Minnesota man remembers meeting the Beatles before 1965 concert
The Brief On August 21, 1965, the Beatles came to Minnesota to perform at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington. The audience was so loud that many people couldn't hear the band at the concert. Two Minnesotans remember meeting the Beatles face to face 60 years ago. BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (FOX 9) - Sixty years ago, the Beatles came to The Land of 10,000 Lakes to perform at the Metropolitan Stadium, which was demolished in the 80s, and the site became home to the Mall of America in the 90s. On Sunday, the Mall of America hosted a celebration of the historic concert. Celebration at Mall of America What we know Four men dressed up as John, Paul, George, and Ringo. All the hits were played by the Beatles cover band at MOA. FOX 9 talked to two men who remember what that day was like when the Beatles were in Bloomington 60 years ago. "Noise, noise, and more noise. You could hardly hear anything if you were in the audience," said Ron Butwin, who was at the Beatles concert. Local perspective Butwin recalls when Beatlemania came to Bloomington, the audience was louder than the band. Before the concert, he gave George Harrison a gift at a press conference. "As we started walking to George Harrison to present him with the guitar he got. It was like a little kid in a candy store," said Butwin. Then came a memory for a lifetime. "I opened it up carefully, and it was a beautiful letter from George, thanking me and just giving me some fun information, and then signed by him," said Butwin. Channel 9 connection to the Beatles The backstory Bob Pratt went with his father, Ken Pratt, a former photographer at KMSP, to cover the Beatles coming to Minnesota. Bob was expecting to see the Beatles from where the press was standing. Until he and his father got invited to the Twins' clubhouse. Ten-year-old Bob couldn't believe it. "I shook hands with all four of them. Ringo was first, Paul was second, John was third, and George was fourth. And then I just told him, I love your music," said Bob Pratt. Dig deeper He even had this moment with the legendary John Lennon. "John Lennon asked me. He said, 'Did you grow up here in Minnesota?' And I said, 'born and raised.' He goes, 'maybe you can help me with some of the pronunciations of the ball players' names,'" said Pratt. The name John was asking Bob about was Zoilo Verasalles. But get this, he knew who Harmon Killebrew was. Both gentlemen got to watch the concert from the dugout 60 years ago. Netflix has removed the most brutal film of the last 10 years
Every month, Netflix removes a large selection of movies and TV shows from its library. These titles often feel as if they're taken down without warning; the service only informs you when you scroll through its library and select something that happens to be leaving in the next 30 days. In recent years, Netflix Originals have also found themselves on the departure list – something that has led to plenty of consternation among users who believed these titles would remain on the service for good. Among the films leaving this service this month are the Final Destination and Hunger Games films as well as 2018 film The Nightingale. The psychological thriller, from The Babadook director Jennifer Kent, is a tough watch that isn't for the faint hearted. Set in 1825, The Nightingale follows a young Irish convict (Aisling Franciosi) who seeks vengeance against members of the Colonial forces of Tasmania after unspeakable acts are committed against her. It could very well be the most brutal film of the last 10 years – and led to cinema walkouts due to its graphic portrayal of rape and murder. Kent defended her film after reports of complaints, saying she doesn't believe the violence to be 'gratuitous or exploitative'. Meanwhile, the TV show that will leave the biggest absence after its Netflix departure is US drama Lost. Beginning in 2004, Lost – which followed survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 – became the biggest cult show on the planet, generating intense fan discussion and theories on the internet throughout its six seasons on air. The show is regularly listed on polls ranking the best TV shows of all time, with Empire. EW, Time and Variety all opting to include Lost. Lost celebrated its 20th anniversary in September 2024 and has recently had a resurgence thanks to its arrival on Netflix. See Tom Cruise defy death in exclusive 'Mission: Impossible Final Reckoning' deleted scene
Tom Cruise's daredevil "Mission: Impossible" stunts are so cool, it's hard to believe that anything gets left on the cutting-room floor. But editing is important to the filmmaking process, and director Christopher McQuarrie had hard decisions to make in crafting "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" (available to buy Aug. 19 on digital platforms). One of the biggest moments in the action adventure is a dizzying sequence involving Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt and a harrowing biplane chase, and USA TODAY is exclusively premiering a nifty aerial scene deleted from the film. Near the end of this eighth "Mission" installment, Ethan is in airborne pursuit of villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales), and has to navigate – in death-defying manner – going from his biplane to Gabriel's mid-air. McQuarrie filmed 400 hours of footage that ended up being distilled down to a mere 15 minutes. Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox "Each one of these shots represents a great deal of difficulty, a lot of danger, a lot of coordination between multiple aircraft, a lot of skill from the pilots, and always looking for ways to show that is Tom flying the plane and not a stuntman – which is not usually the case," McQuarrie says in a voiceover introducing the nixed sequence. It's the first of a two-part stunt where Ethan tries to climb onto Gabriel's plane, our hero's foot hits the control stick, and the plane goes into a nasty roll where Ethan is hanging out of the thing precariously before getting his bearings back. McQuarrie's film editor, Eddie Hamilton, kept telling him it was "redundant," though the director "of course resisted that," McQuarrie says. But "it could go and so it went." In addition to an array of deleted scenes, the "Final Reckoning" digital release includes a bunch of bonus features that dig into Cruise's stunt work, including notching a Guinness World Record for most burning parachute jumps by an individual.
