Appeal lodged in Lebanon over leniency of sentences in Seán Rooney killing
A formal appeal over the leniency of the sentences of those indicted for the murder of Private Seán Rooney has been lodged, the Tánaiste has said. Pte Rooney (24), from Newtowncunningham in Co Donegal, was killed when a convoy of Irish troops serving with a UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon was ambushed and fired upon on December 14th, 2022. Advertisement The shooting happened near the town of Al-Aqbiya in a stronghold of Hezbollah. Pte Rooney was from the 121 Infantry Battalion of the Defence Forces. The main person convicted for his killing is still at large and the Irish Government has described some of the sentences imposed on others over the matter as unduly lenient. On Tuesday, Tánaiste Simon Harris said prosecutors in Lebanon have formally lodged an appeal against the sentences handed down to those who were indicted for the murder of Pte Rooney and the attacks on Shane Kearney, Corporal Joshua Phelan and Trooper Nathan Bryan in the same incident. Advertisement Mr Harris wrote to the Lebanese government following last month's trial to express the disappointment of the Irish Government and, in particular, of the Rooney family, at the leniency of the sentences handed down. I have been in discussions with the Lebanese Government today. They have now appealed the leniency of the sentences for those who murdered Private Seán Rooney and injured his colleagues. This is a welcome development. I spoke with Natasha Rooney on this today. — Simon Harris TD (@SimonHarrisTD) August 12, 2025 He met Pte Rooney's family last week after his mother criticised Mr Harris's engagement with them over the matter. Mr Harris, who is also the Minister for Defence and Foreign Affairs, had committed to holding urgent talks with the Lebanese Justice and Defence Ministers in order to press for an appeal. Those talks took place on Tuesday. Advertisement Mr Harris said he then spoke to Pte Rooney's mother, Natasha McCloskey, and informed her that the Lebanese Government has appointed a new military chief prosecutor to take over the case. He also said an appeal against the sentences has this afternoon been formally lodged with the military Cassation Court, while the Lebanese authorities have committed to taking urgent steps to ensure the individual convicted of the murder of Private Rooney is taken into custody. Mr Harris said: 'I very much welcome the confirmation today from the Lebanese Justice and Defence Ministers that an appeal has been formally lodged against the sentences handed down in the case of the death of Private Sean Rooney and the injuries of his colleagues.' He added: 'In my calls with my Lebanese counterparts, I made it clear that the sentences handed down in this case are simply not acceptable and are very disappointing. Kenny Noye's Brinks-Mat fame 'not right' says ex-police officer
The former detective superintendent who put murderer Kenneth Noye behind bars says he is uncomfortable with the criminal's new-found "mini celebrity" played a pivotal role in the Brinks-Mat heist in 1983 - one of Britain's biggest robberies in which £26m worth of gold, diamonds and cash was has received recent notoriety after being portrayed by actor Jack Lowden in BBC series The Gold - which dramatises the Nick Biddiss, responsible for securing a murder conviction against Noye in 2000, said it is not right that people are shaking the hand of a killer just because of his fame. Noye's crimes In 1985, two years after Brinks-Mat, undercover policeman John Fordham was stabbed to death in the grounds of Noye's was cleared of the killing on the grounds of self defence but imprisoned for 14 years in 1986 for conspiring to handle gold and evade VAT was released after eight years but stabbed 21-year-old Stephen Cameron to death in an attack at the Swanley interchange of the M25 in was jailed in 2000 and released in 2019. "Stabbings at this time were very rare, but nowadays they seem to be very frequent," said Mr Biddiss."This was a road rage incident, a young couple, a stabbing, in broad daylight."Mr Cameron's fiancée saw her partner being killed in the attack by Noye."My view is this, if you're convicted of murder, don't forget murder's pre-meditated, the only way you should be coming out is in a box," said Mr Biddiss. "But some of these judges don't live in the real world, they go home in space rockets because they don't live on this planet."According to recent media reports, Noye, 78, has been seen enjoying his renewed fame around Sevenoaks, near to where he lives."I don't feel comfortable with it, especially when you think this man is a violent criminal," said Mr Biddiss."Why is Kenny Noye being lionised by people in West Kingsdown and Sevenoaks, shaking his hand, going around in effect being a mini celebrity? It's not right."The Ministry of Justice previously said Noye is on licence for the rest of his life and could return to prison if he fails to comply with his a quarter of a century on, Mr Biddiss says he still regularly thinks about the "senseless" murder of Mr Cameron.

Gang who squirted sauce on victims to distract them as they stole thousands are jailed after months-long theft spree
Members of a ruthless organised crime gang who robbed people by squirting them with bottled sauces have been jailed. The five gang members used distraction techniques including squirting mustard and ketchup onto the coats of their elderly victims, who had just taken cash out of the bank, whilst another gang member robbed them. Between October 2024 and February 2025, the five offenders observed the victims collecting large amounts of money from branches in Kent, including Chatham, Dartford, Gravesend and Sevenoaks. They then followed their victims, who were in their 60s, 70s and 80s, back to where their cars were parked. The criminals then engaged the victims in conversation while accomplices stole the cash. Other methods used to distract the victims included placing nails and pins on the floor to either cause a puncture or encourage the victim to get out and remove the potential hazard. They also squirted sauce or mustard from a bottle onto the victim's coat and then pointed out the stain to cause a distraction. On each occasion, the victims, who were in their 60s, 70s and 80s, were engaged in talking sufficiently for another accomplice to gain access to the cash inside a car or bag and steal it undetected. A police investigation led to the tracking of a vehicle involved in the thefts back to Hemel Hempstead, where the gang members were later arrested. Jhon Ruiz, Maria Carmen, Solomon Rondon, Miguel Perez and Matias Vega, all of no fixed address, were later charged with conspiracy to steal. Further investigations following their arrest found the thieves had also targeted victims in Berkshire and Essex. In total, the gang stole £20,720 and attempted to steal a further £10,085. All five pleaded guilty to the indictment and were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 7 August. Perez, 31, was imprisoned for three years and nine months and Carmen, 48, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Ruiz, 40, Rondon, 49 and Vega, 32, were all jailed for two years and seven months. Investigating officer, Detective Constable Emma Laimbeer, said: 'These heartless criminals targeted victims who could not afford to lose the large amounts of cash that were stolen. 'Their targets were people whose first instinct was to trust strangers who engaged them in conversation. The victims' good natures were then exploited by an organised gang who used a variety of distraction techniques to get access to their money. 'Our detectives were absolutely determined to track down these offenders and successfully identified their car through painstaking examination of CCTV. 'Once identified, investigators worked out the most likely location to intercept the thieves and travelled out of Kent to effect the arrests.'
