Tom Pidcock hits 95km/h in breathtaking descent video

Tom Pidcock, Britain's Olympic mountain bike champion and Tour de France stage winner, has once again showcased his elite descending skills – this time reaching speeds of up to 95km/h down the Rossfeld Panorama mountain pass, which straddles the Austria-Germany border.
In a video, the 25-year-old is filmed tackling the 6km descent by Austria's former Dakar Rally bikes champion Matthias Walkner, who follows on a motorbike equipped with cameras.
Pidcock uses the controversial 'supertuck' position – lying on the top tube of his bike for aerodynamic advantage – which was banned in professional races by the UCI in 2021, but remains legal in non-competitive settings.
Despite the aerodynamic posture, Pidcock was seen pedalling hard and riding out of the saddle at moments, reportedly producing over 800 watts of power.
At the base of the descent, Walkner is seen applauding Pidcock's performance before towing the Q.365 rider back up the mountain road.
Pidcock's skill as a descender has earned him global acclaim.
During his debut Tour de France in 2022, he famously blitzed down the Col du Galibier and Col de la Croix de Fer, touching speeds over 100km/h en route to a dramatic stage win atop Alpe d'Huez.
In 2023, he featured in a now-viral video by cycling filmmaker Safa Brian, descending Tuna Canyon in Los Angeles.
That clip has racked up over 2.7 million views, further cementing his reputation as one of the most fearless and skilled descenders in cycling.
Q36.5 is bankrolled by Johannesburg-born billionaire Ivan Glasenberg, while the team manager is South African Doug Ryder.
At the time of publishing, Glasenberg is the 324th-richest man in the world with a net worth of $9.3 billion according to Forbes.
Glasenberg, 68, is a former chief executive officer of Glencore, the world's largest commodity trading and mining companies.
He was the company's CEO from 2002 to 2021.
He is married with two children, and a resident of the village of Rüschlikon in Switzerland.
Glasenberg paid 360 million Swiss francs (R7.4 billion) in taxes to Rüschlikon following Glencore's flotation on the London Stock Exchange.
The money enabled the residents to cut their taxation rate by 7%, which was approved by large majority after a public vote.
Glasenberg became a Swiss citizen in 2011.
He was a champion race-walker for both South Africa and Israel.

SA markets under pressure as geopolitical tensions escalate and US Fed signals caution

Johannesburg Stock Exchange JSE The rand fell 0.6% to R18.12 against the US dollar during early morning trade but still remained above the R18-mark by late afternoon while the JSE All Share Index eased by 0.2% to 94 785 points. Image: Gianluigi Guercia / AFP South African markets traded on the backfoot on Thursday on the back of geopolitical risks arising from the war in the Middle East and the US Federal Reserve (Fed) revised down its growth forecasts for the US. The rand fell 0.6% to R18.12 against the US dollar during early morning trade but still remained above the R18-mark by late afternoon while the JSE All Share Index eased by 0.2% to 94 785 points. The markets have remained on edge across the world as the war between Israel and Iran has intensified, pushing global oil prices to their highest in four months. An Iranian missile barrage left at least 240 people wounded as they struck several sites across Israel, damaging a hospital in the country's south while targeting a military site. Israel also attacked Iran's Arak heavy water nuclear reactor as the two countries traded fire for a seventh consecutive day. The war in the Middle East saw the Brent crude oil price rising 1.7% above $78 per barrel on Thursday as the main concern for the oil market remains the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for a fifth of global crude. Oil prices are now trading nearly 9% higher since Israel's initial strikes on Iran, with energy markets increasingly pricing in the chance of deeper supply disruptions. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Adding to tensions, senior US officials are reportedly preparing for a possible strike on Iran in the coming days, signaling Washington's readiness to enter the conflict. However, mixed signals remain, as the White House has given little indication of whether the US would support strikes on Tehran's nuclear facilities. Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group - an independent financial advisory and asset management firm - said global financial markets were likely to suffer a rapid and sharp selloff if the US launches direct military strikes against Iran. Green said a direct US military intervention could push crude significantly higher, especially if key infrastructure or shipping lanes are affected. 'The world economy is not in a strong position to absorb another energy shock,' Green said. 'If oil spikes from here, inflation expectations will shift, interest rate cut expectations will fade, and that would create a double blow for equities already priced for perfection.' Separately, the US Fed on Wednesday kept interest rates unchanged at 4.25%–4.50% for a fourth consecutive meeting but signaled two possible cuts by year-end. However, the Fed trimmed one cut for both 2026 and 2027, with the bank raising its inflation outlook and lowering its growth forecast. It comes as policymakers take a cautious stance to fully evaluate the economic impact of US President Donald Trump's policies, particularly those related to tariffs, immigration, and taxation. The Fed noted that the increases in tariffs this year are likely to push up prices and weigh on economic activity, adding that the effects on inflation could be short-lived—reflecting a one-time shift in the price level— and could instead be more persistent. It said the effects of tariffs will depend, among other things, on their ultimate level. Expectations of that level, and thus of the related economic effects, reached a peak in April and have since declined.

Land Bank launches Wine and Spirits Fund to boost transformation in industry

The Land Bank has launched a Wine and Spirits Fund aimed at accelerating transformation in the country's wine and spirits sector, in a partnership backed by the European Union and the South African government. Image: Supplied The Land Bank has launched a Wine and Spirits Fund aimed at accelerating transformation in the country's wine and spirits sector, in a partnership backed by the European Union and the South African government. The initiative forms part of a broader support programme, under Financing Agreement No. ZA/DCI-AFS/040-854, designed to increase the participation of Black-owned businesses in the wine and spirits value chain and enhance global market access for South African products, it said in a statement on Thursday. South Africa, ranked seventh among the world's top wine-producing countries, produced nearly 934 million litres of wine in 2023. The sector contributes an estimated R56.5 billion to gross domestic product. The programme is divided into two components: a R195 million transformation component, managed by Land Bank, and a R98 million marketing and distribution component, led by the National Agricultural Marketing Council. The transformation component will focus on improving access to land, infrastructure, education, and financial resources for Black-owned enterprises. Land Bank CEO Themba Rikhotso said, 'South Africa is recognised as one of the leading countries in the production of wine, which is exported throughout the world. Land Bank is delighted by the support of the EU. It will drive a transformation agenda in the wine and spirits sector, which has historically not been fully inclusive in its production value chain.' Applications for the fund open on June 19, 2025. Qualifying applicants must be Black-owned and managed enterprises within the wine and spirits industry. Nasreddine Nabi leads Chiefs into pre-season with Dutch tour

Nasreddine Nabi and Kaizer Chiefs will officially return for pre-season training on Friday, 20 June, as per FARPost. As they build on the 2025/2026 campaign following their Nedbank Cup triumph. Nabi's continued presence at the helm puts an end to recent speculation about his future. The Tunisian tactician, who steered the club to silverware for the first time in a decade by defeating Orlando Pirates in the 2025 Nedbank Cup final, remains firmly in charge. Kaizer Chiefs' victory in the Nedbank Cup not only restored pride at Naturena but also fulfilled one of Nabi's major mandates, ending the club's long-standing trophy drought. The triumph came despite a disappointing league finish that saw Chiefs miss out on the top eight. However, they still secured qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup, offering a vital continental platform for the new season. Nabi's technical team will oversee the first training session at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena. Players will begin with medical assessments, before shifting focus to fitness work and tactical drills. While most of the squad will return on Friday, a few players are expected to join on Monday. Amakhosi have announced a European pre-season tour, with a camp scheduled in the Netherlands from 3 to 19 July. While Chiefs have yet to reveal their match schedule during the trip, the overseas stint signals their ambition to sharpen up against European opposition. The club has officially parted ways with Sabelo Radebe, Ranga Chivaviro, Edmilson Dove, and Njabulo Blom. Blom returns to St. Louis City SC in Major League Soccer following the expiry of his loan deal. Several more departures look imminent. Mduduzi Mdantsane, Fiacre Ntwari, George Matlou, and Edson Castillo are all reportedly on the verge of leaving Naturena, as Chiefs clear space for fresh talent. While the club has not formally announced any new signings. A source revealed that former Orlando Pirates defenders Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako have joined Kaizer Chiefs.
