Aussie fishermen stunned by behaviour of massive great white shark as 'special' moment captured
Three Aussie fishermen had the "experience of a lifetime" while competing in the country's largest game fishing tournament over the weekend when they got up close and personal with a seriously inquisitive Great White shark.
Skipper John Smith and his crew were fishing for marlins and other species of sharks off the coast of Port Stephens, NSW, when they began to live out a real-life scene from the classic move Jaws, as a large fin emerged from the water and headed straight for them.
"They were drifting along about 30 nautical miles down and saw the fin. They had been fishing for Tiger sharks but they had a Great White turn up... it started eating their burley bag in the water," Troy Radford, President of Newcastle & Port Stephens Game Fish Club and host of the national tournament, told Yahoo News.
A burley bag, filled with fish bait, creates a scent in the water that attracts sharks and it certainly did the trick on Saturday as the fishermen encountered two more Great Whites while on the water. And despite the pictured shark being almost the same size as the men's boat, one of the others was even bigger.
"The shark in the pictures was well over five metres long and their boat was only five and a half metres," Troy told Yahoo.
The fishermen, aged in their late 40s and early 50s representing the Lake Macquarie Game Fish Club, have been fishing for most of their lives and told Troy they were "excited and pretty chuffed" to encounter the massive Great White sharks in the water.
Photos show one of the sharks up close and personal, with a fisherman even getting a chance to touch it. After following them for some time it eventually disappeared.
"He came up and he's actually chewed on the corner of the boat, pulling the boat down. The boys were patting him on the head," the club president said. "They actually said that they didn't win a prize [at the tournament] but they feel like the real winners to experience something like that...it's pretty special. It's an experience of a lifetime."

🎣 Fishermen catch fish 'rarely seen' in Aussie waters
Remarking about the incredible scene, fishing veteran John Smith told the ABC the famous predator was "pretty much playing like a Labrador pup".
Great White sharks are a protected species in Australia and catching them is strictly prohibited, with fines of up to $55,000 and one year imprisonment for those who do.
There were 700 anglers completing over the weekend in the Port Stephens waters and much of the area will soon fall under the state government's proposed new offshore wind farm where fishing will be banned. However, the move has received considerable pushback, most notably from Opposition Leader Peter Dutton who said he would reverse the plan if he gets into power later this year.
There has also been pushback against the proposal from the game fishing community, with Troy saying fishermen "mostly tag and release" fish and creating the offshore wind farm would be "devastating for marine life" in the area.
"The fishermen seeing the sharks highlights how healthy that ecosystem out there must be to sustain three big, Great Whites swimming around," he said.
However there is hope the 1,800 square kilometre farm which will span from Port Stephens to Swansea will help boost the country's renewable energy supply and create more jobs in the area.
"It will create a lot of jobs in the Hunter [region], which is an area undergoing strong economic change with the move away from coal-fired power stations," Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen previously said.

Mitchell Starc goes public with sad news after difficult decision with wife
Mitchell Starc has admitted he's realistic that his career in the prestigious IPL might be over after flying home early from the tournament with wife Alyssa Healy last month. Starc and Healy were among dozens of Aussies who flew home from India when the IPL was suspended in May due to tensions with neighbouring Pakistan. The T20 tournament eventually resumed, but Starc and fellow Aussie Jake Fraser-McGurk chose not to return for the Delhi Capitals. Healy, who was in India supporting her husband, later revealed harrowing details of the situation, which saw a game in Dharamshala abandoned mid-match because of air strikes nearby. Speaking for the first time since deciding not to return to India, Starc said on Friday he's at peace with the fact he might never play in the IPL again. IPL franchises aren't known to react well when players leave the tournament early or withdraw. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc told , revealing he'd expressed concerns about going ahead with the game in Dharamshala before it had to be abandoned. 'That's why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here (to Lord's for the World Test Championship final). Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision." Starc also confirmed that he pulled out of the recent Champions Trophy ODI tournament due to concerns he held about playing in Pakistan. Whether IPL franchises will be willing to offer him contracts in the future remains to be seen, but the 35-year-old has shown in the past he doesn't really care for the riches on offer in T20 leagues. Starc has famously missed out on around $10 million throughout his career by prioritising family time with wife Alyssa and keeping his body fresh to play for Australia, rather than playing in the IPL. But he was quick to point out on Friday that he's always given 100 per cent to IPL franchises he's played for. 'These are different circumstances," he said. 'It was more a question of not having enough information leading into making a decision [about] things of that degree. I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward.' RELATED: Cricket world stunned as rival joins Glenn Maxwell in immediate exit Marnus Labuschagne cops brutal new blow amid calls for Test axing Healy had previously opened up the scary situation that unfolded in Dharamshala, in northern India near the Pakistan border. 'It was a surreal experience," she said on the 'Willow Talk' podcast. "All of a sudden a couple of the light towers went out and we were just sitting there up the top waiting … we're a large group of family and extra support staff. And the next minute the guy who wrangles the group of us and gets us on the bus came up and his face was white. He was like, 'we need to go right now'. 'Then (another) guy came out and his face was white and he grabbed one of the children and said, 'we need to leave right now.' We were like, 'what's going on?' We weren't told anything. We had no idea. 'I said to Mitch, 'what's going on?' He said the town 60km away had just been smacked by some of the missiles so there was a complete blackout in the area. That's why the lights were off because the Dharamshala stadium was like a beacon at that point in time. All of a sudden we're crammed into vans and off we go back to the hotel. There was madness.' Healy said they took a five-and-a-half-hour bus ride and six-hour train trip the following day back to Delhi, which took them uncomfortably close to the Pakistan border. 'There was a lot of anxiety around the Australian group because we didn't have a whole heap of information as to what was going on," she added. "That's probably been the really interesting and probably the scariest part of this whole situation is the misinformation."

'Absolutely bonkers': Football world in uproar over Ange Postecoglou 'disgrace'
English football legend Alan Shearer has led the condemnation of Tottenham's decision to sack Aussie manager Ange Postecoglou, just days after he won the Europa League. Postecoglou's two-year reign at Tottenham was ended on Friday night when he was brutally sacked by the North London club. The decision was made despite Postecoglou guiding Spurs to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao last month - the club's first trophy in 17 years. Unfortunately it was a very different story in the Premier League, with Spurs narrowly avoiding relegation in 17th place after losing 22 of 38 games. The dismal league campaign ultimately cost Postecoglou his job. "Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties," Spurs said in a statement. "We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. "We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future — he will always be welcome back at our home." Postecoglou responded with a statement of his own, sharing his pride at what he achieved. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime," he said. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid foundations that mean this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them." The football world has been left heavily divided on Postecoglou's sacking, especially after guiding Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years. Many pointed out the league results simply weren't good enough, while others felt the Europa League triumph should have saved him. Shearer, the former England and Newcastle striker, posted on social media: "What a stupid game football is!!!!" Chris Sutton, another former England forward, said: "To get someone in who wins them silverware, then straightaway get rid of him, that sums up modern football, doesn't it? It's absolute bonkers." Spurs fullback Pedro Porro wrote on Instagram: "Thank you for everything, boss. For mentoring me early on, helping me settle into the club, and trusting me out on the pitch. I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows. Above everything, you gave us one of the greatest moments in the club's history and for that, you'll always be celebrated. Wishing you all the very best, boss." RELATED: Fans all make same complaint as Socceroos all-but seal World Cup Mary Fowler dream could be ruined amid news about Nathan Cleary England manager Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by Chelsea a year after winning the Champions League in 2021, said: "It just shows you that it is not only about titles, you can survive seasons without titles if your connection, the support and the belief and the trust between the coach and the club is strong then you can overcome seasons without titles. If there is slight disbelief, if there are concerns, if the trust is not there anymore, obviously then it is sometimes not even enough to win a trophy after so many years." Spurs fans took to social media with an array of reactions. Many labelled it a "disgrace" and "unfair" to sack Postecoglou so soon after delivering the club some silverware. My gaffer. This happened because of you. Disgrace how he's been treated. Says a lot more about the priorities of this Business Club running the circus. #ThankYouAnge #LevyOut — COYS, Big Ange (@Scott_Sweeney) June 6, 2025 You dared and you did. Ange, I had my doubts but got you proved everyone wrong. I couldn't be more grateful for that night in Bilbao. I will forever remember that night thanks to you. Such a disgrace. Thank you Ange Postecoglou (Big Ange) 🇦🇺🏆#Ange #LevyOut — Masen-07 🏴⚽️ (@MasenTHFC07) June 6, 2025 Ange will always be a legend. Sadly 22 league defeats is unacceptable though. — Ongar Spurs (@OngarSpurs) June 6, 2025 Ange being sacked is an absolute disgrace — Craig (@ftblCraig) June 6, 2025 So true !What they did to Ange was very bad.I hope @spurs gets relegated to championship!Very unfair — C S Praneeth (@cspraneeth) June 6, 2025

Liverpool set to miss out on transfer target as AC Milan plots move
AC Milan is plotting a move for Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, who Liverpool is also believed to be interested in. Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea are all said to be interested in Kim to varying degrees, but a move back to Italy could be the most attractive proposition for the 28-year-old, who enjoyed the best season of his career in 2022-23 with Napoli. Advertisement Bayern has already agreed a deal to sign center-back Jonathan Tah, who was also linked with Liverpool, from Bayer Leverkusen, freeing up Kim to leave the Bundesliga club. Speaking of Leverkusen, Liverpool is trying to sign Florian Wirtz this summer, although doubts have been raised about the 22-year-old playmaker. READ MORE: Andy Robertson makes Man Utd dig as Liverpool left-back hails Napoli 'king' Scott McTominay READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez latest Kim joined Bayern from Napoli two years ago, but the Bavarian club is already willing to let him leave. Milan is looking to freshen up its defense after finishing in eighth place in Serie A this season, and Kim is expected to be available for $41 million. Advertisement It's not clear just how much truth there is to the reports linking Kim with Liverpool. Considering the player turns 29 this year, it seems unlikely that the Reds would be willing to part with over $40 million to sign him, as the club tends to target players in their mid- to low-20s. Meanwhile, Liverpool is reportedly interested in 19-year-old Rennes center-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, as the club continues to consider its defensive options ahead of next season. While Virgil van Dijk is staying put for another two years, there is uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future ahead of the expiration of his contract next year, while Joe Gomez is coming back from hamstring surgery and Jarell Quansah has just experienced a regressive campaign. The Reds were interested in Dean Huijsen, but he plumped for Real Madrid, and a link has now emerged with another young defender in Ait Boudlal. There is also interest in Ait Boudlal from other clubs in France as well as two clubs in Spain. Advertisement The 6-foot-3 Marrakesh-born defender developed at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in his home country of Morocco, before signing his first professional contract with French club Rennes in July 2024. Ait Boudlal made six appearances for Rennes' second team, and also turned out for the Under-19s on a couple of occasions during the first half of the 2024-25 season. In February, he was sent on loan to French second tier side Amiens for the remainder of the campaign, and went on to make nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Le360 Sport reports that Ait Boudlal is noted for "his ability to pass, his defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age."
