Future is Bright for Academic Partnership Program at Canada's National Nuclear Laboratory as Universities Agree to Five-Year Extensions

CHALK RIVER, Ontario, July 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada's premier nuclear science and technology laboratory, and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), a federal Crown corporation with a mandate to drive nuclear opportunity for Canada, are pleased to announce that they have signed five-year extensions with all nine universities currently participating in CNL's Academic Partnership Program (APP). Developed to ensure Canada's R&D community is ready to fully support the country's ambitious climate change goals through nuclear energy – the APP is helping to establish a talent pipeline for the nuclear industry; encouraging collaborative research projects; and, facilitating joint access to the infrastructure, technology and expertise at Canada's national nuclear laboratories.
Since it launched in 2022, the APP has grown rapidly, beginning with early participants that included McMaster University, the University of Ottawa and Ontario Tech University in 2022; Western University, the University of Waterloo, the University of New Brunswick and Queen's University, who joined in 2023; and, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan, which saw the program expand west in 2024. These renewals extend the original agreements for an additional five-year period, positioning the Academic Partnership Program for continued growth and success.
In its third year, the APP has engaged with over 7,000 students from across Canada. Among the many highlights is the launch of the Undergraduate Student Research Experience with McMaster University – a competitive, 16-week, experiential learning program designed to inspire and prepare future leaders in nuclear science and engineering. A similar program is also underway with Ontario Tech University, known as the Ontario Tech-CNL Graduate Immersive Experience Program. This week-long experience welcomes 15 graduate students to the Chalk River campus to learn about fusion technology, fusion fuel cycles and other fusion-related research, offering the opportunity to engage CNL leaders and tour facilities associated with this clean energy technology.
These programs are in addition to the organization and delivery of numerous student engagement events and opportunities, including mentorship support, participation in guest lectures, student conferences and panel discussions, graduate and undergraduate research poster sessions, and capstone and design projects. CNL staff have directly participated in these engagements, sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm, making each event an enriching experience for students.
'On behalf of CNL, I want to express how excited and energized we are to extend these agreements with all of our university partners, and we look forward to sustaining the momentum we've built with the APP program over the next five years,' commented Dr. Stephen Bushby, Vice-President of Science and Technology at CNL. 'This program comes at a time when the nuclear industry is poised for significant growth, with small and large-scale nuclear reactors planned for construction here in Ontario, and other provinces moving closer towards nuclear deployment for the very first time. To make this clean energy future a reality, we need a new generation of nuclear engineers and technologies, and this program is intended to establish that talent pipeline.'
'AECL is proud to support the Academic Partnership Program, which plays a vital role in building Canada's nuclear future,' highlighted Karen Huynh, AECL's Director of Strategic Programs and Partnerships. 'By connecting students and researchers with our national nuclear laboratories, we are not only investing in the next generation of nuclear professionals, but also fostering the innovation needed to meet Canada's priorities in health, clean energy, safety and security and the environment. These renewed agreements reflect our shared commitment to collaboration, talent development, and scientific excellence. It presents an opportunity for us to work collaboratively in new initiatives such as the Canadian Nuclear Learning School to coordinate education, training, knowledge management and workforce development across Canada's growing nuclear sector.'
For CNL, the APP has already strengthened its reputation as a hub for experiential learning, leading to a 90 per cent increase in co-op hires from universities participating in the program. Even more exciting, 40 per cent of CNL's new hires in the past fiscal year have come directly from APP partners, quickly demonstrating the effectiveness and value of the program as a talent pipeline. Collaborative research projects are also growing, with nine external funding proposals submitted this year, an increase of 125 per cent over the previous year, suggesting improved coordination in research proposal development as the APP continues to mature.
'In the first few years of this program, we've been able to implement a long list of meaningful and impactful engagements with students and future nuclear professionals, and we see lots of opportunities to grow the program in new ways,' added Dr. Gina Strati, Director of the Academic Partnership Program at CNL. 'In particular, we're looking forward to leveraging this university network to drive further innovation in nuclear R&D, with a focus on addressing the priorities of AECL's Federal Nuclear Science & Technology Work Plan.'
Thanks to the support of AECL, CNL has just recently established new scholarship awards to support student education and development at partner universities. Through these agreements, CNL has committed a total of $260,000 in scholarship funding for science and engineering students, to be delivered over a three-to-five-year period. These scholarships not only directly invest in student success, but encourage interest in nuclear science, engineering, and other related disciplines.

CNL and Partners Identified Three Canadian Locations to Advance the Design of Renewable Diesel Production Facilities

CHALK RIVER, Ontario, Aug. 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Canada's premier nuclear science and technology laboratory, in partnership with Expander Energy Inc. (Expander), Fuel Cell Energy (FCE), St Marys Cement (SMC), and Nuclear Promise X (NPX), are pleased to announce that they have identified three Canadian locations as potential sites for the location of renewable diesel production facilities. These facilities would be capable of converting wood waste feedstock into 90 million litres of 'drop-in ready' renewable diesel fuel per year, transforming a waste product into a valuable, low-carbon fuel for the transportation sector. This milestone follows the successful completion of a feasibility study, funded through Natural Resources Canada's (NRCan) Clean Fuels Fund, which demonstrated the economic viability of synthetic diesel production using biomass through water electrolysis. The concept, known as 'e-Syn', encompasses the use of water and water electrolysis as part of an innovative, patented and patent pending process for making bio-synthetic fuels developed by CNL and Expander, called the Biomass Electrolysis to Liquids (BETL™) technology. The project leverages Expander's technology for biomass gasification and bio-synthetic fuel production, and electrolysis technology. The resulting fuel (either bio-synthetic diesel, known as Bio-SynDiesel®, or bio-synthetic aviation fuel, known as Bio-SynJet®) will be comprised entirely of carbon sourced from biogenic (atmospheric) sources, and is expected to have very low life cycle carbon intensity. As part of the feasibility study, a number of potential sites in Canada were evaluated with the intent of selecting one site for a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase of the project. This process culminated in the selection of three locations at sites in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, all of which fulfill the necessary requirements in terms of proximity to utilities, and accessibility to major roads and key resources like biomass, among other factors. Following NRCan's approval, the feed study was extended from one to the three sites, a process that is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2025. 'CNL is thrilled at the results that were generated through the feasibility study and is ready to move into the next phase of the project, which has the potential to eventually produce economical, ready-to-deploy, renewable diesel fuel,' commented Stephen Bushby, CNL's Vice-President of Science and Technology. 'As Canada moves towards a net-zero future, synthetic transportation fuels provide an immediate opportunity for the country to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, with the additional benefit of leveraging waste, such as wood, that may otherwise go to waste. The transportation sector in Canada is responsible for almost 25 per cent of the country's total emissions, so this innovation has the potential to make an important impact toward decarbonizing that sector, as well as Canada's overall carbon footprint.' 'This is not a science experiment – the feasibility study showed that the BETL™ technology can efficiently produce bio-synthetic fuels at prices competitive with existing food competitive Hydrogenation-Derived Renewable Diesel (HDRD) and Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) fuels,' commented Gord Crawford, Expander's President and CEO. 'Preliminary economic assessments indicated strong financial performance for all three sites. For future opportunities to actually deploy this technology, Expander and CNL plan to install a commercially proven electrolyzer as part of the planned Expander Carseland Alberta Gasifier project in order to technically and commercially derisk potential investment in the three sites under development in the CFF program.' The engineering design work will be based on the utilization of 240 dry tonnes of forestry wood waste per day as feedstock to annually produce approximately 30 million liters of renewable diesel per processing facility by using the BETL™ technology. The design of these facilities could also serve as a template for future sites, both nationally and internationally, using a build, own and operate model. Site specific details will be announced in coordination with local partners, including government and Indigenous nations and organizations, in the near future. The relevance of this project is timely in Canada. While increasing the supply of low-carbon electricity, including nuclear generation and other renewable power options, will be critical to reaching Canada's net zero target, synthetic liquid fuels provide an immediate opportunity to decarbonize marine, aviation and other heavy duty transport sectors using existing engines. These clean fuels are 'drop in' ready, providing an attractive opportunity to decarbonize without the need to make major changes to engine design and manufacturing processes. Converting cellulosic biomass, such as lumber mill and forest residues, to synthetic diesel or sustainable aviation fuel, is also an attractive and promising method to produce fuel that complies with North America's ASTM D975 and Europe's CEN 15940 diesel specifications. Several investors, including major offtakers, have expressed interest in participating in any potential projects. Your Next Yelp Reviews May Include an AI Video

The next time you visit Yelp on your phone to check out reviews on the newest eatery, you may be greeted by an AI-generated video. Yelp is rolling out artificial intelligence videos to Yelp's home page feed on its iOS app. The AI videos use large language models to grab text from reviews on an establishment and turn it into an AI-voiced narration (courtesy of ElevenLabs) and captions (courtesy of Amazon Transcribe). Then Yelp uses uploaded photos from user reviews to create a slideshow-like display of what you can eat, drink or dance to. As far as oversight of these AI videos go, neither reviewers nor businesses appear to have any say. Companies can't see the AI videos before they are generated or offer input, and users can't decline to have their reviews or photos used, which raises a number of privacy questions. Viewers of the AI videos will have the choice to report a video as inaccurate or containing offensive content. And Yelp has said that it will be doing broad audits of the videos, which will be periodically updated for establishments as more reviews and photos come in. Speaking to The Verge, Yelp CPO Craig Saldanha said that the company wants to create as many videos as possible, although your own activity on Yelp will dictate whether you see the videos and which ones are shown. If we find any way for you to opt out of having your review content -- possibly from years past -- used in these videos, we'll be sure to let you know. Yelp did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
