US sides with Russia in UN resolutions on Ukraine

Saudi Gazette25-02-2025

NEW YORK — The US has twice sided with Russia in votes at the UN to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the Trump administration's change of stance on the war.First, the two countries opposed a European-drafted resolution condemning Moscow's actions and supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity, which was passed by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Then they backed a US-drafted resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an end to the conflict but containing no criticism of Russia. The Security Council resolution was passed but two key US allies, the UK and France, abstained in the vote after their attempts to amend the wording were vetoed. The competing resolutions were tabled as French President Emmanuel Macron visited President Donald Trump at the White House in an attempt to address their sharp differences over the war.On Thursday, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will likewise visit the new American leader.Trump's White House has upended the transatlantic alliance, currying favor with Moscow and casting doubt on America's long-term commitment to European security. That rift was laid bare on the floor of the 193-member UNGA on Monday as US diplomats pushed their limited resolution mourning the loss of life during the "Russia-Ukraine conflict" and calling for a swift end to it.European diplomats tabled a more detailed text, blaming Russia for its full-scale invasion, and supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity."We need to reconfirm that the aggression should be condemned and discredited, not rewarded," said Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa.UNGA members backed the European resolution by 93 votes but, extraordinarily, the US did not abstain but actually voted against it, along with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states, with 65 abstentions. The UNGA also passed the US resolution but only after it was amended to include language supporting Ukraine, which led to the US abstaining. At the much more powerful UN Security Council, which has 15 members, the unamended US resolution was passed by 10 votes, with the UK, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia abstaining.America's acting envoy to the UN, Dorothy Camille Shea, described the US resolution as a "simple historic statement... that looks forward, not backward. A resolution focused on one simple idea: ending the war".Rarely has the US been so at odds with its supposed European allies.Since Russia invaded Ukraine three years ago, the Security Council has been deadlocked by the power of Russia, one of its five permanent members, to veto any resolution there.
For this reason, the UNGA has been the main forum for debating the war but its resolutions are not legally binding for member states, unlike those of the Security Council. — BBC

Egypt's foreign minister discusses Iran nuclear negotiations, Gaza with US envoy

LONDON: Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's minister of foreign affairs, emphasized the need to persist in negotiations between the US and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program during a phone call with Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. Abdelatty said the negotiations are an important opportunity to achieve calm, avoid escalation, and prevent the region from sliding into greater instability, WAM, the Emirates News Agency, reported. Oman will host the sixth round of negotiations between Iran and the US on Sunday, Oman's foreign minister said on Thursday. Abdelatty and Witkoff, the US president's special envoy for the Middle East, on Thursday addressed Egyptian and US efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. They discussed the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, as well as the flow of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian coastal enclave, according to WAM. The Egyptian foreign minister highlighted the need for a lasting resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that meets the region's aspirations for peace and stability.

France's Macron praises Palestinian president's ‘genuine willingness' for peace

LONDON: France's President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday praised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' 'concrete and unprecedented commitments' after receiving a letter from the latter ahead of the UN-backed Saudi-French conference on a two-state solution in Palestine. In his letter on Monday, which was addressed to Macron and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Abbas outlined the main steps to be taken to end the war on Gaza. He called for the demilitarization of Hamas, the release of hostages, a ceasefire in Gaza and deployment of international forces to protect 'the Palestinian people,' while reaffirming his commitment to reforms and elections. Abbas also demanded an end to 'the occupation and conflict once and for all' and halting settler activities. In a post on X, Macron described the letter as 'a decisive moment, praising the Palestinian leader for charting 'a course toward a horizon of peace.' I received a letter of hope, courage, and clarity. The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, charts a course toward a horizon of peace. A condemnation of terrorism, the release of hostages, the demilitarization of Hamas, an end to the war in Gaza,… — Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) June 12, 2025 'Concrete and unprecedented commitments that demonstrate a genuine willingness to move forward,' said Macron. France and Saudi Arabia will co-chair the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in New York next week. The conference at the UN's headquarters aims to achieve concrete steps toward the two-state solution. In his letter, Abbas stressed the Palestinian Authority's commitment to presidential and general elections within a year across the Occupied Territories — including East Jerusalem — under international supervision. 'The Palestinian people are entitled to live in freedom and dignity in their homeland. Palestine and Israel are entitled to exist as states, in peace and security, in conformity with international law,' Abbas wrote in his letter. Reaffirming his commitment to the two-state solution, he said: 'We are ready to conclude within a clear and binding timeline, and with international support, supervision and guarantees, a peace agreement that ends the Israeli occupation and resolves all outstanding and final status issues.'

Protests Sweep US Over Immigration Policies

Protests against hardline immigration tactics erupted across the United States, following days of demonstrations in Los Angeles. California has prepared for a legal showdown over President Donald Trump's military deployment on Thursday. In Los Angeles, over 1,000 people gathered peacefully for the sixth consecutive day of protests. The crowd marched through the streets, expressing their discontent with the current administration's policies. Curfews and Vandalism in Los Angeles City leaders imposed a second night of curfew to address after-dark vandalism and looting. These incidents scarred several city blocks in the sprawling 500-square-mile metropolis. 'I would say for the most part everything is hunky dory right here at Ground Zero,' said protester Lynn Sturgis, 66, a retired school teacher. 'Our city is not at all on fire; it's not burning down, as our terrible leader is trying to tell you.' The mostly peaceful protests ignited due to a sudden escalation in efforts to apprehend undocumented migrants. Although pockets of violence occurred, including burning self-driving taxis and hurling stones at police, the Los Angeles Police Department managed the situation effectively. In Spokane, Washington, police declared a night curfew after arresting over 30 protesters. Police Chief Kevin Hall reported that officers fired pepper balls to disperse crowds during the unrest. Trump's Military Deployment and Political Maneuvering Trump won the election last year partly by promising to combat what he claims is an 'invasion' of undocumented migrants. He now seizes the opportunity to gain political capital by ordering the California National Guard's deployment. This marks the first time a U.S. president has taken such action in decades, despite Governor Gavin Newsom's objections. 'We're going to have a safe country,' Trump told reporters while attending a performance of 'Les Miserables' in Washington. 'We're not going to have what would have happened in Los Angeles. Remember, if I wasn't there… Los Angeles would have been burning to the ground.' Around 1,000 of the 4,700 troops deployed actively guard facilities and work alongside ICE agents. Scott Sherman, Deputy Commanding General Army North, leads these operations. The remaining troops, including 700 active-duty Marines, undergo training to handle civil disturbances. Financial Implications and Political Tensions The Pentagon announced that the deployment will cost taxpayers $134 million. Governor Newsom, a Democrat eyeing a potential 2028 presidential run, accused Trump of escalating the confrontation for political gain. He warned that this unprecedented militarization could extend beyond California's borders, claiming 'democracy is under assault right before our eyes.' On Thursday, California lawyers sought a court order to block troops from accompanying immigration officers during arrests. Trump administration lawyers dismissed this application as a 'crass political stunt.' Unyielding Protesters Across the Country Despite Trump's threats to deploy the National Guard to other Democratic-run states, protesters remained undeterred, with demonstrations occurred in St. Louis, Raleigh, Manhattan, Indianapolis, and Denver. In San Antonio, hundreds marched and chanted near city hall, where Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott deployed the state's National Guard. A nationwide 'No Kings' movement is planned for Saturday, coinciding with Trump's unusual military parade in the U.S. capital. The Trump administration portrays the protests as a violent threat to the nation, justifying military support for immigration agents and police. However, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass argued that Washington manufactured the crisis. 'A week ago, everything was peaceful in the city of Los Angeles,' she told reporters. 'Things began to be difficult on Friday when raids took place… that is the cause of the problems. This was provoked by the White House.' Short link : Post Views: 1
