Banyana relinquish their African throne

The Herald6 days ago
Desiree Ellis's side suffered a blow midway through the first half when dependable centre half Tiiesetso Makhubela was forced to limp off with an injury.
Surprisingly, Ellis did not replace Makhubela with another defender but opted to bring on striker Hildah Magaia to partner Seoposenwe, with Gabriela Salgado moved to the left side of the midfield.
But the Super Falcons always looked dangerous, especially with Esther Okoronkwo and skipper Rasheeday Ajibade giving them a lot of options and providing plenty of supply for the strikers, Folashade Ijamilusi and Chinwendu Ihezuo.
It was amid that dominance that Ijamulisi forced Banyana defender Bambanani Mbane to handle her shot inside the area on the stroke of halftime.
The referee pointed to the spot and Ajibade made no mistake.
Though Dlamini nearly cost Banyana with another mistake at the restart, Banyana did eventually find an equaliser on the hour mark when Magaia had been fouled by Osinachi Ohale inside the area.
Linda Motlhalo, Banyana's penalty specialist, gave Chiamaka Nnadozie in goals for Nigeria no chance as she slotted her second penalty in the tournament.
After this goal, Banyana gained control and were unlucky to see Noxolo Cesane's shot cleared off the line by Ohale after Seoposenwe had played a lovely diagonal pass for the substitute.
Ten minutes before fulltime, Salgado suffered a nasty injury while trying to clear a corner kick.
This was a second forced substitute for SA after Makhubela left the field injured too in the first half.
The Super Falcons will await the winner of hosts Morocco against Ghana to find out who they will face in the final in Rabat on Saturday.

Banyana Banyana make low-key return to SA after WAFCON exit

JOHANNESBURG - The Banyana Banyana squad made a low-key return to the country following their disappointing showing at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. There were no adoring supporters or any of the fanfare normally associated with South African teams returning home from competing on the global stage. Only a handful of friends and family were present to welcome the players home on Monday night and were outnumbered by the media contingent that was at OR Tambo International Airport for the team's arrival. Banyana went to the tournament as the reigning champions but finished in fourth place after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in the semi-finals and a penalty shootout defeat against Ghana in the bronze medal match. While the players were visibly flat and despondent and made a quick exit from the arrivals terminal, Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, faced questions from journalists about their campaign as well as her future with the national team. Ellis has been the subject of speculation since reports emerged before the tournament started that she had been working without a contract from SAFA for close to two years. There have been reports that Ellis would leave her position after WAFCON as well. She declined to comment on her current situation and what the next step for her would be. "I'm not going to comment. I've been taken out of context on numerous occasions and I think it's best I don't comment on that. Already, all over the media, what people are writing is not true. Certain things are not true. When people write, they must get the facts right, first of all. They write the wrong things. I'm not going to say anything, I'm saying 'No comment' purely because I don't want to be misquoted, because I've been badly misquoted during this tournament," said Ellis. Ellis did seem to indicate, however, that she did have her thoughts on the next tournament, which is the 2026 Women's AFCON, which will also be staged in Morocco. She said the first priority must be the qualifiers against DR Congo in October.

Grey triumph in muddy battle against Framesby

Grey High ' s effective line-out maul rose to the occasion in the nick of time when they averted a fourth straight loss to Framesby with a 19-15 win in a pulsating King Price Derby Series schools rugby clash on the Kolisi Field on Saturday. Played in incredibly muddy conditions with rain pouring down at stages, the visitors were devastated at the end as they agonisingly failed to pull off another memorable win after taking the lead for the first time in the match in the 63rd minute with a try by flank David Matyani. This came after an ambitious Grey move to run the ball broke down in midfield and the ball was kicked ahead for Matyani to win the race to glory. Jaiden Brewis ' s conversion made it 15-14 to Framesby with the final whistle looming, but the Grey team kept their composure to force their way into their opponents ' territory. A penalty in their favour and a kick into the 22 set them up for another driving maul. Framesby had failed to hold them in this department in the first half and again their cohesion and power were just too much, allowing flank Cody Wilmot to cross for his third try. With just three minutes remaining, Grey won a line-out from the kickoff and again produced a devastating driving maul, taking them about 40 metres downfield and ending in another penalty. Though Framesby stole the ball from the final line-out, they were pegged deep in their territory and there was no way for them to get back into the lead. The conditions prevented the match from being a spectacle, but there was no doubting the courage and passion of both sides as they fought for supremacy on a slippery field. Grey scored first through Wilmot from a line-out maul, Tristan Kemp adding the conversion, but Framesby made it 7-5 at the break when hooker Luke Didoft dived over after a series of forward drives close to the Grey line. Three minutes into the second half, Wilmot returned the compliment as it became Grey ' s turn to apply the pressure to go out to a 14-7 lead. Brewis landed a penalty with 10 minutes to go and soon after that they went ahead through Matyani, only to be denied by a final, determined Grey effort. In Kariega, Brandwag powered to a 62-3 victory over Muir to secure the Tinara Cup which the two sides compete for along with Daniel Pienaar. With one match to play against Daniel Pienaar, Brandwag have already done enough (two wins over Muir and one against Daniel Pienaar) to seal the title as the 2025 champions. Conditions in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and surrounding areas were less than ideal for rugby, with rainy and cold conditions persisting throughout the afternoon. This saw Pearson and Graeme College slog it out in a 10-10 draw, while, in a freezing Humansdorp, Nico Malan had too many guns for the visiting DF Malherbe team, winning 50-5. — Additional reporting by
