Yahoo16-07-2025
Children from Cumberland will be able to swim for just 10p this summer.
All schoolchildren aged up to 16 in the area can take advantage of the offer at five indoor pools during the school summer holidays, due to a scheme from Cumberland Council, supported by GLL and Wigton Baths Trust.
Cllr Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council's executive member for vibrant and healthy places, said: "We have put health and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do, and we want to encourage the young people of Cumberland to get active.
"The 10p swims will be available in five locations, at different times throughout the week.
"It is a great opportunity for children to use our facilities at a discounted rate and will also support families."
The scheme runs from July 21 to August 31 and offers discounted swimming sessions throughout the week, including weekends at some venues.
Participating leisure centres and session times include:
Cockermouth Leisure Centre: Monday to Friday, 1pm to 1.50pm each day
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre (Whitehaven): Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 1pm - 1.50pm, Saturday: 12pm - 12.50pm, and Sunday: 10am - 10.50am
The Sands Centre (Carlisle) - July 21 to September 3. Monday to Friday and Sunday: 10am - 10.50am
Wigton Baths: Monday: 11am - 12pm and 3pm - 4pm. Tuesday: 11.15am - 12.15pm and 4.15pm - 5.15pm. Wednesday: 11.30am - 12.30pm. Thursday: 11am - 1pm.
Workington Leisure Centre: Week commencing July 21, Monday to Saturday: 11am - 11.50am. Week commencing July 28 until August 31, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 11am - 11.50am.
Tom Rice, partnership manager at GLL Cumberland, said: "As Cumberland Council's leisure partner, we are delighted to see the 10p swim initiative not only continue but also extended across the whole of the new area.
"Swimming is not only one of the healthiest activities that children can participate in but building and improving on swimming capability and confidence is a valuable life skill.
"We look forward to welcoming local children into our pools over the summer and are hoping for a huge response to this excellent initiative."
The 10p swim scheme is in addition to Cumberland's free Holiday Activity and Food Programme, which offers a range of summer activities for children.
The programme provides up to 16 fully funded days for children who qualify for free school meals, with some paid places also available.

China prodigy takes on swimming world aged 12

Yu Zidi discovered swimming as a small child in order to cool off and now aged just 12 the Chinese sensation will showcase her prodigious talents at the world championships from Sunday. The school girl with the cartoon dog themed swimming cap stunned the sport in May with a series of eye-popping times at China's national championships. Yu, who turns 13 in October, clocked a blistering 2min 10.63sec in the women's 200m individual medley, the fastest time in history at that age. She then romped to victory in the 400m medley in 4:35.53, which would have been enough for fourth place at the Paris Olympics last summer. Yu also triumphed in the 200m butterfly in another scarcely believable swim that would again have only narrowly missed out on a medal in Paris. Her performances easily qualified her for the world championships in Singapore. Yu, who trains in the northern province of Hebei and juggles swimming with her school work, took up the sport as a means of escaping China's searing heat. "The summer that year was too hot, so I went to the water park with my dad," she told the state news agency Xinhua. "I often went to cool off at swimming pools... (and) a coach discovered me." Swimming, homework and coping with the pressure of being China's latest big sporting hope makes for a hectic schedule for the youngster. "I am very busy every day and I don't have much time, but it's also very fulfilling," Yu said, according to Xinhua. Yu first came to national attention last year and drew comparisons at home to Ye Shiwen, who at 16 in London became the youngest Chinese swimmer to win a medal at the Olympics. As well as her speed and stamina, Yu's Hebei coach Li Chao has praised her "good sense" and said her focus "far exceeds her peers". Michael Bohl, China's storied Australian swimming coach, went much further. "I've never seen a 12-year-old that could swim like this," he told Chinese state broadcaster CCTV in May. - Team doping shadow - Perhaps with an eye on the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, China have named their youngest squad for a swimming world championships, according to expert website SwimSwam. Along with Yu, the headline acts in the squad are men's 100m freestyle world record holder and Olympic champion Pan Zhanle, and Qin Haiyang and Zhang Yufei. Qin cleaned up in the breaststroke at the worlds in 2023, only to fail to win a medal in individual events at the Paris Games last summer. He did though win gold and silver in medley relays. "Butterfly Queen" Zhang has won 10 Olympic medals, among them 200m fly gold at Tokyo in 2021. China entered the Paris Olympics under a doping cloud following revelations that 23 of its swimmers had tested positive for a banned substance ahead of the Tokyo Games. In April 2024, The New York Times and German broadcaster ARD said they had tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) at a domestic competition in late 2020 and early 2021. Chinese anti-doping authorities determined the 23 had ingested trace amounts of the drug unwittingly from tainted food at their hotel. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted that explanation and did not sanction the swimmers, which led US anti-doping authorities to accuse WADA of a cover-up. WADA denies this. Nine of the swimmers who failed doping tests are competing in Singapore, including Qin and Zhang. mya/je/pst

Deion Sanders returns to Colorado after health issue: ‘Back and feeling great'

Colorado coach Deion Sanders has returned to campus in Boulder, according to a video posted by Well Off Media, a YouTube channel run by his oldest son, Deion Sanders Jr. Sanders Jr. posted a video on Friday showing his father walking through the facility and into the coaches' meeting room with a caption 'Staff Meeting.' Advertisement 'You can come in if you want,' Sanders says in the video. 'Back and feeling great!' he posted on X earlier in the day. Since leaving Boulder a few days after Colorado's April 19 spring game, Sanders has spent most of the last three months on his ranch in Canton, Texas, a city outside Dallas. Sanders has been dealing with an unspecified health issue and is expected to address the media alongside his medical team in Boulder on Monday, according to an announcement Colorado made Friday. This summer, Sanders referenced on a podcast that he'd lost 14 pounds during the health episode. He declined to elaborate on his health when asked by The Athletic at Big 12 Media Days earlier this month. 'I'm not here to talk about my health,' Sanders said. 'I'm here to talk about my team.' Sanders has said multiple times during his absence that he would inform the public of his health situation at some point in the future. Colorado athletic director Rick George told The Athletic on July 9 that Sanders would be returning to campus 'in a week or two, probably.' George said he had no problem with Sanders' physical absence and that the two have been in constant contact since he's been away. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark checked in on Sanders' health daily, Sanders said. Sanders wasn't present on campus during a five-week recruiting period this offseason, wasn't present for a series of camps and canceled a scheduled speaking engagement in Florida in June. After his appearance at media days, Sanders said in a Well Off Media video that he was leaving on a private plane to shoot a commercial. Earlier this month, he also filmed a commercial for Aflac at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Before arriving in Boulder, Sanders first stopped in Tampa, Fla. to watch his son and former CU player Shilo Sanders practice. The 25-year-old defensive back signed with the Buccaneers in April as an undrafted free agent. Advertisement Throughout his absence, Sanders was in daily contact with his staff, a person briefed on the situation told The Athletic. Sanders has a history of blood clot issues, and in 2021, had two toes amputated. In 2023, he had surgery to relieve the clots that kept him from attending Pac-12 media days and spent most of that offseason in pain and limping before reaching his stated goal of running out on the field with his team to begin the season. It's unclear if his current health issue is related to his past issues with clots. Sanders Jr. posted a video earlier this week announcing his and his father's plans to leave the ranch in Canton and return to Boulder. 'It's not even about being here. It's the battle that was fought. It's the battle that was fought and won here,' Sanders Jr. tells the camera in the video. 'That's the main important thing. Boy didn't leave the house for two months.'
