Local author discusses Valley's brewing history ahead of Rotary Club's Beerfest
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Fans of craft beer will have a chance to quench their thirst this Saturday. Members of the Youngstown Rotary Club heard from local author and historian Thomas Welsh on Wednesday afternoon about the Valley's own history with brewing. It comes ahead of the Rotary Club's seventh annual Ground Hogs Day Beerfest on Saturday. Welsh said local brewing can be traced back to the mid-1840s in Youngstown. 'These were about 15 breweries that operated in the Mahoning Valley at one time or another in the decades leading up to prohibition. Three were operating in the Mahoning Valley on the eve of prohibition,' Welsh said. The Beerfest will feature 20 craft brews from around the region. The event will take place Saturday at Stambaugh Auditorium with two sessions — from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Peoria Rotary Club holding Mardi Gras fundraiser
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A taste of New Orleans is coming to central Illinois. The Rotary Club of Peoria North will be holding its second annual Mardi Gras party this February. Ashley Schreck, the president of the club, stopped by WMBD This Morning to talk about the event. Schreck said the party will have plenty of entertainment, including live music by Dexter O'Neal and The Funk Yard Band. There will also be raffles for a European river cruise and a collection of rare bourbon. But behind all the fun, the event is ultimately about helping an important cause. 'We've done many events in our 50-plus year history,' Schreck explained. 'This one in particular is to help us end human trafficking.' Everybody's Got a Story: The Center for Prevention of Abuse connecting to youth in new way To help achieve this goal, the Rotary Club is partnering with the Center for Prevention of Abuse and the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery. 'It's something that we thought we could partner with on a global and a national scale,' Schreck said. And if you're not able to attend the Mardi Gras event in person, Schreck said there are still ways you can help. There are still sponsorship options available, and you can also join the Rotary Club yourself. 'We're always looking for new members,' Schreck told us. The Mardi Gras party will be held February 28 from 6-10 p.m. at The Warehouse on State in Peoria. Tickets are available at Love WMBD This Morning? We love you, too.
