16 cadres arrested, explosive devices recovered in joint operations in Manipur

Army jawan swept away while trying to save friend
Dehradun: A 25-year-old Army personnel drowned in the Nandakini river in Chamoli while trying to save his friend who had fallen into the river while taking bath on Wednesday. Sunil Rawat, who was attached with the Army's Garhwal Rifles regiment and was currently posted in Punjab, had come home in Nandanagar in Chamoli district on leave for a religious event. Nandanagar SHO, Narendra Rawat, said, "Around 2pm, Rawat had gone for a bath with three friends from the same area at the confluence of Punera rivulet and Nandakini river. While bathing, one of his friends slipped and went deep into the water. To save him, Rawat jumped into the water. But sadly, he was swept into a whirlpool at the confluence and drowned. His three friends couldn't save him as there were large boulders in the river." He added that "the Army jawan's body was found by rescue teams stuck between boulders, under the water." "The body was sent to a nearby hospital for postmortem," he said.
