LA Tenants Union calls for eviction moratorium amid mass immigration enforcement operations
The Los Angeles Tenants Union is calling on city officials to impose a rent moratorium as ongoing immigration enforcement operations continue to spread fear throughout the region.
During a news conference on Tuesday, representatives of the LATU claimed that the presence of officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement has had a noticeable impact on business, as many employees are scared to go to work while operations continue.
Many self-employed immigrants have decided to stay home amid the ongoing situation, choosing to pass on much-needed money in favor of avoiding federal agents.
"We know that many tenants will not be able to pay their rent come July 1," said one LATU representative, who said she's undocumented. "Why? Because this militarization of our community ... has closed down businesses, taken away street vendors, separated families and then people cannot pay their rent. They have barely the minimum to survive."
The concern comes as the Trump administration cracks down on unauthorized immigration throughout the country, with much of the initial enforcement coming out of L.A. County. According to an exclusive report by CBS News on Tuesday, internal government data shows that as many as 59,000 detainees are currently being held throughout the nation, a likely record.
President Trump has defended the action, claiming that leaders in cities run by Democrats use undocumented immigrants to "expand their Voter Base, cheat in Elections, and grow the Welfare State, robbing good paying Jobs and Benefits from Hardworking American Citizens," he wrote on Truth Social. The administration has not provided evidence to support those claims.
Last week, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved an emergency motion to measure and study the economic impact of immigration enforcement throughout the remainder of the year. Local politicians said the study will include information on workforce losses, locations and industries affected, and on the economic impact of property damage and imposed curfews.
Some business owners reported receiving as little as 20 percent of their normal business in recent weeks, especially in areas that rely on foot traffic like the Fashion District and Little Tokyo.
"Our businesses are struggling. Entrepreneurship is at a standstill," said a man who only identified himself as a "concerned community member." "Fear has taken a toll on our society and our local economy."
The union called for a citywide day of action on July 1, where it encouraged community members to join in a rent strike and participate in an action to call on city officials to impose a moratorium on evictions.
The office for L.A. Mayor Bass did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On May 22, the USDA, in its biannual report, projected that global 2025/26 sugar production would increase by +4.7% year-over-year (y/y) to a record 189.318 million metric tons (MMT), with a global sugar surplus of 41.188 MMT, up 7.5% year-over-year. The outlook for higher sugar production in India, the world's second-largest producer, is bearish for prices. On June 2, India's National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories projected that India's 2025/26 sugar production would climb +19% y/y to 35 MMT, citing larger planted cane acreage. The outlook for abundant rainfall in India could lead to a bumper sugar crop, which is bearish for prices. On April 15, India's Ministry of Earth Sciences projected an above-normal monsoon this year, with total rainfall forecast to be 105% of the long-term average. India's monsoon season runs from June through September. Signs of larger global sugar output are negative for prices. On May 22, the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) predicted that Brazil's 2025/26 sugar production would rise +2.3% y/y to a record 44.7 MMT. Also, India's 2025/26 sugar production is projected to rise +25% y/y to 35.3 MMT, citing favorable monsoon rains and increased sugar acreage. In addition, Thailand's 2025/26 sugar production is expected to climb +2% y/y to 10.3 MMT. In a bearish factor, the Indian government said on January 20 that it would allow its sugar mills to export 1 MMT of sugar this season, easing the restrictions placed on sugar exports in 2023. India has restricted sugar exports since October 2023 to maintain adequate domestic supplies. India allowed mills to export only 6.1 MMT of sugar during the 2022/23 season to September 30 after allowing exports of a record 11.1 MMT in the previous season. However, the ISMA projects that India's 2024/25 sugar production will fall -17.5% y/y to a 5-year low of 26.2 MMT. Also, the ISMA reported last Monday that India's sugar production from Oct 1-May 15 was 25.74 MMT, down -17% from the same period last year. In addition, Indian Food Secretary Chopra said on May 1 that India's 2024/25 sugar exports may only total 800,000 MT, below earlier expectations of 1 MMT. The outlook for higher sugar production in Thailand is bearish for sugar prices. On May 2, Thailand's Office of the Cane and Sugar Board reported that Thailand's 2024/25 sugar production rose +14% y/y to 10.00 MMT. Thailand is the world's third-largest sugar producer and the second-largest exporter of sugar. A positive factor for sugar prices is the expected increase in sugar imports from Pakistan, following the Pakistani government's announcement last Friday that it plans to import 250,000 metric tons of raw sugar due to a disappointing sugarcane harvest. Sugar prices have some support from reduced sugar production in Brazil. Unica reported last Monday that cumulative 2025/26 Brazil Center-South sugar output through May is down by -11.6% y/y to 6.954 MMT. Last month, Conab, Brazil's government crop forecasting agency, said 2024/25 Brazil sugar production fell -3.4% y/y to 44.118 MMT, citing lower sugarcane yields due to drought and excessive heat. The International Sugar Organization (ISO) raised its 2024/25 global sugar deficit forecast to a 9-year high of -5.47 MMT on May 15, up from a February forecast of -4.88 MMT. This indicates a tightening market following the 2023/24 global sugar surplus of 1.31 MMT. ISO also cut its 2024/25 global sugar production forecast to 174.8 MMT from a February forecast of 175.5 MMT. The USDA, in its bi-annual report released May 22, projected that global 2025/26 sugar production would climb +4.7% y/y to a record 189.318 MMT and that global 2025/26 human sugar consumption would increase +1.4% y/y to a record 177.921 MMT. Andrew Cuomo congratulates Zohran Mamdani, says "he won" NYC Democratic mayoral primary
Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani to congratulate him Tuesday night, saying "he won" the New York City Democratic mayoral primary election. With 91% of the vote in, Mamdani had 43.5% and Cuomo had 36.4% of the vote. Because Mamdani does not have the 50% required to win the primary, however, there's still no official winner and there will be additional rounds of ranked-choice voting. "He deserved it. He won." Cuomo spoke to his supporters shortly before 10:30 p.m., saying it was "not our night." "Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night, and he put together a great campaign, and he touched young people and he inspired them and moved them, and got them to come out and vote," Cuomo said. "And he really ran a highly impactful campaign. I called him. I congratulated him. I applaud him sincerely for his effort." He added, "He deserved it. He won." A spokesperson for Cuomo said while the former governor congratulated Mamdani, he has not officially conceded. "I want to look at all the numbers as they come in and analyze the rank choice voting. I will then consult with my colleagues on what is the best path for me to help the City of New York, as I have already qualified to run for mayor on an independent line in November," Cuomo said in a statement. In the weeks leading up to the election, polls showed the primary narrowed down to a two-man contest between Cuomo and Mamdani, with one poll showing Mamdani taking the lead the day before the election. The former governor of New York was hoping his long resume of public service will outweigh the scandals that ended his governorship, while Mamdani started off relatively unknown but quickly gained popularity with a campaign focused on improving the cost of living. NYC's Democratic mayoral primary moves into ranked choice voting rounds Under ranked-choice voting, whichever candidate has the fewest votes at the end of each round of tabulating is eliminated from contention. Those ballots' subsequent choices are tabulated in the next round. Additional rounds of counting continue until a candidate reaches 50% of the vote. This is only the second time New York City has used ranked-choice voting. The system allows voters to list up to five candidates on their ballots in order of preference. CBS News estimates a total turnout of 1.1 million voters, most of whom turned out in person Tuesday.
