The European Space Agency (ESA) is two dozen steps closer to launching Plato, a spacecraft that will search for terrestrial planets outside of our solar system, after the installation of 24 of its 26 cameras.
ESA's Plato, or PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars, mission will use its 26 cameras simultaneously to study terrestrial exoplanets in orbits up to the habitable zone of sun-like stars. The mission will measure the sizes of these worlds and discover exomoons and rings around them. Plato will also characterize the planets' host stars by studying tiny light variations in the starlight it receives.
As pictured here, the work to give Plato its sensitive eyes is nearing completion. Twenty-four of the 26 cameras have been installed on the spacecraft's optical bench, the structure that keeps all cameras firmly pointed in the right direction. Two more "fast" cameras will be installed in the coming weeks.
"This activity is one of the most critical in building the satellite. The cameras are delicate elements that must be attached to the spacecraft's supporting structure with great accuracy, to ensure that they are very precisely aligned," said Thomas Walloschek, ESA's Plato project manager, in a statement.
At present, the Plato spacecraft is under assembly at OHB, an aerospace contractor, in Germany.
When it launches in 2026, Plato will be sent into a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth Lagrange point-2 (L2).
Plato's 24 cameras are arranged in four groups of six that have the same field of view. The lines of sight of the four groups are offset by an angle of 9.2 degrees. With this configuration, the cameras can survey a very large area of the sky, more than 2000 square degrees, at once.
The 24 identical cameras will make images every 25 seconds, while the two "fast" cameras will make them every 2.5 seconds.
Each of the 24 cameras is equipped with four CCD light sensors for a total of 81.4-megapixel images per camera, resulting in two-billion-pixel images for the overall spacecraft. These will be the largest images ever for a space mission.

This transcript has been edited for clarity. Dear colleagues, I'm Christoph Diener from the faculty of medicine at the University of Duisburg-Essen, in Germany. In this month's video, I would like to concentrate on the topic of dementia. We made tremendous progress in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, not only at a time when patients show symptoms but also in the preclinical phase of the disease. Biomarkers and Lifestyle We have new biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid with amyloid and tau PET, and more recently, we have now biomarkers in plasma. One is p-tau217, and this has shown a high sensitivity for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and a good correlation with cerebrospinal fluid markers, as published recently in Neurology . A second aspect is we know that there are about 14 different lifestyle factors and comorbidities that increase the risk for mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and in particular, Alzheimer's disease. The most frequent ones — as you know — are vascular risk factors, hearing loss, smoking, high alcohol intake,obesity, and nutrition. Unfortunately, for most of these correlations, there have been no prospective randomized trials to show that management or treatment of these risk factors or comorbidities would really decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Just to give you an example, there is one study from the US published in Neurology with more than 100,000 participants, and they showed that consumption of red meat significantly increases the risk of dementia. We have in the past not really considered lifestyle factors enough to prevent Alzheimer's disease. Herpes Zoster and Cognitive Impairment There are very interesting findings on the correlation between Herpes zoster and the increased risk of cognitive impairment and have now several studies with hundreds of thousands of patients in the US, in the UK and Australia, which showed that, if someone has Herpes zoster infection, over the next 13 years, the risk of dementia is increased between 15% and 30%. The more interesting feature is that obviously vaccination against Herpes zoster reduces the risk of have been several studies, including one in Wales with almost 300,000 participants. When the vaccination was introduced, participants born before 1933 were not vaccinated, while 50% of those born after 1933 were vaccinated. After 7 years, the diagnosis of dementia was reduced by 3.5% in vaccinated relative risk reduction for dementia was 20%. Another aspect is which vaccine. The study from the United States with more than 100,000 people observed over 6 years showed that recombinant vaccine is more effective in preventing cognitive impairment and dementia compared to the traditional live vaccine. The risk reduction was 17%. GLP-1 Drugs and Anti-Amyloids We have a totally new class of medicines to treat diabetes and obesity: the GLP-1 receptor agonists. There is indirect evidence that they might also be beneficial for the prevention of dementia. One publication in JAMA Neurology looked at a database of more than 33,000 patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonistsand 34,000 treated with SGLT2 inhibitors compared with standard therapy. For both substances, there was a 35%-45% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's dementia and other dementias compared to standard therapy. This has to be shown in one of the ongoing trials with GLP-1 receptor agonists. Let me mention the new beta-amyloid antibodies, lecanemab and donanemab. They have been approved both in the United States and in Europe for the treatment of early stages of Alzheimer's disease. This is a complicated business because you need biomarkers and amyloid PET for the diagnosis, you need regular intravenous administration, and you need MR controls to check for Amyloid-related imaging abnormalities. At the recent Alzheimer's Congress in Toronto, for both substances, long-term data were presented for a time period of three to 4 years. They showed that with increasing time of treatment, there is also an increase, obviously, in efficacy if the data are compared with a database, not within the randomized trials, because these were open-label, long-term studies. With donanemab, it was interesting that, in more than 75% of the patients, there was no longer amyloid detected on PET. The other important issue is that there is now a new application of donanemab that is subcutaneous. Spend Money on Lifestyle At the end of the day. I'm not really sure whether this is an effective treatment if we consider cost and risk, and I think a healthcare system would be better advised to invest all this money into teaching of at-risk persons, in particular, to have an impact on lifestyle. I'm aware that, in low-income people, this is extremely difficult, because they cannot afford healthy food and they cannot afford to pay for a gym for regular exercise. I think we can do much better, in particular, in treating comorbidities like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and so on. The EV4 is built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of Hyundai Motor. Customers can choose between two battery sizes: a standard 58.3kWh and a larger 81.4kWh option. In February 2025, the company presented the exterior design of the new EV4 model range, unveiling saloon and hatchback variants. EV4 is equipped with energy features, including vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities. Additionally, it features a lightweight aluminium bonnet and comes in a range of eight exterior colours, with a matte finish. The Zilina plant, which opened its doors in 2004, is a pivotal part of Kia's European strategy. Spanning 2km2, the facility employs approximately 3,700 individuals and is ideally situated to serve major European markets. Alongside the EV4, the plant manufactures other models like the Kia Sportage and Kia XCeed, including their hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The Zilina facility is said to have an annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles and 540,000 engines. Since its inception, the plant has produced over five million units, contributing to roughly 11% of Kia's worldwide vehicle production, the company noted in a press release. The South Korean automaker has reported a 6.5% increase in revenues to a record Won29.35tn in Q2 of 2025, attributed to robust global demand for its hybrid models, increased average selling prices, and favourable currency exchange rates. Honor's Magic V5 Boasts On-Device Live AI Call Translation for Guaranteed Privacy

"Hola! ¿Hablas inglés?" I asked the woman who answered the phone in the Barcelona restaurant. I was calling in a futile attempt to make a reservation for the CNET team dinner during Mobile World Congress this year. Unfortunately, I don't know Spanish (I learned French and German at school). And as it turned out, she didn't speak English either. "No!" she said, and brusquely hung up. What I needed in that moment was the kind of AI call translation feature that's becoming increasingly prevalent on phones – including Samsung and Google devices, and, from next week, Honor. When Honor unveils its Magic V5 foldable at a launch event on Aug. 28 in London, it will come with what the company is calling "the industry's first on-device large speech model," which will allow live AI call translation to take place on device, with no cloud processing. Currently the phone supports six languages – English, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. For the aforementioned reasons, I can't test all of these, but I've already had a play around with the feature and can confirm it did a very effective job of translating my garbled messages into French. I only wish I'd had it available to me in Spain when I needed it. The model Honor has deployed was designed by the company in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, based on the open-source Whisper model, said Fei Fang, president of product at Honor in an interview. It's been optimized for streaming speech recognition, automatic language detection and translation inference acceleration (that's speed and efficiency, to you and I). According to Fang, Honor's user experience studies have shown that as long as translation occurs within 1.5 seconds, it doesn't "induce waiting anxiety," in anyone attempting to use AI call translation. As such, it's made sure to keep the latency to within these parameters so you won't get anxious waiting for the translation to kick in. "We also work together with industry language experts to consistently and comprehensively evaluate the accuracy of our output," she added. "The assessment is primarily based on five metrics: accuracy, logical coherence, readability, grammatical correctness and conciseness." In addition to Honor's AI model, live translation is being powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. The 8 Elite's NPU allows multimodal generative AI applications to be integrated onto the device, allowing. Honor's algorithms work together with the NPU to keep power consumption as low as possible while maintaining the required accuracy of the translations, said Christopher Patrick, SVP of mobile handsets at Qualcomm. There are a number of benefits to having the AI model embedded on the Magic V5, but perhaps the most compelling is the privacy it guarantees. It means that everything is processed locally and your calls will therefore remain completely confidential. The fact that the model lives on device and you don't need to download voice packages also reduces its storage needs. Another benefit of running the model on the phone itself is "offline usability," said Patrick. "All conversation information is stored directly on-device and users can access it anytime, anywhere, without network restrictions." The work Honor has done on AI call translation is set to be recognized at the upcoming Interspeech conference on speech science and tech. But already, Honor is thinking about how this use of AI can be used to enable other new and exciting features for the people who buy its phones. "Beyond the essential user scenario of call translation, Honor's on-device large speech model will also be deployed in scenarios such as face-to-face translation [and] AI subtitles," said Fang. The process of developing the speech model has allowed Honor's AI team to gain extensive experience of model optimization, which it will use to develop other AI applications, she added. "Looking ahead, we will continue to expand capabilities in areas such as emotion recognition and health monitoring, further empowering voice interactions with your on-device AI assistant," she said.
