People involved in Pahalgam terror attack will get a ‘strong response'; will hunt down those who plotted it: Rajnath
People responsible for the "cowardly terrorist attack" on innocent citizens in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam will soon get a "strong response" to their nefarious acts on Indian soil, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday (April 23, 2025), in the first clear indication of India's possible response to the massacre.
Mr. Singh, while vowing a befitting reply, also said India will not only hunt down the people who perpetrated the attack but will also trace those "sitting behind the scenes" who had conspired to carry out the deadly act on the Indian soil.
The Defence Minister's remarks while delivering the annual Arjan Singh Memorial lecture came a day after 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam in an attack that triggered wide-spread outrage within India and abroad.

Hours before the address, Mr. Singh reviewed the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in a nearly two-and-a-half-hour meeting that was attended by NSA Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
'Yesterday, in Pahalgam, our country lost many innocent citizens in a cowardly attack by terrorists targeting religion. This extremely inhuman act has plunged all of us into deep grief and pain,' the Defence Minister said.
'From this platform, I assure the countrymen that in view of the incident, the government of India will take every step that is necessary and appropriate.

'And we will not only trace those who perpetrated this incident. We will also reach out to those who, sitting behind the scenes, have conspired to carry out the nefarious act on the soil of India,' Mr. Singh said.
The Defence Minister said, 'India is such an old civilization and such a big country that it cannot be intimidated by any such terrorist activities.'
'The people responsible for such acts will get a strong response in the near future,' he asserted.

In the context of cross-border terrorist incidents, Mr. Singh said: "History is witness to the withering away of nations not due to the action of the adversary, but due to the result of their own misdeeds. I hope people across the border look at lessons of history more closely".
Mr. Singh described the attack in Pahalgam as "extremely inhuman" that has "left all of us in deep grief and pain".
'First of all, I express my deepest condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones. In this sad time, I pray to God for the peace of the departed souls.'

'I would like to reiterate India's firm resolve that we have a zero tolerance policy against terrorism. Every citizen of India is united against this cowardly act,' he said.
The high-level meeting chaired by Singh discussed all possible aspects of the situation that emerged in Jammu and Kashmir following the terror attack, the sources said, declining to share further details.
It is learnt that Singh directed the armed forces to enhance their combat readiness and increase the intensity of anti-terror operations.

In the meeting, Army Chief Gen. Dwivedi presented a detailed overview of the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir including deployment of his forces.
Strongly condemning the terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said those behind the "heinous act" will be brought to justice.
Several meetings on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir have taken place since the terror attack. Prime Minister Modi returned to New Delhi this morning after cutting short his two-day trip to Saudi Arabia.

Shortly after landing in Delhi, Modi held a meeting with NSA Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
In his address, Mr. Singh stressed that national security cannot be ensured through import dependency, and the government is working relentlessly towards achieving defence sovereignty.

U.S. Defence Secretary Hegseth faces Congress for first time since Signal leaks, Marine deployment to Los Angeles
U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to field sharp questions from members of Congress about his tumultuous start as Pentagon chief, including his sharing of sensitive military details over a Signal chat, in three separate Capitol Hill hearings beginning Tuesday (June 10, 2025). Lawmakers also have made it clear they are unhappy that Mr. Hegseth has not provided details on the administration's first proposed defence budget, which President Donald Trump has said would total $1 trillion, a significant increase over the current spending level of more than $800 billion. It will be lawmakers' first chance to ask Mr. Hegseth about a myriad of other controversial spending by the Pentagon, including plans to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on security upgrades to turn a Qatari jet into Air Force One and to pour as much as $45 million into a parade recently added to the Army's 250th birthday bash, which happens to coincide with Mr. Trump's birthday on Saturday. Lawmakers may quiz Mr. Hegseth on the latest searing images coming out of the immigration raid protests in Los Angeles. Mr. Hegseth has deployed about 700 active-duty Marines to assist more than 4,100 National Guard troops in protecting federal buildings and personnel. But there are questions about what the troops will have to do and how much it will all cost. Under the Posse Comitatus Act, troops are prohibited from policing U.S. citizens on American soil. Invoking the Insurrection Act, which allows troops to do that, is incredibly rare, and it's not clear if Mr. Trump plans to do it. The commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric Smith, will be on Capitol Hill testifying at a separate budget hearing at the same time as Mr. Hegseth and is likely to face similar questions. While he has talked a lot about making the military more lethal, it was his use of the unclassified, unsecured Signal messaging app that quickly caught public attention. The chat became a public embarrassment because the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, was inadvertently added to it. Mr. Waltz took responsibility for the gaffe, but Mr. Hegseth was roundly criticised for sharing details about the military strikes in this chat and in another one that included his wife and brother. Multiple investigations are looking into his use of Signal. The Defence Department's acting inspector general has been looking into the initial chat at the request of the Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Pentagon's watchdog is also reviewing whether any of Mr. Hegseth's aides were asked to delete any Signal messages. Controversial Pentagon spending While any number of those issues could come up at the House Armed Services Committee hearing Thursday, money issues are more likely to be the focus of the hearings Tuesday in the House and Wednesday before the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. Already defence leaders have been grilled in other hearings on the plans to retrofit the Qatari jet and the costs of the military parade. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has outlined the future of the Indian transport system in major cities of the country, which will have an air pod system and flash-charging electric buses. These transportation initiatives will ease the problem of traffic congestion, bringing relief to the residents from long, tiring journeys. Detailing the government's plan in this direction, Gadkari said that a pod system in the air is being planned along the Dhaula Kuan-Manesar route. 'We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road," the Union Minister told news agency ANI. A pod-based transport system consists of small, driverless electric vehicles that run on raised tracks by either hanging from rails above or running on top of them. They are similar to on-demand taxis, wherein one can call a pod when in need and transit from one place to another without any stoppage. A pod can carry around five to six people. Gadkari said that the government has started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur, which has 135 seats. This bus will run at a speed of 120 km/h and will stop for 30 seconds to recharge and run again. 'We have also started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur with 135 seats. This bus will be executive class with TVs in front. It will run on the road to Nagpur. The bus will have a speed of 120 kmph.
