A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, whose half-naked and mutilated body was discovered on a field in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, at the beginning of June.
The teenager disappeared on 31 May in Braamfischerville, only to be found lifeless by a passerby the following day.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the suspect was taken in for questioning on Monday and was subsequently linked to the teenager's murder.
He was formally charged with murder on Tuesday.
'The suspect is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 11 June 2025. The police's Occult Unit has been working diligently to find the perpetrators following the gruesome murder of the 14-year-old,' added Masondo.
Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo previously suggested Likhona could have been targeted because of her sexuality or for muthi-related reasons.
Masondo said more arrests could not be ruled out.

Trial date set for teenagers charged with murder at seaside resort

A trial date has been set for three teenagers who are charged with the murder of a man at a seaside resort. Kent Police were called to the Warden Bay Road area of Leysdown-on-Sea, on the Isle of Sheppey, shortly after 7pm on Sunday, after an altercation involving a small number of people. Alexander Cashford, 49, was confirmed dead at the scene, and police said multiple injuries to his body were reported. A 16-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 15, all from London and thought to have been on holiday in Kent at the time of the attack, were charged with murder on Tuesday. On Thursday, a provisional trial date was set at Maidstone Crown Court for January 13 next year. The three are jointly charged with murder after a 'violent assault' took place near the beach in Warden Bay. The defendants, two of whom appeared separately in court on Thursday and spoke only to confirm their names, were accompanied in court by their parents and other family members. The 15-year-old boy is due to appear later. The attack is alleged to have involved a glass bottle and rocks being thrown, the court heard. On Thursday, the prosecution said the cause of Mr Cashford death is currently inconclusive as he seems to have suffered a 'medical episode such as a cardiac arrest could have been brought on by being chased and attacked'. A 12-year-old girl, arrested on Tuesday in Basildon, Essex, has been bailed. The 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been remanded into youth detention accommodation. A plea and trial preparation date has been set for November 6.

Jury convicts Burnsville man who police say confessed to dismembering mother after spending her money

A Twin Cities man who authorities said admitted to killing and dismembering his mother after spending all of her money is guilty of murder, a jury found Wednesday. The jury convicted 58-year-old Troy Mitteness of first- and second-degree murder after seven days of trial and nine hours of deliberation, according to the Dakota County Attorney's Office. Authorities in Burnsville, Minnesota, were investigating Troy Mitteness for alleged mail theft in June 2023 when they discovered discrepancies in what he said about the whereabouts of his mother, Sandra Mitteness. They later found blood inside his home. According to a criminal complaint, Troy Mitteness admitted to police he killed his mother "because he had spent all her money, and she was becoming suspicious and wanted to see her finances." He also confessed to dismembering and discarding her body, the complaint said. Troy Mitteness is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday.

Sergeant Mtshweni murder: 2 suspects killed in shootout, one kills himself as cops close in

As the SA Police and Royal Eswatini Police Services were about to arrest three men in connection with the recent murder of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, one shot himself and the other two were killed in a shootout. Mtshweni was killed in a robbery involving seven heavily armed suspects at a store in Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, on 8 August. The following day, police made a breakthrough, according to national police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, with the arrest of one person on 9 August in South Africa. Further intelligence pointed to the involvement of two men in Eswatini, who were traced to the Sishweleni region, according to the Royal Eswatini Police Service. 'When they noticed the police, they opened fire on them, and the Eswatini royal police returned fire, fatally killing the two suspects,' Mathe said. A third man was found at his parental home in Mantambe, Shiselweni, where he reportedly used a gun to kill himself before he could be arrested. READ | SAPS hunt cop killers after 3 officers fatally shot in the line of duty National police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, thanked Eswatini commissioner of police Vusie Masango, and the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force for their collaboration. 'On behalf of all the men and women in blue and the family of Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni, we would like to thank the Royal Eswatini Police, led by Commissioner Masango, as well as the role played by the Umbutfo Defence Force in assisting our Mpumalanga police to trace these police killers,' Masemola said. He added that the partnership was crucial in combating the murder of police officers. The top cop said: The attacks and killing of our police officers is a concern, and we request our communities to assist us in putting a stop to these killings. 'We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' Masemola said. This comes as a search is under way for Jabulani Moyo, who is accused of killing two police detectives who were transporting him back to the Boksburg correctional facility after appearing in court in Roodepoort. Police have offered a reward of R150 000 for information leading to his arrest. Six police officers have been killed in the line of duty since April.
