Belmont Abbey College students convicted for Halloween assault
Two Belmont Abbey College students were convicted after a two-day bench trial in relation to an assault that occurred on Halloween night.
Three students were on trial in front of District Court Judge Michael K. Lands. One student, Darryl Holloway, was acquitted of his charges.
One student, Darius Kane, was convicted of Assault and Battery. He was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment suspended for 12 months unsupervised probation. Isaiah Josue was convicted of Assault and Battery as well as Assault on a female. He was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment suspended for 18 months probation. He was also ordered to pay over $1,000 in restitution to the victim.

The assault occurred on Halloween night of 2024 in a parking lot after an on-campus party. Campus police arrested nine members of the Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball team that night. Five players had their charges dropped just a few days later.
In December, the families of the five players with charges dropped expressed their frustration to Channel 9′s Glenn Counts. The families told Counts that they had spent thousands in bail money and lawyer fees and their students faced humiliation and hostility.
The families called for a public apology from the campus after the incident. When Channel 9 reached out, the school said it had no comment on the matter.

‘Just want to see him home safe': Wooden bear gifted by late husband stolen in Mount Vernon
This story was originally posted on A cherished wooden bear was stolen from the porch of a Mount Vernon home, the police department reported Tuesday. The bear's owner, Merrylee, told 'The Jake and Spike Show' on KIRO Newsradio Wednesday that the bear holds sentimental value, as it was gifted by her late husband as a Christmas present in 1991. 'My husband and I lived in Kirkland at the time, and he had his own wheelhouse tree service in the Redmond Kirkland area, and he had cut a tree down and took the log to a carver out in Fall City, and had this bear carved by this man, I can't remember his name, and that became my Christmas present for 1991 and it was our first Christmas together,' she said. Merrylee would even dress up the bear for different occasions. During football season, he would wear his Seahawks shirt, on Halloween, he was Superman, or sometimes he would be casual with a green bow tie. 'He's a very festive bear,' Jake Skorheim, co-host of 'Jake and Spike,' commented. Merrylee said the bear was wearing a red, white, and blue hat and matching scarf when he was stolen. He is approximately 4 feet tall and weighs 75 pounds. But beyond his charm, the bear is very meaningful to Merrylee. 'Quite a sentimental attachment. My husband passed away in 2018, so this is one of the things that he gave me that is very special to me. And like I say, he's been sitting on my front porch since 1991,' she shared. Unfortunately, Merrylee doesn't have a security camera, and neither do her neighbors. 'I drove around the neighborhood this morning, and I thought to myself, 'Here's all these people out here with all this stuff on their lawns, what made my bear stand out, that they would come up onto my porch?' Because they had to come right up to my front door to get him, and they had to have transportation to take him away. Probably have two men to carry him because he's right around 75 pounds,' she said. Merrylee thinks her stolen bear might have been part of a high school prank, adding she just wants to get it back, no questions asked. 'I just want to see him home safe and sound,' she shared. Charlotte man accused of trying to sexually assault woman after helping her with groceries
Court records obtained by Channel 9 this week say a man offered to help a woman with her groceries before trying to sexually assault her in her own apartment. It happened last week after the woman got off the bus along Monroe Road. Channel 9 Crime Reporter Hunter Sáenz learned that the woman fought back. Kristopher Davis was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree sexual offense. Police say the victim is a woman who is developmentally disabled. 'I think it always hits home a little bit more when it's someone who we know is especially vulnerable,' said Leanna Pai, who works with survivors at Safe Alliance. The domestic and sexual violence resource center says roughly 80% of women with disabilities say they've been sexually assaulted. That's 40% higher than their non-disabled counterparts. 'Someone who is an abuser or might assault someone can definitely take advantage of physical limitations, or cognitive limitations,' Pai told Sáenz. The victim told police she got off a bus with her groceries and Davis walked up, introduced himself, and insisted on helping her carry her groceries. When they got to her apartment, she told police that Davis insisted on coming inside. When he did, he told her, 'Now I'm going to have oral sex with you,' according to court records. Davis is then accused of 'smacking her twice' and also grabbed for her clothing, court documents say. She told officers she was able to run out screaming, and that got the attention of someone at the leasing office, who came outside -- that spooked off Davis. Police say that when the victim went to get help, Davis ran away. He was later caught and taken into custody and held on a $100,000 secured bond. He was then transferred to another county to face additional charges there. Pai says she wants women to know they have a safe place they can go. National Crime Prevention Council Urges McDonald's to End Snapchat Partnership Over Child Safety Concerns
Washington, D.C., June 11, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) is calling on McDonald's to immediately end a newly created promotional partnership with a dangerous social media platform. Snapchat, and its parent company Snap, Inc., are under federal and state investigation for their role in facilitating the sale of deadly drugs, including fentanyl. In a letter to McDonald's CEO, the nation's leading crime watchdog pointed to Snapchat's inherent design features that make it a preferred platform for drug dealers and predators. 'Snapchat is the platform of choice for drug dealers, and it is unsafe for users of any age,' said NCPC Executive Director Paul DelPonte. 'McDonald's should not be promoting a service that endangers the very children it has long supported through Ronald McDonald House Charities and community safety events.' As part of the partnership, McDonald's is offering one month of free access to Snapchat+, the platform's supposed premium version. The plus version includes even more dangerous features, such as enhanced location tracking and expanded messaging capabilities, tools that NCPC says make it easier for predators and criminals to access partnership contradicts McDonald's decades-long commitment to protecting children and fostering safe communities and aligns it with a platform under federal scrutiny for contributing to the fentanyl crisis and child exploitation. McDonald's franchises have a long history of including the organization's well-known mascot, McGruff the Crime Dog®, at events such as National Night Out and Halloween safety programs 'This is not about cancel culture,' the letter states. 'This is about public safety, corporate responsibility, and protecting children.'
