Why Eze isn't playing for Crystal Palace v Fredrikstad as Arsenal transfer looms

Eberechi Eze has been left out of Crystal Palace's matchday squad to face Fredrikstad, with a big-money transfer move to Arsenal looming. Tonight's Europa Conference League play-off clash had initially been billed as the last chance for Palace supporters to watch Eze in their colours when it appeared the midfielder was on his way to Tottenham. But that all changed late on Wednesday night as Arsenal hijacked Spurs' deal and overtook their bitter rivals as the frontrunners for Eze's signature – a stunning twist in one of this summer's most intriguing transfer sagas. The Gunners' dramatic 11th-hour bid to sign the England international progressed at a rapid pace before an agreement worth £60million – plus £7.5m in add-ons – was struck with Palace. In the terms of their deal with Palace, Tottenham had begrudgingly agreed to the prospect of Eze playing for one last time against Norwegian minnows Fredrikstad, despite the obvious risk of injury. But an impressive performance in Palace's goalless draw at Chelsea last weekend will now prove to be Eze's 169th and final appearance for the south London outfit. According to The Sun, it was agreed with Arsenal that Eze 'won't be taking any risks' by featuring against Fredrikstad, with the 27-year-old determined not to jeopardise or put his dream move to the Emirates in any doubt whatsoever. The Palace ✅ — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) August 21, 2025 Eze has been left out of Oliver Glasner's matchday squad altogether at Selhurst Park and Eagles supporters must now get used to life without their star man who, of course, scored the winner in their historic FA Cup triumph last season. Marc Guehi does, though, start and captains the side, despite ongoing discussions over a proposed switch to Liverpool before the transfer deadline. Eze, a versatile attacking midfielder-cum-winger, grew up supporting Arsenal and was released from the Gunners' academy at the age of 13, before making the grade in senior football with QPR. It's understood Tottenham's hierarchy have now set their sights of securing a deal for Aston Villa and England forward Morgan Rogers having given up all hope of landing Eze. Palace's opening encounter with Fredrikstad this evening – the first match of a two-legged play-off round – is the club's first-ever match in European competition. More Trending Glasner's men had initially been preparing to take part in this year's Europa League after upsetting Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the 2025 FA Cup final. But it was confirmed last month that the Eagles had been thrown out of Europe's second-tier competition and would instead be playing in Europa Conference League after breaching UEFA's multi-club ownership rules. Key Arsenal defender sidelined for several weeks

England captain Leah Williamson will miss the start of the new Women's Super League season due to a knee injury. The Arsenal defender sustained the problem during England's European Championship final triumph over Spain last month. She underwent a successful procedure last week to clean up swelling in her right knee and has begun rehabilitation. Williamson is expected to be out for several weeks, impacting Arsenal's opening WSL match on 6 September. This latest injury is not believed to be directly linked to a previous anterior cruciate ligament rupture in the same knee.

Hibs vs Legia Warsaw LIVE score and goal updates from Europa Conference League playoff

It took a dramatic 120 minutes for Hibs to see off FK Partizan in the last round. Now Legia Warsaw stand between David Gray' s men and the league phase of the Conference League. The Poles will be a step up in quality from the Serbians, having reached the quarter-finals of this competition last season. They were only knocked out by eventual winners Chelsea, and that was after beating them 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg. The Hibees will be confident having come through the previous two rounds, although will be hoping for a less frantic encounter than the one against Partizan ended up being. A routine 2-0 win over Livingston in the Premier Sports Cup at the weekend kept them ticking along nicely, with record signing Thibault Klidje getting off the mark. The visitors will be without one of their main men due to visa issues while Hibs will be hoping Kieron Bowie can produce more magic after a stunning strike the last time out on Conference League duty. We'll have all the action from Easter Road right here on the LIVE blog. 15:32Ross Pilcher McGinn is Mulligan's role model Josh Mulligan is delighted to be compared to John McGinn - but what the midfielder would love most is to join the former Hibs hero in the Scotland squad. Mulligan has hit the ground running at Easter Road since making his summer switch from Dundee. And the 22-year-old is hoping to create history with Hibs as they look to see off Legia Warsaw and reach the £5million Conference League proper. David Gray's side host the Poles in the playoff first leg tonight and Mulligan is desperate to build on his rich vein of form that has seen him likened to Scotland talisman and Aston Villa skipper McGinn. 15:30Ross Pilcher Shkurin not in Scotland Legia Warsaw have been hit with a major blow after their £1.5 million striker Ilya Shkurin failed to get a visa in time to play Hibs. Hibs face the Polish side in a play-off in the Europa Conference League as they attempt to play group stage European football for the first time. They face a Legia side who have had a traumatic build-up to the tie after crashing out of the Europa League to AEK Larnaca, losing to newly-promoted side Wisla Plock at the weekend and their manager Edi Iordanescu being linked with a move to the UAE. And their problems deepened when Belarus striker Shkurin stayed at home in Poland after Legia failed to secure a UK visa for him. Legia stated: "Ilya Shkurin has not travelled to Scotland due to his inability to obtain a visa to the UK for Belarusian citizens at such short notice." Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the UK government put in place a set of sanctions against Belarus and its citizens and securing a visa for entry, even for sports, can take several weeks. Legia splashed out £1.5 million from fellow Polish club Stal Mielec to land 26-year-old Shkurin in February and he's played in five Europa League ties already this season.
