‘M*A*S*H' actress Loretta Swit dies: Publicist

She was 87. Swit who played the high-strung but flirty Houlihan for the entire TV run of the smash series, was nominated for 10 Emmy awards for her work, winning two of them. Her death, at her home in Manhattan, was announced by her publicist, who said she was believed to have died of natural causes. 'M*A*S*H,' which sprang from an Oscar-winning 1970 film, aired initially in 1972 and was a hit until it finished in 1983. The comedy was set in a field hospital for the US Army during the Korean War, and starred Alan Alda as Benjamin 'Hawkeye' Pierce. The series tackled a range of issues from the tragic to the light-hearted, and was sometimes seen as a satire on US involvement in Vietnam -- a war that was still happening when it first began airing. 'Few actresses captured the imagination of generations of television viewers with the certainty and charm of Loretta Swit,' a statement from publicist Harlan Boll said. 'As the quick-witted, impassioned Major Margaret Houlihan... Ms. Swit became an American icon.' Alongside an extensive stage repertoire, Swit appeared in over 25 movies, including playing Christine Cagney in the TV movie that became the long-running cop show 'Cagney and Lacey.' Obligations to the makers of 'M*A*S*H' meant she could not continue into the TV series' lengthy run, and the role was ultimately filled instead by Sharon Gless. Other movies during Swit's career included 'Race With the Devil,' a 1975 horror starring Peter Fonda, and 1972's 'Stand Up and Be Counted' with Jacqueline Bisset. - AFP

Hollywood is paying tribute to Loretta Swit after news of her death was announced Friday. According to a police report, the M*A*S*H star died of suspected natural causes at her home in New York City, her publicist, Harlan Boll, announced. After her tenure in the medical war drama, she went on to star in several films, including Freebie and the Bean (1974), Race With the Devil (1975), S.O.B. (1981) and BoardHeads (1998). Alan Alda, Swit's longtime M*A*S*H co-star, paid tribute to her on X. 'Loretta was a supremely talented actor. She deserved all her 10 EMMY nominations and her 2 wins. Man with filet knife arrested after standoff in Mercer County
A man armed with a filet knife was arrested after a standoff in Mercer County Friday morning, according to a social media post from the Celina Police Department. Upon arrival, officers saw Lawson standing in the doorway of the home with a 10-inch filet knife, according to the post. Lawson then barricaded himself inside and a 90-minute standoff began. The post indicates that a 15-year-old was inside the home, but authorities were able to remove the child through a bedroom window. Lawson came out of the house multiple times but wouldn't surrender. A less-lethal shotgun with bean bag rounds was used, but Lawson ran back inside and locked the door, according to the post. As police started breaking down the front door, Lawson tried to run outside through the back door. Officers stopped Lawson at the back of the house and arrested him without further incident, the post said. Lawson was booked into the Mercer County Jail on domestic violence, assault, inducing panic, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest charges. At the time of this incident, Lawson was out on bond for a prior felony charge, the post said. Mercer County Court of Common Pleas records show that Lawson was on bond for a failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer charge.
