Maha social media circular threatto democratic values: Dhanorkar
2
Chandrapur: Chandrapur MP Pratibha Dhanorkar has slammed the Maharashtra government's recent resolution issued on July 28 restricting social media use by government employees, calling it a direct attack on freedom of expression and a threat to democratic values.
In a letter to CM Devendra Fadnavis, Dhanorkar demanded immediate withdrawal of the circular. The directive framed under Maharashtra Civil Services Rules, 1979, lays down strict conditions barring govt staff from making 'criticising the govt', engaging in 'self-promotion', and sharing confidential information online. It further mandates the separation of personal and official social media accounts, bans use of certain apps, and warns of disciplinary action for non-compliance.
Calling the move 'draconian and unconstitutional', the Congress MP said the resolution seeks to silence govt employees and suppress their right to express views in a democratic setup. "This is not just a govt circular but an infringement on the constitutional rights guaranteed to every citizen, including public servants," Dhanorkar said.
She argued that while protecting confidential information is important, the govt cannot 'misuse' such provisions to curb fundamental freedom. "Conditions like barring critical opinions or restricting creative expression will put undue pressure on employees and stifle their independent thinking," she said.
"The circular is against the spirit of our democracy. I demand it to be withdrawn without delay in the interest of justice, transparency, and freedom," she added.

Rahul-Tejashwi preparing stage to justify their defeat in the upcoming Assembly election: Bihar Minister Sanjay Saraogi
Bihar Minister and BJP leader Sanjay Saraogi on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) took a dig at the INDIA bloc's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', claiming that the rally was not for voter's rights, but an exercise to justify the grouping's defeat in the upcoming Assembly election in the State. The Vote Adhikar Yatra was launched by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on August 17 in protest against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State. Addressing the press at the BJP state headquarters, Mr. Saraogi said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Rohtas as part of the yatra, presented a woman named Renu Devi, claiming that the names of six members of her family had been deleted from the voters' list after SIR. However, within 24 hours, that claim was exposed as false, he said, and added that Mr. Gandhi must apologise to the people of the country. Mr. Saraogi further said that the data Mr. Gandhi relied upon for planning the yatra came from the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). 'Professor Sanjay Kumar of CSDS has already apologised in connection with the Maharashtra election figures, admitting that errors had been made. If the psephologist himself has apologised, will Rahul Gandhi now apologise to the nation?' he asked. He alleged that the RJD and the Congress had always followed the policy of 'take the votes – abandon the people'. Mr. Saraogi pointed out that in reality, both parties are preparing excuses in advance for their defeat in the upcoming Assembly election by protesting against SIR. 'Booth capturing under Cong.' The BJP leader also alleged that during the Congress's rule, vote theft was institutionalised, and many incidents of booth capturing took place. Taking a jibe at the INDIA bloc, Mr. Saraogi said it is making a mockery of the Constitution by taking out a yatra in the name of voter's rights. He also claimed that the Opposition is in panic because 'infiltrators' names' are being removed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Making a scathing attack at RJD chief Lalu Prasad, Mr. Saraogi said the 'convicted criminal' has no moral right to question constitutional institutions. This so-called 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' is nothing but a fraudulent exercise, he added.

‘Going back to medieval times': Rahul Gandhi slams Centre over Bills to remove PM, CMs
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of dragging India 'back to medieval times' as he hit out at new bills that would allow the removal of prime ministers and chief ministers facing prolonged detention on serious criminal charges. Rahul's remarks come after Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled three Bills in the Lok Sabha to allow the removal of prime ministers, chief ministers and ministers held in custody for 30 days on serious criminal charges, sparking uproar as opposition MPs tore up copies and marched towards his bench chanting slogans. "There's a lot of action going on the new bill that the BJP is proposing. We are going back to medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at will," Gandhi said at a function to felicitate the Opposition's vice presidential candidate B Sudershan Reddy. "There is no concept of what an elected person is. He doesn't like your face, so he tells the ED to file a case and then democratically-elected person is wiped out within 30 days. This is new," he added. The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha also accused the BJP of attempting a Maharashtra-style "vote theft" in Bihar, asserting that such efforts will fail in the upcoming polls. Speaking at the function in the central hall of Samvidhan Sadan (old Parliament), Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said the Constitutional Amendment Bill that undermines the core values of parliamentary democracy and federalism is being introduced in subterfuge at the fag end of the session, leaving no scope for meaningful debate or scrutiny. He said over the last 11 years, "we have witnessed the blatant misuse of parliamentary majority to arm the autonomous agencies like ED, I-T, and CBI with draconian powers to target opposition leaders." "Now, these new bills are set to become instruments in the hands of the ruling party to further undermine and destabilise democratically elected governments in the states. In Parliament, we have seen a growing trend of stifling opposition voices. We are repeatedly denied the opportunity to raise matters of vital public concern in the House," Kharge noted. The Congress chief also alleged that Parliament has been reduced to a tool for advancing the ruling party's ideology, with several important bills being passed amid din and without proper deliberation. The three bills are the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025. The bills have proposed that if the prime minister, Union ministers or chief ministers, are arrested and detained in custody for 30 consecutive days for offences that attract a jail term of at least five years, they will lose their job on the 31st day. According to the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, there is no provision under the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963 for the removal of a chief minister or a minister arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges. Hence, there is a need to amend section 45 of the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, to provide a legal framework for the removal of a chief minister or a minister in such cases, it said. Opposition lawmakers denounced the move as a threat to federalism and due process, warning it could be weaponised for political ends and push the country towards a police state.

Cab unions protest exclusion from meet with aggregators
Panaji: Upset about being kept out of a meeting on Goa's transportation sector, Goa's taxi unions staged a silent protest outside the transport department on Wednesday. The unions' members questioned why they were not invited to govt's meeting with Ola and Uber. Given that representatives from app-based taxi aggregators were present at the meeting, taxi union leaders suspect that govt is in talks with Ola and Uber to commence operations in Goa. Transport minister Mauvin Godinho did not deny that app-based aggregators were present at the meeting. However, he said that the meeting was convened by the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and public policy consultant, Chase Advisors. 'After deliberations, let's see what recommendations come from them. All industry bodies have supported taxi aggregators. The taxi operators don't want this. They want to go back to the old system, no aggregator, make one trip and sit at home. How long can this go on?' said Godinho. He mentioned that govt would be holding a meeting with local taxi unions in the coming days. The taxi operators questioned CM Pramod Sawant's assurance in the assembly that no app-based services would be granted approval to operate in Goa. 'The transport minister said that he would take strict action against Ola and Uber if they are found operating in the state. To date, no action has been taken against them, but instead, the minister has gone and sat with them for tea,' said one of the taxi operators. They criticised govt for charging hefty fees for the installation of digital taxi meters. 'Digital meters that are available for Rs 3,500 have been installed for Rs 11,500. The minister must publicly explain why this was done. A control room was supposed to be created to monitor the taxis that had installed digital meters. Where is this control room? Why are we made to pay Rs 5,000 every year?' said the taxi operators. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
