Popular preacher arrested in Johor for unlicensed religious sermon, video sparks online debate
The arrest was carried out at 8.30pm by JAINJ's enforcement division, with assistance from the Seri Alam district police.
Following that, a two-minute and 58-second video of Mat Esa's arrest was widely circulated on social media.
Celebrity preacher Ustaz Abdullah Khairi shared the footage on his Facebook page, questioning the circumstances of the arrest and Mat Esa's subsequent detention in a lock-up.
JAINJ director Nasri Md Ali said the arrest was made under Section 11 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997 for teaching religion without a license or permit.
'I can confirm that the speaker is still under the department's investigation,' he said when contacted by the media today.
Nasri said checks revealed that the speaker in question is known to give talks to congregations and broadcasts the sessions live on social media.
'The house where he conducts his talks is the residence of another individual that is used as a place for religious talks on a daily basis after maghrib and subuh prayers.
'When the arrest was made, there were several people in the house where the live session were said to be broadcasted on Facebook and Youtube.
'However, checks showed that the speaker's latest video has since been deleted,' he said.
Nasri said the speaker's act of conducting sermons without a valid license or permit was among the complaints brought to the department's attention.
'We had prior instructions from JAINJ's licensing committee to take action on him,' he said.
Based on records, Nasri said the speaker was arrested by the department in 2016 for giving a sermon without valid accreditation.
He added that the same speaker was also investigated, but managed to flee from a JAINJ enforcement raid, during a sermon in 2020.
'This is the third time that the department has taken action on him for teaching or giving religious talks without a license or permit,' he said, adding that the requirement is similar to other states that also require the preachers or organisers to obtain a valid license or permit prior to giving their talks.

Town of Hempstead race features bestiality, porn, ex-NYPD cop
The election race to lead the most populous town in the US has gone down a perverted rabbit hole featuring bestiality, porn and a Marine veteran ex-NYPD cop. The campaign for Long Island's Town of Hempstead supervisor turned sickeningly X-rated when an old social-media post recently surfaced suggesting Democratic candidate Joseph Scianablo once boasted about looking at 'animal porn.' 'i just s—t myself while watchinG animal porn,' reads the Dec. 27, 2008, post on Scianablo's Facebook page. 4 Joseph Scianablo, the Democratic candidate for Town of Hempstead supervisor, came under fire after a bizarre Facebook post of his referencing 'animal porn' resurfaced. 4 A screenshot of Scianablo's post from 2008. While Scianablo is claiming his brother posed as him to post the twisted missive as a joke, the Dem's foe, interim Republican Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti, said he is still disgusted by the antics involving 'bestiality' and that the whole sordid ordeal makes his opponent unfit for office. 'This is not a joke. This is not a youthful mistake. This is a statement that celebrates the abuse and exploitation of animals—and it is beneath the dignity of any individual seeking public office,' Ferretti told The Post. Ferretti noted that the job of Hempstead Town supervisor involves the direct oversight of the Hempstead Animal Shelter, which is designed to rescue, protect and care for cats and dogs, many of which have already been victims of cruelty and neglect. 'The idea that someone who created a social media post to celebrate bestiality and publicly joked about it could be in charge of protecting animals is both sickening and unacceptable,' Ferretti said. 'We are not talking about politics—we're talking about basic decency, judgment, and humanity.' 4 Republican Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti said Scianablo's 'disgusting' Facebook post makes him unfit for office. Brigitte Stelzer Scianablo — a Marine combat veteran, retired NYPD officer and former prosecutor in the Queens District Attorney's Office — admitted that the post was written under his name but claimed he was the victim of a prank by his brother, Jason, at the time. 'I have a dopey brother who did this,' Scianablo told The Post on Sunday. 'My brother took my computer and posted it [the animal porn],' added the candidate, who was 31 at the time of the posting. He slammed Ferretti and the GOP for its 'desperate' mud-slinging in its bid for control of the town of nearly 800,000 residents. 'This is nothing but a smear,' Scianablo said. 'My record speaks for itself.' His campaign, in full damage-control mode, then provided a statement it says is from Jason fessing up to the prank. 'In 2008, I made a stupid, juvenile post on my brother's Facebook as a joke,' said the campaign statement attributed to Jason. 'My brother had returned from serving in combat as a US Marine in Iraq. For months, our family lived with the fear that we might lose him. When he came home, the relief was overwhelming, and I slipped back into being the kid brother who teased him instead of the man who should have been thanking him. 'My brother served four years as an NYPD officer, and he would later be seriously injured in the line of duty protecting victims of domestic violence. He has put his life on the line more times than I can count, for his fellow Marines, for the people of New York, and for complete strangers in danger. He has served with honor, courage, and commitment, and earned every role he has ever held through sacrifice and service.' Ferretti has meanwhile promoted his animal-rights record as a Nassau County legislator. He authored legislation that bans convicted animal abusers from owning pets and increased penalties for leaving animals in hot or freezing cars, while also cracking down on animal hoarders. 4 Scianablo blamed the post on his 'dopey' brother logging onto his computer. He sponsored another bill requiring owners of dogs deemed dangerous to notify neighbors within a 1,000-foot radius and to register those animals in a public safety database. 'This election is about who we can trust to do what's right. And clearly, Joe Scianablo is not that person,' Ferretti said. The race was already mired in controversy. Ferretti replaced Don Clavin, the three-term GOP town supervisor who stepped down before his term expired at year's end. Scianablo and other Democrats cried foul, saying it was a GOP power play to give Ferretti a leg up with the power of incumbency in the general election this fall.

Ohio State president Ted Carter named to NCAA Board of Governors
On Thursday, the NCAA announced some new appointees to its Board of Governors, and one of those names included was Ohio State president, Ted Carter. The board, though not nearly as powerful as before, is a collection of influential individuals who help shape the landscape of college sports. Carter was appointed as the 17th president of Ohio State by the OSU Board of Governors on August 22, 2023. Before that, he served in the same capacity at Nebraska. He is a former college athlete himself, having played ice hockey at Navy from 1977 to 1981, lettering all four years. Carter will serve a two-year stint on the Board of Governors. The appointment is a significant one, especially considering all the changes that we've seen in college athletics over the last few years. Having a voice from Ohio State involved in the room can't do anything but help. MAGA Voter Regrets Vote Due To Rising Medication Prices
A Facebook post written by a self-proclaimed MAGA voter who says she and her partner can no longer afford their imported medications due to Donald Trump's tariffs is going viral. At the start of the post, the MAGA voter expressed her anger with President Trump and his ongoing tariff war that has increased the prices of imported goods in the US. She said, "He should take his tariffs and shove them up his ass!" She then broke down the cost of her and her partner's medications in the US, which amounts to over $500 for each of them with Medicare. She said they'd been buying their medications from Canada or the UK to save money.... But that changed when the Canadian company purportedly increased its prices by $80-100 per month to offset Trump's tariffs. "I voted for Trump, I truly wish I had not making America Great Again, but he sure is making it more expensive," she wrote. In response to the posts, people had a range of opinions, with some defending President Trump... "You can't blame the president for the high drug pricing," one person commented on the original post. "It is not Trumps fault you cannot figure this out," another wrote. While others blamed the original poster for her voting decisions... "If you cannot afford your medications, why would you vote for any Republican ever??? The Democratic platform has been lowered costs for healthcare FOR DECADES," one user questioned. "I wish I had more sympathy. That went away in Nov. They are getting exactly what they voted told them this time was different," another person wrote. What are your thoughts?
