Nilambur byelection evolves into a high-profile four-cornered electoral battle
The byelection to elect a legislator to represent the Nilambur Assembly constituency in the Malappuram district, with barely seven months remaining in the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's term, evolved into a high-profile four-cornered electoral battle on Sunday (June 1, 2025).
Political theatre, last-minute switching of sides, and the entry of unexpected candidates marked the hectic day, with the Election Commission's last date for filing nominations expiring on Monday (June 2).
The LDF and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) had put their cards on the table last week by fielding Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee member M. Swaraj and Congress leader Aryadan Shoukath as their candidates, respectively.
The two-term LDF-backed Independent MLA from Nilambur and the present All India Trinamool Congress State convenor, P.V. Anvar, whose acrimonious parting of ways with the ruling front precipitated the byelection, declared his candidature in the bypoll.
Mr. Anvar had attempted to tag the Trinamool with the Congress-led UDF since joining West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's party in January.
Aspiring for a berth in the Opposition alliance, Mr. Anvar initially ruled out contesting the bypoll. He became a fixture at UDF rallies, playing the role of an LDF insider-turned whistleblower against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
However, M. Anvar's relationship with the UDF soured at the last minute after he aired scepticism about Mr. Shaukath's winnability. Earlier, he had discomfited the UDF leadership by attempting to influence candidate selection by prematurely backing V. Joy, a local Congress leader from the Christian settler farmer community, a significant electoral bloc in the Nilambur Assembly constituency.
Mr. Anvar singled out the Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, for not billeting him in the UDF. The UDF denied speculation that Mr. Anvar's candidature had injected a measure of variability into the electoral calculus of the Opposition.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which initially viewed the bypoll as insignificant, belatedly changed tack and fielded Mohan George, a Kerala Congress leader aligned with the UDF, as its candidate in Nilambur.
The BJP recognised it could ill-afford to remain on the sidelines in an arguably pivotal byelection, widely regarded as an approximate bellwether of Kerala's voting behaviour ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.
The LDF weaponised Mr. George's 'shift in allegiance' to push its electoral talking point in the predominantly Muslim Nilambur constituency, stating that the UDF leaders' secular credentials were suspect and that they were increasingly vulnerable to poaching by the BJP.

Opposition demands details of Supreme Court findings on Justice Varma
Some Opposition parties are urging the government to share with them the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed panel against high court judge Yashwant Varma in the "cash seizure" case as the ruling side is seeking multi-party support for its push for bringing an impeachment motion against the judge. The more damning the findings, the more inclined the Opposition would be to back the proposed impeachment move, said people familiar with the matter, even as leaders of Opposition parties including the Congress were still firming up their formal response. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju informally reached out to at least two Congress MPs, and some regional parties, seeking support for the motion. "I can't say what is going on between the government and Opposition on the impeachment issue. But, according to the rules, the Members of Parliament, not the government, can move an impeachment motion against a judge with the required number of signatures for admission. So, for us MPs, to sign the proposed impeachment motion, we would require knowing what exactly the case for impeachment against justice Varma is," said Congress' Rajya Sabha member Vivek Tankha, a senior advocate. "So, we expect the government side to share with the Opposition the findings of the Supreme Court-appointed panel that looked into the complaints against justice Varma." Tankha had earlier written to the Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, urging him to take steps to ensure MPs' get access to the panel's findings. Some sections in the Opposition nurse a grudge against the government earlier opposing and blocking the Opposition push for impeachment of the then CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav. There is yet another section which views the case against justice Varma with a sense of suspicion and as part of a crafty manoeuvre. Yet, many in the Opposition feel that the prospect of the ruling side unveiling, formally or informally, critical findings of corruption by the Supreme Court-appointed panel against justice Varma, and the fact that the CJI had forwarded that findings to the government for considering action against the judge, would guide the Opposition's response. Live Events "Corruption in the judiciary is a matter of concern for all citizens and political parties. It cannot be tolerated, and strong measures must be taken to root it out. At the same time, the independence of the judiciary is crucial and the judiciary must remain free from political influence," said D Raja of the CPI, which has two MPs in both Houses. "As far as the impeachment motion is concerned, the government should consult with Opposition parties. It should not assume that it can proceed unilaterally on such important matters."

US expected to block Gaza ceasefire vote at UNSC
The UN Security Council will vote Wednesday on a resolution calling for a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access in Gaza , a measure expected to fail due to a US veto. It is the 15-member body's first vote on the subject since November, when the United States , a key Israeli ally, also blocked a text calling for an end to fighting. The new resolution "demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties." It also calls for the "immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups." Underlining a "catastrophic humanitarian situation" in the Palestinian territory , the resolution additionally demands the lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Live Events It will be put to vote at 4:00 pm Wednesday (2000 GMT), but several diplomats indicated to AFP that they expected the US to wield its veto power. They added that the representatives from the 10 elected members of the Council, who will introduce the text, tried in vain to negotiate with the American side. The veto, if applied, would be the first by Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January. Israel has faced growing international pressure to end its war in Gaza, which was triggered by the unprecedented October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israeli soil. That scrutiny has increased over flailing aid distribution in Gaza, which Israel blocked for more than two months before allowing a small number of UN vehicles to enter in mid-May. A US-backed relief effort called the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF) has also come under criticism for going against long-standing aid principles by coordinating relief efforts with a military belligerent.

J&K Congress protests against BJP MLA for alleged derogatory remarks on Sonia, Priyanka
Jammu, June 4 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Wednesday staged a protest against a BJP MLA over his alleged derogatory remarks against UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Protesting Congress leaders burnt an effigy of the BJP MLA in protest led by senior women leaders. According to reports, BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa was caught on camera saying that the two leaders did not know the value of 'sindoor' because they never wore it. Joined by senior PCC leaders, the protestors raised slogans and demanded that the BJP high command should apologise to CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the derogatory utterances of the BJP MLA besides taking action against him. 'The remarks are not only outrageous and shameful, but an insult to the dignity of Indian women and an attack on the values that define Indian society,' they said. Senior Congress leader, Namrta Sharma condemned the remarks and demanded the immediate suspension of the BJP MLA. She stated, 'Sonia Gandhi lost her husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, in service of this nation. The sindoor she wears is not a symbol of tradition alone, but a mark of sacrifice, courage, and devotion to India. Mixing such sacred sentiments with your dirty political agenda reflects the moral bankruptcy of BJP leaders.' Zahida Khan also condemned the remarks, stating that such language has no place in any civilised society. PCC working President Raman Bhalla and Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma and Ex MLC Ved Parkash Mahajan led slogans condemning the BJP's "regressive and misogynistic mindset". They called upon the BJP high command to issue a public apology and take strict action against the leader to prevent further erosion of political discourse.
