nor McIntosh swam near their best times from earlier in the year. McIntosh, who won three gold medals at last year's Paris Olympics, is attempting to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmers to win five golds at a World Championships. The bronze was Ledecky's 27th career World Championships medal. Australia won the men's 400 free relay with the United States finishing third. As Forde noted, the American men also struggled in the heats for the 400-meter freestyle. All of them missed out on the final after failing to finish in the top 8. The swimming portion of the World Aquatics Championships are scheduled to take place until next Sunday.
