Pope Francis: A bridge-builder vexed by fissures
often surprised the world by breaking
Vatican
traditions. He elevated several men from remote corners of the world to the rank of cardinal—the highest position in the Catholic Church after the Pope. During his 12-year tenure, he reshaped the pastoral direction of Kerala's three self-governing Churches—Latin, Syro-Malabar, and Syro-Malankara—through key appointments of archbishops and bishops, along with timely guidance to clergy and believers.
In 2016, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Joseph Kalathiparambil—then secretary of the Vatican's pontifical council for the pastoral care of migrants and itinerant people—as archbishop of Verapoly. In Kerala's Latin Church hierarchy, Pope Francis picked all three archbishops, including those of Trivandrum and the newly-formed Calicut archdiocese, as well as most of the bishops. He also appointed many archbishops and bishops in Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Churches.
Pope Francis had to step in during a tense period in
Syro-Malabar Church
, the second-largest of the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches. When the synod of bishops faced protests from some clergy and laity over financial allegations and property issues at Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese—the seat of the major archbishop—the matter reached the Holy See. Eventually, the Vatican removed Cardinal Mar George Alencherry from his role as major archbishop.
In Aug 2021, Syro-Malabar Church's synod ordered a uniform Holy Mass across its 35 eparchies. But clergy and laity in Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese resisted, insisting on continuing the people-facing Mass, a practice adopted after the Second Vatican Council. Even a video appeal from the Pope failed to change their stand. Protests turned violent at St. Mary's Basilica in Ernakulam.

Pope Francis worked hard to strengthen
ecumenical ties
with various Orthodox Christian Churches. He led key meetings with Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem-II of Antioch, head of Syrian Orthodox Church, who recently consecrated a Catholicos for Malankara Jacobite Church in Lebanon. He also invited the Catholicos of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, based in Kottayam. In Nov 2024, a delegation of eight bishops from the synod of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church met him at the Vatican.
Pope Francis, the first pope to visit the Arabian Peninsula, played a key role in building bridges between the Christian and Islamic worlds. He signed the Declaration of Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi. His strong stand against the 'madness of war' and the destruction in Gaza won widespread support, especially from Kerala's peace-loving Muslim community. In Dec 2024, he hosted Sivagiri Mutt's centenary commemoration of Sree Narayana Guru's historic all-religion conference at the Vatican, praising Kerala's tradition of religious harmony.

US wants deeper Pakistan trade ties: Trump administration eyes critical minerals, hydrocarbons; move after ‘massive oil reserves' pitch
The US government has expressed its eagerness to enhance collaboration with Pakistan. US President Donald Trump's government is looking to deepen its economic ties with Pakistan at a time when trade deal talks with India remain stalled. The US government has expressed its eagerness to enhance collaboration with Pakistan in the fields of critical minerals and hydrocarbons, with a renewed emphasis on economic cooperation in other emerging sectors. This announcement was made in a congratulatory message for Pakistan's Independence Day. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the significance of ongoing partnership between the two countries. "On behalf of the United States, I extend our warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan as they celebrate their Independence Day on August 14," Rubio said in a release from the US Department of State, according to an ANI report. Top points to know 'We are eager to explore new economic collaboration opportunities, such as in critical minerals and hydrocarbons, and to encourage vibrant business partnerships that will ensure a prosperous future for both Americans and Pakistanis," the statement continued. This message is issued as Washington aims to strengthen its relationship with India's neighboring country. Trump's 'massive oil reserves' in Pakistan dreams In July, Trump revealed a trade agreement with Pakistan, highlighting a joint effort to develop the country's oil reserves and suggesting that "someday" Islamabad might sell oil to New Delhi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ukraine: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo In a Truth Social post, Trump mentioned that the United States and Pakistan are in the process of selecting an oil company for their partnership. Oil reserves: Pakistan not even a drop! He had said, "We have finalized a deal with Pakistan, where both countries will collaborate on developing Pakistan's extensive oil reserves. We are currently choosing the oil company to lead this partnership. Perhaps, in the future, they might sell oil to India!" Trump's claim about helping Pakistan develop large oil reserves for potential exports to India seems overly optimistic. A TOI report indicates that Pakistan holds only 0.02% of the world's crude oil reserves. Pakistan produces about 70,000 barrels of oil daily, which is less than 10% of India's production. Instead of being seen as a future energy exporter, Pakistan's current role in the global oil market is quite minor. A Reuters report states that Pakistan's proven crude oil reserves range from 234 million to 353 million barrels, ranking it 50th in the world for crude oil reserves. Conversely, India faced a 25 percent tariff under the new plan. Furthermore, Trump announced an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total to 50 percent, due to India's ongoing oil purchases from Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has criticized the US's decision to impose additional tariffs, describing it as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable." The MEA also stated that New Delhi would take "all necessary actions to safeguard its national interests." Germany: 1,300 Syrians return home since fall of Assad
. Some 1,337 Syrians living in Germany have gone back to Syria voluntarily since President Bashar Assad was deposed in December last year, the German Interior Ministry said on Wednesday. The data was collected until the end of July. More than 1 million Syrians, many of whom fled their homeland during the bloody civil war, live in Germany. The announcement came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz — who has made reducing immigration and increasing deportations a main focus of his government — marked his first 100 days in office. Germany encourages Syrians to return to their home country The German government suspended processing asylum applications for Syrians, except in certain individual cases, in December. Other applications have been put on ice while the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) continues to assess what was a "very volatile" security situation in Syria, a spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry said. At the same time, the German government has been encouraging Syrians to leave Germany of their own free will. In April, the Interior Ministry said it would allow Syrian refugees to visit their home country for short periods without fear of losing their protected status. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo A ministry spokesperson said that the aim was to enable Syrians to make the decision to return to Syria voluntarily. "To do this, people from Syria must be able to see for themselves — for example, whether [their] houses are still standing, whether their relatives are still alive and so on," they said in April. German interior minister pushing for deportations Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, however, is continuing to work toward the deportation of Syrians, his ministry said. As with the recent renewed deportation of people to Afghanistan, the ministry said it would start by targeting convicted criminals. However, the coalition government is also considering compelling people from Syria to return to their home country due to the change in the situation there. "We are working on organizing additional deportation flights to Afghanistan and also to Syria," Dobrindt said last week. The push for deportations to Afghanistan and Syria has come under fire due to the continued precariousness of the security situation in those countries.
