Hope remains to save historic Catholic church engulfed in flames, Archdiocese says
There's a chance crews might be able to save a historic church that went up in flames on Thursday.

Crews were called to the fire at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Maria Stein around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Workers on the roof were placing shingles when they saw smoke and called 911. Large flames and black smoke were later seen coming from the church.

The steeple of the church eventually collapsed during the fire.
The church hasn't been cleared as safe to go inside yet, but crews started the salvage work from the outside on Friday.

2 more Lake Lanier parks reopen
Two parks on Lake Lanier that were temporarily closed for Memorial Day are back open. The US Corps of Engineers confirmed that Little Hall and Old Federal Day Use parks reopened on Friday. U.S. Senator presses CSX to increase rail safety after 2 recent train derailments in Georgia
U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is urging action from rail company CSX after two trains derailed in Georgia in less than two months. Ossoff announced the launch of an inquiry into CSX Transportation, requesting answers from company CEO Joseph Hinrichs after train cars went off track in March and May. The two derailments mentioned by Ossoff for his safety inquiry happened on March 25, when six CSX train cars derailed in Fayette County, and on May 9 in Smyrna, when 17 train cars derailed in a residential area. The March 25 derailment in Fayette County was preceded by a warning to the rail company by law enforcement hours before 'that they had found broken tracks at the intersection where the derailment later occurred.' 'I write to express serious concern about two recent derailments of CSX train cars in Georgia, and to request specific solutions from CSX as soon as possible on plans to prevent such derailments in the future,' Ossoff said in his letter to Hinrichs. 'More must be done to protect my constituents.' The senator wants CSX to provide information on new solutions to prevent future derailments and is pushing for answers on what they're doing to make that happen. Ossoff said the derailments and 'significant operation failures could have seriously injured or killed my constituents,' saying the company has to do more to prevent serious incidents in the future. In his letter to Hinrichs, Ossoff requested answers within two weeks related to the nature of the failures, prevention and if hazardous materials are ever on the routes where the derailments happened, among others. Ticket lottery now open for 2026 Masters Tournament, Women's Amateur
This week is your first chance to apply for a coveted patron spot at Augusta National for the 2026 Masters Tournament and Women's Amateur. The 2026 Masters tournament is scheduled for April 9-12 with the practice rounds scheduled for April 6-8. The 2026 Augusta National Women's Amateur will take place the weekend before the Masters from April 1-4. How does the lottery work? The application is online only and you must have an account registered at or Each lottery is its own application. Once you sign-in, you can apply for up to four passes to any or all of the Masters practice rounds Monday through Wednesday and daily tournament rounds Thursday through Sunday. Advertisement You can also apply for four tickets to the Women's Amateur for the daily rounds. How much will the tickets cost? If you win, the practice rounds cost $125 a ticket for Monday and Tuesday and $150 for Wednesday's practice round and the Par 3 contest. The main rounds Thursday through Sunday will cost $160 a ticket. For the Augusta National Women's Amateur, the first two rounds are free and the final round costs $150 a ticket. What are the lottery rules? You can only apply once from your permanent address. You cannot apply from a second home, business or temporary address. Winners will be notified in July before the payment portal opens July 20. They will have an August deadline to pay for the tickets, which will be mailed out in March.
