Belmont Abbey students to serve probation for assault
Two Belmont Abbey College students will serve probation for assault. Belmont Abbey College students convicted for Halloween assault In October, men's basketball team members attended a Halloween party on campus. Officers later charged nine players with assaulting a female at that party. Charges against five players were later dropped. Another was acquitted at trial. Two students were convicted of assault and battery. Their prison sentences were suspended instead of 12 to 18 months on probation. One of them also has to pay a thousand dollars to the victim. Belmont Abbey College students convicted for Halloween assault
Two Belmont Abbey College students were convicted after a two-day bench trial in relation to an assault that occurred on Halloween night. Three students were on trial in front of District Court Judge Michael K. Lands. One student, Darryl Holloway, was acquitted of his charges. One student, Darius Kane, was convicted of Assault and Battery. He was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment suspended for 12 months unsupervised probation. Isaiah Josue was convicted of Assault and Battery as well as Assault on a female. He was sentenced to 60 days imprisonment suspended for 18 months probation. He was also ordered to pay over $1,000 in restitution to the victim. Campus police arrested nine members of the Belmont Abbey Men's Basketball team that night. Five players had their charges dropped just a few days later. In December, the families of the five players with charges dropped expressed their frustration to Channel 9′s Glenn Counts. The families told Counts that they had spent thousands in bail money and lawyer fees and their students faced humiliation and hostility. The families called for a public apology from the campus after the incident. When Channel 9 reached out, the school said it had no comment on the matter. North Carolina Catholic college president announces retirement
Belmont Abbey College President Bill Thierfelder announced his retirement on Thursday after 21 years of service at the college. Thierfelder announced that he plans to retire effective Aug. 2, 2025, on the 21st anniversary of his leadership at the college. He began his leadership in 2004 as the 20th president of Belmont Abbey College, a Catholic liberal arts institution. Some of the accomplishments Thierfelder achieved during his time as president include the reinvigoration of the college's Catholic identity, enhancing programs, residence halls, and facilities, and launching a $150 million capital campaign. 'Together with an incredible team of administrators, faculty, and staff, we have achieved tremendous milestones. I am deeply grateful to our students, alumni, and supporters for their commitment to our shared mission. I have overwhelming gratitude to God for giving me this charge and the grace of the confidence to know that I am leaving the college a more secure, more stable, and more faithful place dedicated to His mission.' Thierfelder said he plans to return to Belmont Abbey College in the fall of 2026 as a faculty member. The Board of Trustees is engaging in a national search for Thierfelder's replacement.
