Lakers Coach Details LeBron James' Leadership: 'He Sets The Example For Everyone'
LeBron James may be entering his 22nd NBA season, but his commitment to the game hasn't wavered one bit. In a behind-the-scenes story that highlights just how much the 40-year-old superstar still influences the Lakers' culture, assistant coach Nate McMillan praised James for setting the tone last season with his unmatched preparation and professionalism.
'When LeBron reported last year, he came in after the Olympics, he took a vacation with his family, then he came in mid-September,' McMillan said on the 'Sports Shop' podcast. 'From that day forward, he was the first to be everywhere. First in the building, first on the plane, first in the meetings, and I was like 'Wow.' He's setting the example.'
It's often said that maintaining a proper work ethic is half the equation to finding success in the NBA. For LeBron James, he's been working hard from day one to maximize his skill, adapt his game over time, and keep his body in peak condition.
For most aging superstars, it's a tough ask to set the example by being the first to show up to team-related activities, but James is the exception. Even at 40, LeBron continues to outpace his teammates and outwork much younger peers.
With averages of 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game on 51.3% shooting last season, James' work paid off with another All-Star caliber season. Even better, it helped elevate the Lakers to a top-three seed in the Western Conference.
Now that Luka Doncic is on the roster, LeBron can show him all the tricks he uses every summer to ensure he's at the top of his game. He'll keep setting the tone in L.A., pushing his teammates to match his elite standard. For LeBron, it starts with simply showing up as early and often as he can when he's got an opportunity to hone his craft or build chemistry with his teammates.
McMillan Reveals Key Differences Between LeBron And Kobe
While LeBron's work ethic cannot be questioned, many critics have called out his demeanor and competitive spirit. While guys like Kobe Bryant were out to torture their opponents, LeBron doesn't have that same approach, and McMillan says it's the biggest thing that separates him from the "assassins" of the game.
'I think they're different. A lot of people compare LeBron to Kobe and Michael," said the Lakers coach. "As athletes, yeah, you can do that, but I would compare Kobe more to Michael and LeBron more to Magic. They're different players and they play the game differently. I look at Kobe and Michael as assassins. And I look at Magic and LeBron as guys that, they'll kill you too, but they do it in a different way.'
While Kobe and Jordan made it a point to antagonize the enemy, LeBron is much less emotional when he's doing his thing, and it makes him closer to someone like Magic Johnson, who operated in a very similar way.
Regardless of which legend you compare him to, what LeBron is doing now is unprecedented in NBA history. At 40 years old and with 22 years of experience in the NBA, he's still playing elite-level basketball and is putting in the same work that he did as a rookie in 2003. That consistency is what separates LeBron from everyone else, and it's one of the many reasons why he has a chance to pull off something special next season. This story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 7, 2025, where it first appeared.

NBA Opening Night to reportedly feature Rockets-Thunder, Warriors-Lakers, with 5-game slate on Christmas Day
The schedule for the 2025-2026 NBA season is starting to take place, as early pieces of the schedule are making their way out. For Opening Night on Oct. 21, the NBA will kick off the year with two big games on NBC, per ESPN's Shams Charania. The night will include the Houston Rockets playing the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Golden State Warriors traveling to the Los Angeles Lakers. The first matchup has the defending NBA champs hosting the Rockets, who finished second in the West last season. The second could pit two league heavyweights, Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Lakers forward LeBron James, against each other to start the season (though James' future with the Lakers is currently a little uncertain). Either way, it opens the season with the league's triumphant return to NBC, as the network hosts NBA games for the first time in more than two decades. In addition to Opening Night, Charania has offered up a report on the NBA's Christmas Day slate. Those matchups are: Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder Houston Rockets at the Lakers Dallas Mavericks at the Warriors Minnesota Timberwolves at the Denver Nuggets This story will be updated.

Paige Bueckers out for Wings-Liberty on Friday as she deals with back injury
Paige Bueckers is out for Friday's game between the Dallas Wings and New York Liberty as she deals with tightness in her back. Head coach Chris Koclanes said on Thursday that he expected her to play, even though the No. 1 overall pick skipped practice. She was listed as questionable on the injury report. Dallas' franchise player exited the third quarter of the Wings' 85-76 loss to the Liberty on Tuesday. Post-game, Bueckers told the Associated Press, "I was just dribbling the ball and just felt a tightness come along." "It's day to day. I'm hoping it won't take me out. Just get some treatment, get some rest. I think it's just a pulled muscle. I felt a strain, felt it tighten, so I am just getting it worked out." After receiving treatment, Bueckers returned in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Although the expectations are high for the former UConn star, the Wings have struggled, entering the Liberty rematch with an 8-22 record, 12th in the WNBA standings. Nevertheless, Bueckers has been putting up solid numbers, averaging 18.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game. She has scored at least 20 points in Dallas' last four outings despite losing their last three games. Bueckers leads the struggling Wings in points, assists and steals. The Wings are facing a Liberty team that has been performing poorly for their standards in recent weeks. After a 13-6 start to their campaign, the defending WNBA champions went on a four-game skid before stringing wins over the Connecticut Sun and the Wings. The Liberty own a 19-10 record and are second in the WNBA behind the Minnesota Lynx, who have a comfortable 25-5 standing.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return to the outfield for the first time in nearly 2 years
NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton is nearing a return to the outfield for the first time in nearly two years, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday. Stanton has had his playing time limited while the Yankees have used slugger Aaron Judge as the designated hitter while working his way back from a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow. Stanton was not in the lineup for the third straight game on Friday as the Yankees opened a three-game series against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. Stanton could be back in the lineup soon. 'Good chance you could see it tomorrow,' Boone said Friday. Stanton has not played the outfield since September 14, 2023, at Boston. He last appeared in the outfield at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 9, 2023, against Milwaukee. Stanton started at DH for 32 games after missing the first 70 games of the season due to inflammation in the tendons of both elbows. His only appearance since Judge returned from his injury came as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning Tuesday, when he grounded into a double play. Stanton spent about 45 minutes Friday during batting practice fielding soft fly balls and grounders from third base coach Luis Rojas. Rojas hit fly balls to Stanton from near first and second base before finishing the session hitting fly balls from near the first base side of mound. 'He's always been a quality outfielder," Boone said. "Some range is going to be limited obviously, but I do feel like he'll make the plays that need to be made, Stanton was joined in the outfield by Judge, who began a throwing program Wednesday. Judge made soft throws from about 90 feet along with fielding fly balls and will continue building up before returning to the outfield. Since being acquired from the Marlins in Dec. 2017, Stanton has not played more than 72 games in the field and has played just 71 games as an outfielder since the start of the 2022 season. 'There's always risk when you go play the game,' Boone said. 'We wouldn't put him in a situation if we felt there was big time risk. That said, anything's possible, but I do feel like he's in a good place to do it on a limited basis and that's why we've kind of spent the week, 10 days, kind of ramping it up and seeing how he's doing with it, seeing how feels about it. 'He's usually very blunt and honest about if he feels he can do it or not. It's never risk-free, but I do feel like he should be in a position to handle it on a limited basis.' Stanton is hitting .268 with 10 homers and 28 RBIs in 37 games this season. He hit four homers in nine games during Judge's absence. Stanton has not played a full season since 2018, the first year after the Yankees acquired him from Miami. Before his season debut on June 16, he had missed 364 of 940 games since the beginning of the 2019 season. The 35-year-old appeared in 114 games last season, hitting .233 with 27 homers and 72 RBIs, then had seven homers in 14 postseason games and was voted the MVP of the AL Championship Series. Given a then-record $325 million, 13-year contract by the Marlins, Stanton had 59 homers and 132 RBIs in 2017, winning the NL MVP award. He was traded to the Yankees and had 38 homers and 100 RBIs in his first season in the Bronx. He missed time because of a strained right biceps and strained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee (2019), strained left hamstring (2020), strained left quadriceps (2021), right ankle inflammation and left Achilles tendinitis (2022) and strained left hamstring (2023 and 2024). ___ AP MLB:
