Major relief to lorry owners as govt slashes Green Tax
The ordinance will benefit over three lakh lorry operators by significantly lowering the Green Tax.
According to the new rules, vehicles aged between seven and 12 years from registration will incur an annual Green Tax of Rs 1,500. For vehicles older than 12 years, the tax is set at Rs 3,000 annually. Previously, vehicle owners paid 50 per cent of the quarterly tax for vehicles aged seven to 10 years, with the tax varying based on vehicle size, tyres, and other factors. For vehicles aged 10 to 12 years, owners paid one quarterly tax, while those over 12 years faced a hefty Rs 20,000 Green Tax.
The high Green Tax had long burdened the transport sector, prompting truck operators to demand relief. Recently, the state Cabinet approved the tax reduction.
Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association general secretary Y V Eswara Rao along with other leaders, met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to urge the issuance of GO. The ordinance has now been released, with the new tax rates set to take effect soon.
Eswara Rao expressed gratitude to Chief Minister, the transport minister, public representatives, and senior officials for the gazette notification. He noted that the reduction fulfills a long-standing demand of the lorry owners, particularly since the NDA coalition government assumed office, and will benefit over three lakh truck operators across Andhra Pradesh.

Vijayawada: The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) has approved 22 investment proposals worth Rs 39,473 crore in sectors like IT, food processing, renewable energy, and tourism. The projects cleared by the SIPB include JSW steel plant, ITC hotels, LuLu mall, ReNew, Laurus Labs, and others. Once realised, these investments are likely to create 30,899 jobs. Naidu said the projects allocated with land must be completed within the stipulated time. He asked officials and ministers to keep track of the execution and address any issues causing delays. "For tourism projects, integrated planning should be implemented, allowing for ancillary activities beyond the main project," said Naidu. He emphasised integrating service sectors into projects and preparing govt land for PPP tourism projects. The chief minister further suggested creating integrated tourism projects in Srisailam to attract more tourists and asked for estimates for the expansion of Srisailam road. He also directed the development of an employment portal to track job creation in public and private sectors.

Green signal awaited for led streetlights project
Hubballi: Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) continues to await approval for its LED streetlights initiative, even after four months of delay. The project aims at converting all existing streetlights to LED fixtures. Despite completing necessary procedures and selecting a contractor for the Rs 93-crore project to replace 75,000 streetlights through a PPP model, progress remains hindered. Although the file was forwarded from Directorate of Municipal Administration to the urban development department in March for final approval, it has not received clearance. The project of installing LEDs was a project under Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Limited (HDSCL), which planned to replace 58,000 streetlights with LEDs. From 2018 to 2022, the HDSCL called for tenders for seven times, but as no one participated, the HDSCL handed over the project to the HDMC. The HDMC has completed all necessary technical evaluations and financial assessments for this energy-efficient lighting initiative. Under the planned implementation, the selected private partner would be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and replacement of faulty lights for seven years. The contractor would also establish a centralised control room to monitor the functioning of these LED lights. Local councillors have expressed concern about the delay, noting that better street lighting is crucial for public safety and improved urban infrastructure. The municipal corporation expects that once approved, the installation work could be completed within eight months. The new LED system would cover all major roads, residential areas, and public spaces in both cities. According to the sources, among the two agencies that participated in the tender, the one with prior experience of implementing LED streetlight projects in Tumakuru and Shivamogga is likely to be selected for the new initiative. SM Ganachari, executive engineer, electricity department in HDMC, said they are actively pursuing the matter with higher authorities and expect to get clearance in a couple of weeks. The deputy mayor of Hubballi-Dharwad, Santosh Chavan, expressed concern over the delayed implementation of the LED streetlights project under the Public-Private Partnership model. An IIT Kanpur graduate with an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, and then a Vice President at Goldman Sachs, he quit his high-profile job to shadow security guards in gated societies. Not for a documentary, not as a social experiment—but to build something that would redefine urban community living in India. That idea became journey began at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, one of India's most prestigious schools. He then went on to pursue a from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, followed by an MBA from IIM- Ahmedabad. Armed with a world-class education, he entered the finance world and spent six years at Goldman Sachs, eventually rising to the position of Vice President.
