Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, has responded to the recent update issued by the United States Department of State regarding its travel advisory for South Africa.
While recognising the sovereign right of nations to provide travel guidance for their citizens, the Minister emphasised South Africa's commitment to the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all visitors to its shores.
In light of the recent discussions between President Cyril Ramaphosa and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, and the wave of media coverage that followed, the Minister reiterated that South Africa is a premier travel destination known for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural diversity, and the acclaimed warmth of its people.
'While challenges such as crime exist—as they do across the globe—the overwhelming majority of international visitors experience safe travel in South Africa and leave with enriching memories,' de Lille said.
Indeed, in 2024, the number of arrivals from the US rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, surpassing even the United Kingdom to become South Africa's largest source market for international visitors.
In the first four months of 2025, 111,491 visitors arrived from the USA alone, a clear testament to the enduring appeal and confidence in South Africa as a travel destination.

Recognising traveller concerns, de Lille encouraged visitors to maintain the level of vigilance and awareness customary when travelling abroad.
Furthermore, the government is dedicated to actively addressing safety through coordinated efforts between law enforcement, the tourism sector, and local communities.
Regular security enhancements, including a heightened presence of trained Tourism Monitors in key tourism nodes and ongoing safety assessments, contribute to a secure travel environment.
'Ensuring visitor safety remains a national priority. We are collaborating with various sectors including government officials and stakeholders in tourism to implement proactive safety measures and ensure rapid incident responses,' the Minister clarified.
As the tourism industry continues to bounce back, the Minister called upon media outlets and global government agencies to present a balanced view of South Africa, distinguishing between isolated incidents and the overall positive experiences reported by millions of safe travellers.
'We are in close communication with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation and want to reassure all potential travellers: South Africa is open and welcoming. We are devoted to providing every visitor with a safe and pleasurable journey,' de Lille said.

'With all eyes on the race, we are hoping that it will inspire people, whether they watch it on the roadside or on their televisions, to choose KZN for their next holiday or attend one of our many sporting events that are hosted in our province,' he added. Gumbi said at least 1800 jobs were created because the CMA brings more visitors to the region than any other big international sporting event. 'With the route going through some suburbs, there will be 47 refreshment stations and several 'fun, vibey' activation points and spectator zones to support the runners,' Dalais said. The previous record for the Down Run was 19,047 runners set in 2018. Presidency doesn't view latest US travel alert for SA as a matter of concern
CAPE TOWN - The Presidency said it did not view the level two travel alert issued for South Africa by the United States government as a matter of concern. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said it was standard practice for the US government to issue regular travel advisories for dozens of countries around the world. The Department of Tourism said that 110,000 US citizens visited the country last year, and visitor numbers from that country in the first four months of this year surpassed visitor numbers from the United Kingdom. In its travel advisory issued last week, the US state department said it was issuing the caution owing to the prevalence of violent crime in the country particularly robbery, rape, carjacking and kidnappings. Magwenya said he did not believe that the latest advisory would have a severe impact on tourism to the country. "With respect to South Africa, the travel alert just lists the kind of crimes that most South Africans, if not all South Africans, fall victim to, or crimes that confront us as a country. There's nothing new there in that regard."
