Threefold increase in banana production in state: Govt

Patna: The state has recorded a threefold increase in banana production over the last two decades, thanks to the state's agriculture roadmap and adoption of tissue culture technology by the farmers. According to the state agriculture department, banana output rose from 5.45 lakh metric tonnes in 2004-05 to 19.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2022-23, marking a 261% increase. "The area under banana cultivation also expanded significantly, from 27,200 hectares in 2004-05 to 42,900 hectares in 2022-23, an increase of 58%," an official from the agriculture department said. Productivity too has more than doubled, growing from 20 metric tonnes per hectare to 45 metric tonnes, showing an increase of 125%. Encouraging the use of tissue culture in banana farming, the state govt also provides a 50% subsidy (Rs 62,500 per hectare) under its Phal Vikas Yojana. In the financial year 2024-25 alone, over 3,600 farmers have availed the benefits of the scheme.
