Ahmedabad plane crash: Ex-Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani believed to be on Air India flight that crashed, says BJP leader
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was believed to be on board the London-bound Air India plane that crashed near the Ahmedabad airport soon after take-off on Thursday (June 12, 2025), a BJP leader said.
"Vijay Rupani was going to London by the Air India flight," said senior state BJP leader Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.
"I am going to the city civil hospital to inquire about him," Mr. Chudasama told reporters.

A London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area here minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. Many people were feared killed. There were 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals onboard the ill-fated Air India flight.

A video filmed by two British nationals at Ahmedabad airport captured the last known visuals of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, minutes before all of them were killed in a London-bound Air India plane crash on Thursday. A clip posted by London-based yoga coach Jamie Meek and his partner Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek shows them seated at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and sharing their experiences during the India visit, when the senior BJP leader passes by. Dressed in a navy-blue Nehru jacket, Rupani is seen talking over the phone as he walks through the departure lounge. The video, intended as a lighthearted farewell to India, was shared by the two Britons on Instagram just before they boarded the flight. "Goodbye India," Jamie said in the video. "We are at the airport, just boarding." The 68-year-old Former Chief Minister was en route to London to visit his wife and daughter. He was seated in 2D on Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which took off at 1:38 pm with 242 people on board. Moments after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into a residential wing of a medical college in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar area. It plummeted into a hostel block, smashing through the dining hall and subsequently going up in flames. Eyewitnesses near the crash site reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low. Rescue operations were swift but hampered by flames and dense smoke. Only one person survived. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu later confirmed Mr Rupani's death. Vijay Rupani, 68, served as Gujarat's 16th Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021. Born in Rangoon (now Yangon), Burma, in 1956, he and his family migrated to India during the political unrest in Southeast Asia and settled in Rajkot. He began his political journey as a student activist and steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a municipal corporator in 1987. Over the decades, Mr Rupani held various portfolios, including transport, water supply, and labour. He resigned as Chief Minister in 2021 as part of the BJP's leadership reshuffle ahead of state polls.

Israel's attack on Iran ‘totally unjustified': Omar Abdullah
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said Israel's attack on Iran was 'totally unjustified' as the Islamic Republic did not give any reason to the Jewish state to wage a war against it. 'As far as I know, Iran did not give any reason to Israel to carry out attacks on it. Israel, of its own will, waged war against the country, calling it a pre-emptive attack,' Abdullah told reporters in Srinagar. 'If world powers remain silent on Israel's aggression, it would be very unfortunate,' Abdullah said. Israel attacked Iran's capital Tehran early on Friday in strikes that targeted the country's nuclear programme and raised the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. It appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq. 'Today, Israel did what Russia did with Ukraine. You raise your voice against Russia, and a movement starts against Russia, but when Israel attacks Iran, the world powers -- be it the US, Europe, or any other country -- fall silent. If an attack by a country, such as Russia, on another is wrong, the attack by Israel on Iran is totally unjustified,' Abdullah said. The situation in the Middle East would escalate, and it would have an immediate impact on the world, the chief minister said. 'It has an impact on our fuel prices, on our stock market, and on the flights that fly to the West. But, more than that, it has an impact on the sentiments of the people,' he said. The chief minister also requested the ministry of external affairs to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students in Iran. 'Requesting @MEAIndia to urgently ensure the safety and well-being of Kashmiri students currently stuck in Iran. Their families are deeply worried, and we stand with them in this difficult time. Every step must be taken to safeguard our students,' Abdullah said on X. On Thursday's plane crash in Ahmedabad, which killed 241 of the 242 people on board an Air India flight to London, Abdullah called it an unfortunate incident and expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the families of all those who lost their loved ones, including the crew members. 'We hope the reasons behind the incident are known soon. We also hope such incidents do not happen in the future,' he said.
