ALLEGIANT AIR WASTES MILLIONS, STILL WON'T PAY PILOTS
WASHINGTON, July 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Allegiant Air pilots represented by Teamsters Local 2118 are raising serious questions about Allegiant's leadership after the company this week sold its failed Sunseeker Resort while continuing to stall contract negotiations for 1,400 union pilots.
The airline claims the sale of its unsuccessful hotel project signals a renewed focus on its core airline operations, but their actions tell a different story.
'Allegiant's executives have wasted billions on failed side hustles while refusing to fairly pay the pilots who actually keep this carrier in the air,' said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. 'Allegiant owes our members over $200 million in hard-earned retention bonuses. The Teamsters demand accountability and a fair contract now from this greedy, corruptible employer.'
Allegiant pilots have been stuck in negotiations for over four years. While others across the airline industry have secured pay increases and improved working conditions in recent years, Allegiant has refused to pay industry standard wages and is asking pilots to make concessions on quality of life and scheduling issues.
Since March 2021, Allegiant's market value has decreased by 78 percent, with a current market cap of $1.3 billion. The company lost $520 million on the sale of its ill-fated Sunseeker Resort, which is equal to over half of the company's current market value. The sale of the South Florida hotel follows a pattern of frivolous spending by the airline. With impractical ventures outside its core airline operations, from sports stadiums to luxury hotels and golf courses, Allegiant has burned millions of dollars on corporate pet projects.
Corporate financial mismanagement has left the company ill-equipped to resolve outstanding contract negotiations for pilots, but the Teamsters continue to call on Allegiant to return to the bargaining table.
'Management at Allegiant has no ability to lead this company. They have no allegiance to the hardworking, dedicated pilots,' said Greg Unterseher, Teamsters Airline Division Director, Above-the-Wing. 'The Teamsters Union has zero confidence that Allegiant will bargain in good faith, but this company must be held to account. We demand they return to the table and end the disrespect of working people now.'

MyKom arrives in Sarawak, out to support mainstream media, not against it
KUCHING (Aug 5): Media Komunikasi Nasional (MyKom) has officially expanded its operations here, positioning itself as an alternative media platform that supports and complements mainstream media, rather than competing with it. According to the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin, MyKom remains a credible and authoritative source within Malaysia's media and public communication landscape. 'I am confident that although it is alternative, MyKom will be recognised, authoritative, and become a key reference in the realm of news and public communication in the country,' he said at the launch here yesterday. He pointed out that in an era saturated with information and growing demands for timely and accurate communication, the need for impactful messaging at the state and community levels had become more critical than ever. 'The launch of MyKom today is a clear signal that Sarawak is also taking this need seriously. I urge MyKom to move forward with courage and integrity, always anchored by the interests of the people. 'Do not be afraid to be a voice of principle. Do not hesitate to highlight stories from rural communities, stories of everyday people, and those that often go unheard in the mainstream media,' he said. Apart from that, Azman also stressed that the media's influence should be used to unite the people rather than divide, and to educate rather than to provoke. 'Media content should aim to strengthen social values, rather than merely chasing viewership or popularity.' Meanwhile, MyKom Sarawak managing director Zulrusdi Mohd Hol said the platform would utilise various social media channels including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X to disseminate news content. 'As a responsible new media outlet, we uphold Article 10 of the Federal Constitution which guarantees the right to speak, express, assemble, and associate. 'We also operate in compliance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Sedition Act,' he said. Zulrusdi said MyKom's mission could be best summarised through a quote by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof during the closing of the Sarawak Journalists Conference last month: 'Truth must be spoken, dignity defended, and hope never extinguished.' Among those present at the event yesterday were MyKom Sarawak advisor Dato Sri Hafsah Harun and MyKom Sarawak chairman Nazib Johari.

Lump sum EPF payout scheme for retirees not feasible, says economist
KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya may encounter a hurdle if it implements a payout scheme to provide lump-sum access and regular income to retirees via the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Economist Dr Geoffrey Williams said that most Malaysians have low savings and low income, which may halt the government's plan due to the lack of funds. "The real problem is coverage. Currently, EPF only has 8.8 million active members, and these have very low savings. "So, even with the new scheme, there is still a pensions adequacy crisis. Millions have no retirement scheme, and those that do have savings are too low to be meaningful," he said. Williams added that pension adequacy cannot be addressed quickly because it requires retirees to have higher savings. "With incomes being low, higher savings are not possible, and actually, people are already working beyond the official retirement age anyway," he said. He suggested that the government establish a non-contributory pensions scheme to top-up the existing funds. He said that the non-contributory pension could be funded by current spending, taxes, a "superfund", or a combination of all of these measures to top up whatever savings people already have. Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is considering implementing a monthly pension scheme under the EPF as part of its efforts to ensure a steady income after retirement. In a Facebook post, Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying yesterday said that the proposed new structure will split the savings into two accounts — a Flexible Savings account, allowing members to withdraw anytime, and an Income Savings account, a periodic payment until funds are exhausted. However, she said that the proposed changes will not affect existing withdrawal rights of current members and will only apply to new members after it is implemented. Currently, there are three funds under every member's name — Account 1, which are meant to be a retirement fund, Account 2 for selected pre-retirement needs, and Account 3, which was only implemented last year for flexible withdrawals. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Employers Federation objected to any compulsory pension payout mechanism under EPF and urged the government to approach the matter with great caution. Its president, Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman, said that the monthly pension payout model must be implemented on a voluntary opt-in basis, and not as a mandatory mechanism. "EPF members should be allowed to choose the proportion of savings they wish to convert into a monthly payout, if any. "A rigid, compulsory payout model may increase financial stress among retirees who need a lump-sum cash flow. "Concerns over restricted access to retirement funds can lead to financial stress, particularly if workers need liquidity for medical emergencies, education, or caregiving responsibilities," he said. He added that any compulsory structure may also increase the demand for salary advances, loans or early retirement which will in turn put pressure on employers and the system. "Younger workers may begin to question the value of contributing to EPF if the system evolves into a rigid payout structure. This could reduce enthusiasm for formal sector employment, encouraging some to shift into the gig or informal economy where contributions are voluntary," he said. He suggested that the government begin with a pilot scheme for low-income earners and conduct extensive consultations with employers, employees and retirement experts to ensure the design meets practical needs. He added that any new model must preserve members' rights to full or partial withdrawal at retirement. "If the government wishes to introduce a separate, government-funded pension fund for the people, especially one with government contributions, then clear conditions for withdrawal and payout structures can be designed accordingly," Syed Hussain said.

Setback for Klang commuters
A longer wait to board: The Shah Alam Line train leaving the Pasar Jawa station in Klang. Train testing and commissioning is underway. — KK SHAM/The Star PETALING JAYA: Prasarana Malaysia's Shah Alam Line (formerly known as LRT3) that connects Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya with Klang is set to miss its widely expected Sept 30 opening date. Just last week, it posted a Facebook update announcing that the LRT sets will have to undergo '24-hour train testing and commissioning' until Oct 30. This means that the entire checklist of electrification, signalling and communications infrastructure has yet to pass regulatory muster, even if all of the physical infrastructure such as stations and track work are completed. On July 30, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in Parliament that the Shah Alam Line is 99% complete, but did not indicate the date of passenger service commencement. When contacted, a Prasarana official declined to provide any specific date, beyond saying 'the project team is still conducting some key tests before they can conclude'. The Shah Alam LRT is a project built, owned and operated by Prasarana. It is an eagerly awaited service as it provides a critical alternative for Klang residents who have to endure service disruptions of the KTM Komuter due to the ongoing Phase II of the Klang Valley Double Track Rehabilitation project. This disruption is set to last for years, with no clear end date. According to rail professionals, rail testing and commissioning is the most challenging phase of a railway project due to the complexity of integrating various systems as this is a high-stakes area that will impact safety and reliability, more so with the complexities of modern rail systems. 'This phase requires meticulous planning, precise execution and thorough documentation to ensure all systems function together as intended. 'It is a process that cannot be rushed through,' said Yuslizar Daud, a railway systems specialist who once headed the Land Public Transport Commission's Rail Division. The seemingly rushed opening of KL International Airport's aerotrain on July 1 is a lesson for all, particularly after electrical problems on July 12 halted a train set just before it reached the satellite terminal building. Passengers had to disembark and walk the rest of the way. To date, contractors are still conducting tests and rectification of the system. Yesterday afternoon, only one aerotrain was available for service, leading to congestion at the airport. As for the KTM Bhd's electric train service to Johor Baru, Sunday Star reported yesterday that the service will not be able to reach Johor Baru this quarter. Questions linger on whether it will be able to meet its target by end of the year. In response, KTMB said the government is committed to the project's full completion in 'a phased approach', though the statement stayed clear of committing to any particular timeline or date.
