KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia remained almost flat at midday today with buying support continuing in selected heavyweights, interspersed with profit-taking led by consumer products and services counters.
At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 0.009 per cent, or 0.13 of-a-point weaker at 1,511.51 from Tuesday's close of 1,511.64.
The benchmark index opened 0.25 of-a-point higher at 1,511.89 and moved between 1,509.42 and 1,512.96 throughout the morning session.
The broader market was negative, with 419 decliners surpassing 288 gainers. Another 441 counters were unchanged, while 1,258 were untraded and 13 suspended.
Turnover stood at 1.62 billion shares worth RM818.59 million.
Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said in a note that interest would persist in gold and oil and gas-related counters, given a prolonged Israel-Iran tension.
'Meanwhile, with Malaysia advancing 11 spots to 23rd in the World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, which measures how business-friendly a country is, we believe investors should continue to look into the construction sector, supported by data centre investments and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) initiative,' it said.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said in a statement yesterday that the latest ranking, up from 34th last year, also reaffirmed the nation's trajectory towards becoming one of the world's top 12 most competitive economies by 2033 as targeted under the MADANI Economy framework.
The stockbroking and financial services company also said that it remains optimistic about the solar sector, as many players reported increasing revenue and profits and are expected to benefit from the country's renewable energy goals.

Malaysia, Thailand To Forge Border Economic Partnership, Uplift Poorer Provinces

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Thailand are working closely to forge a new partnership aimed at uplifting impoverished provinces on both sides of the border, said Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said that by focusing on the poorer provinces in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, the two countries can collaborate to strengthen economic ties, which could drive growth and help address outstanding issues. "So, we still continue to have border disputes, and I am not highlighting too much about Cambodia or Thailand now, because as you know, Malaysia is a maritime country, and we have border issues with all countries. "But that has not stopped us from focusing on our priorities, excellent bilateral relations, peace and security, and working together on all issues – economic, cultural, political, and educational. "I think that should be the way forward," he said during his keynote speech at the 38th Asia-Pacific Roundtable here on Thursday. The 38th APR, held from June 17 to 19, is a premier regional forum organised by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. This year's theme, 'Recalibrating Asia's Frontier', brings together diplomats, scholars and policymakers to address rising geopolitical tensions, shifting power dynamics, and the future of regional cooperation in an increasingly uncertain world. Anwar said Malaysia, as the holder of the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, was fortunate to explore and expand this horizon. "But this year is, of course, a year of significance, not only for our region but also for our shared hopes and aspirations.

Bernama CEO Receives ‘Women Of The Decade' Honour At WEF ASEAN 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin was among the recipients of the Women of the Decade award at the Women Economic Forum (WEF) ASEAN 2025. WEF ASEAN 2025 president Datin Dr Hartini Osman, speaking on the sidelines of the event, said the award honours Nur-ul Afida's leadership and steadfast commitment to the advancement of the media industry. "On behalf of WEF, we congratulate Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida. She was conferred the Women of the Decade award in recognition of her potential and the significant achievements she has made in her field of leadership. 'With this award, we hope it will further inspire her to continue elevating the role of women, not only in Malaysia but globally,' she told Bernama at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) today. Nur-ul Afida was appointed CEO of Bernama on February 27 last year. Before that, in October 2023, she made history as the first woman to be appointed editor-in-chief of the national news agency since its establishment in 1967. A well-recognised figure in Malaysian journalism, Nur-ul Afida was appointed to the Administrative Council of the Malaysian Press Institute on May 16 last year. In recognition of her trailblazing leadership and role in inspiring a new generation of women in journalism, she was honoured with the Luminary Media Award by the National Press Club at its Diamond Jubilee Awards ceremony on Sept 27, 2023. Nur-ul Afida was, however, unable to attend today's award presentation by the Prime Minister's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as she is currently in St. Petersburg, Russia, attending the General Assembly of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies. At the event, Dr Wan Azizah also presented the Women of the Decade award to Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif, and former Communications and Multimedia Ministry Secretary-General Tan Sri Sharifah Zarah Syed Ahmad.

Do Not Underestimate The Importance Of JS-SEZ

BUSINESS ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 19 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has underscored the significance of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), describing it as an extraordinary model of cross-border cooperation that sets a new benchmark for bilateral economic collaboration. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the strong partnership between Malaysia and Singapore has led to rising international interest in JS-SEZ, attracting investors from Japan, China, South Korea and Europe, and positioning it as a new global investment dynamo. 'Do not underestimate the importance of JS-SEZ. This is not an ordinary SEZ. 'Name me one other economic zone that involves two countries, built entirely on mutual trust and the spirit of working as one formidable team. That's what makes JS-SEZ unique,' he said during the closing ceremony of Nikkei Forum Medini 2025. Also present was Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. The Prime Minister also credited the zone's rapid progress to its clear policies, political stability and institutional support from both federal and state authorities. He said this includes the newly established Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre, which he described as a key enabler in expediting investment approvals. 'Every meeting brings new demands. If they don't get approvals at the state level, they come to us. And we facilitate, not for personal gain, but for the greater good. That's why this centre is becoming a showcase for other states and federal agencies to follow,' he said. He acknowledged the contributions of Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB), Khazanah Nasional and the Johor state government in making the JS-SEZ a reality.
