Allegra Stratton: Politics Gets Heated in the UK

Bloomberg13 hours ago

As Wimbledon gets going today, the championship organizers will be applying its Heat Rule: allowing players a ten minute break between sets two and three for women, and between sets three and four for men when the temperature crosses 30C. With such a hot start to the competition, the All England Lawn Tennis Club will also glad that it's plumped for AI over line judges this year — meaning there are fewer wilting human beings to worry about keeling over.
In fact, it's so hot that I see even a Middle Eastern news outlet ran a piece this morning on the heat in SW19.

Man United reject chance to sign former Premier League star Jhon Duran

Manchester United were reportedly offered the chance to sign Colombian striker Jhon Duran on loan but rejected the chance. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a striker and it was reported yesterday that they have made inquiries for Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins. Advertisement They also have been tracking Viktor Gyokeres all summer and maintain an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. One name that they weren't really linked to in the wider media is former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran who signed for Al Nassr in January of this year. Nonetheless, Fabrizio Romano revealed on his YouTube channel last night that the Red Devils were in fact offered the chance to sign the Colombian star this summer. The Italian journalist revealed, 'Man United were also offered the possibility to sign Jhon Duran from Al Nassr on an initial loan deal.' They were asked to cover his salary but 'Man United decided to turn down that possibility to focus on different targets.' Advertisement Romano claims that United have decided to prioritise different players and are now fully focused on 'advancing for Bryan Mbeumo.' It is perhaps surprising that United would have rejected the chance to sign such a young talent who has a proven record in the Premier League. The Colombian scored 12 goals in 29 appearances for Villa last season before moving to Saudi Arabia. The forward continued to bang in the goals in Saudi Arabia as he netted 12 in 18 appearances for Al Nassr. Romano has since reported that after United rejecting a loan deal, Duran's move to Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce is a 'here we go'. Advertisement He posted on X, 'Al Nassr let Durán leave on an initial loan with full salary covered until June 2026.' 'Durán has accepted Fenerbahce's proposal after director Devin Özek travelled to Colombia.' Follow us on Bluesky: @

Ferryhill Athletic FC was awarded £450 through Ferryhill Town Council's Members Initiative Fund, which supports community groups and projects. Advertisement Councillor Joe Quinn, who presented the cheque, said: "I am only too pleased to be able to support Ferryhill Athletic FC. "It is great to see the team playing back in Ferryhill at their old ground, and I would like to wish them every success for the future." The funding will be used to purchase tracksuits for the team, helping to create a stronger sense of identity for the players. Chris Orton and Paul Gillham accepted the cheque on behalf of the club. Ferryhill Athletic FC was originally formed in 1921 and played in both the Northern League and Wearside League for more than 60 years before folding in 2006. Advertisement The club was reformed 15 years later and now plays once again at Dean Bank Park, its historic home ground. The Members Initiative Fund was launched in April 2022 and has since contributed a total of £23,400 to various community projects. Funding is still available through the scheme.
