Harry Dunn's family file complaint against former police chief after report

Yahoo5 hours ago

The family of Harry Dunn, who died in a collision with US spy Anne Sacoolas, have submitted a formal complaint over the conduct of a former chief constable.
The 19-year-old motor-biker died after he was hit in a head-on collision by Sacoolas in 2019, who was exiting the American intelligence base RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire.
On Wednesday, an independent report found that officers prioritised the welfare of Sacoolas, who was able to leave the country claiming diplomatic immunity, after officers did not arrest her.
Harry's mum, Charlotte Charles, who received an MBE for services to road safety, said the family had been let down "really, really badly."
The family have now written to the office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Danielle Stone, to ask whether the contents of the report will be referred to the police watchdog, the IOPC.
The report criticised former chief constable Nick Adderley for multiple failures, including giving inaccurate public statements about Sacoolas's immunity, claiming she could waive it when in fact only the US government could do so.
Mr Adderley, who was sacked last year after lying about his military record, was found to have caused a breakdown in relations with Mr Dunn's family due to his "erroneous" public statements.
In the email, seen by Sky News, Radd Seiger, spokesperson for Harry's family, wrote: "Although Mr Adderley has already been dismissed for gross misconduct in relation to unrelated matters, this report provides damning evidence of multiple leadership failures and misconduct directly attributable to him in the handling of this case.
"These failures have caused lasting harm to the Dunn family, undermined public trust, and compromised the integrity of the investigation.
"Justice was ultimately done despite him, not because of him, and due to the skill and perseverance of the investigation team and the CPS. The story is scarcely believable".

Following a long fight for justice by Mr Dunn's family, Sacoolas eventually pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving via video link at the Old Bailey in December 2022.
She later received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
The family is now calling on the government to conduct an inquiry into the case.
Sky News has contacted Mr Adderley and the office of the Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for comment.

Omar Berrada issues hard-hitting message to Manchester United over City's 115 charges

Those within Manchester United have been handing a tough message from CEO Omar Berrada concerning Manchester City's 115 charges, according to fresh claims. Supporters and figures throughout football are continuing to wait for a clear verdict and outcome surrounding Manchester City's charges issued by the Premier League for alleged breaches of the division's financial rules. Advertisement It comes after manager Pep Guardiola said back in February that he expected the club to learn the outcome of the hearing into its 115 charges 'in one month', after such hearing took place in front of an independent commission between September and December. While no-one has formally stated when a decision will be reached, and the widespread expectation of such a verdict coming in the first quarter of 2025, additional lines of reporting have indicated that even the summer time may not be realistic. Nevertheless, the ongoing wait has got some figures within the game bracing for what could be, in their eyes, the worst possible outcome and Manchester City emerge from the situation entirely unscathed. According to the information of Manchester City insider 'Tolmie's Hairdoo' on X, Omar Berrada – CEO at Manchester United – has now briefed those within Old Trafford to prepare for potential 'civil war' within the Premier League. Advertisement The message to the club is also said to have included the hard-hitting fact that there was no wrongdoing during his time at Manchester City, as well as the development that an announcement is imminent concerning the Etihad club's charges. Berrada is also said to be expecting Manchester City to be cleared of all of the 'most serious' charges put to the club by the Premier League in February, 2023. Omar Berrada was first appointed by Manchester United to their position of chief executive in January 2024 after he resigned as chief football operations officer at City Football Group, earning a significant reputation for his work at Manchester City. The 47-year-old was initially the Etihad Stadium club's commercial director, before taking on the position of chief operating officer ahead of moving into the chief football operations officer position within the wider City Football Group. Significant alterations in Manchester City's boardroom have continued beyond Berrada's exit, with Txiki Begiristain opting to leave the role of sporting director this summer after 13 seasons in the position, succeeded by Sporting CP's Hugo Viana.

Rapist's sentence increased after victim returns

A rapist has been given an extended jail term thanks in part to one of his victims giving evidence against him for a second time. The Crown Prosecution (CPS) said Randy Ayor, 22, physically, sexually and emotionally abused three women after starting relationships with them while meeting them through work. Ayor was found not guilty of rape against the first accuser earlier this year but Leicester Crown Court heard he abused two further women within weeks of the verdict and she was invited to give evidence again. After being convicted of rape and assault against the second and third women in April he was sentenced on Thursday to 22 years in prison plus a three-year extension. The CPS said the first woman described how Ayor, from Leicester, became friendly towards her, helping her with car issues over a weekend but tricked her into coming back to his flat after a night out with friends. She made an allegation of rape and assault but Ayor was acquitted by a jury. However within weeks of the acquittal, Ayor attacked two further women, switching abruptly from "being charming and caring, to being violent". The CPS said he continued his emotional abuse by controlling what they wore, who they spoke to and refusing to let them get away from him. Ayor was brought before court for a second time and stood trial in April. Although Ayor had been acquitted of the rape of the first woman, she was able to give her account to a jury again, this time as bad character evidence, as her allegations were so similar to the others, the CPS said. The allegations she made could not be the subject of further charges, due to there being no new evidence in her case, but the testimony she gave at the trial showed a "similar pattern of behaviour, which strengthened the prosecution's case" against Ayor. The CPS said it must apply to the court to use bad character evidence and demonstrate it is relevant to the case and still consistent with giving the defendant a fair trial. After his trial in April, a jury found Ayor guilty of five counts of rape, one count of assault by penetration and one count of strangulation against the second woman. He was also convicted of one count of rape, one count of false imprisonment, two counts of actual bodily harm, one count of assault by beating and one count of controlling or coercive behaviour against the third woman, with Ayor pleading guilty to one count of strangulation against her. Charlotte Caulton-Scott, from the CPS, said: "Despite still being traumatised from their experiences, Ayor's victims persevered in giving evidence, revealing Ayor as the manipulator he truly is. "Although Ayor was acquitted of crimes against her, the extraordinary resolve of the first complainant to give evidence in this trial, contributed to him facing the consequences of his abhorrent crimes."
