125 kg of ganja seized in Thrissur, four arrested
The Thrissur Rural police, under Operation D-Hunt and part of the 2025–2026 School Safety Campaign, seized 125 kg of ganja on Friday that was being smuggled from Odisha to central Kerala in a lorry.
Four persons were arrested in the operation conducted under the supervision of Thrissur Range DIG Harishanker and led by Thrissur Rural SP B. Krishnakumar.
The ganja kept in sacks and hidden under tarpaulin sheets in the lorry was seized during a special highway check. The arrested individuals were reportedly part of a well-organised inter-State drug trafficking network.
The accused were identified as Ashlin, 25, and Taris, 36, both from Alangad, Aluva, 'Kingini' Shijo, 31, from Cherumkuzhi, Peechi, and Jabir, 30, from Thrikkadeeri, Cherpulassery, Palakkad.
Taris is a prime accused in multiple criminal cases, including a murder in Aluva, and the 2022 Chalakudy highway robbery case, where a group brutally assaulted travellers mistaking them for gold smugglers. He had been under police surveillance for a week, which ultimately led to the ganja seizure.
Shijo faces charges in over 12 cases, including ATM break-ins and multiple drug trafficking cases across districts. Ashlin is reportedly an accomplice of Taris in the highway robbery case.
Jabir is the prime accused in the seizure of 167.5 kg ganja in Malappuram, in which he went absconding just a day before sentencing. In that case, the Manjeri court had convicted all accused and handed down a 30-year prison sentence. Jabir has an active lookout circular (LP warrant) against him in connection with the same.
The seizure was made by a joint team comprising officers from the Chalakudy DySP office and the Pudukkad police.
The police have launched a probe into the smuggling route, investigating where along the way the contraband may have been distributed and how much remains in circulation. Mobile phone records and other digital evidence are being scrutinised.

Last Updated: The fraudulent site mimicked the HSSC portal for CET 2025 registration, collecting fees through QR codes. The Haryana Police arrested the key accused behind a cyber fraud that targeted job seekers through a fake Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) website on Friday, as reported by PTI. According to Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Haryana, Sumita Misra, the main accused—whose name has not yet been disclosed—was operating a counterfeit portal created to resemble the official HSSC site. He was arrested from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. A total of six people have been taken into custody in connection with the scam—four from Gorakhpur, one from Kurukshetra, and one from Fatehabad, PTI reported. Misra explained that the gang designed a fake website that closely imitated the HSSC portal for CET 2025 registration. Hosted on a third-party domain, the site collected registration fees through QR codes, deceiving unsuspecting candidates into making payments. Once the scam came to light, the HSSC complained to the Sector-5 Police Station in Panchkula. The fraudulent website was promptly removed from Google, and the QR code used for payments was deactivated. As per an official statement, at least 77 candidates were duped, with a total fraud amounting to approximately Rs 22,530. Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta, who is leading the investigation, urged candidates to use only official government websites ending in . and to avoid transactions through QR codes or UPI IDs. 'Anyone found exploiting the dreams of young aspirants will face strict legal action," she said, adding that suspicious links or payment requests should be immediately reported to the nearest police station or the cybercrime helpline. The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of Haryana Police Commissioner Sibash Kabiraj. Meanwhile, the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the written examination for Assistant Professor (Hindi) posts, conducted on June 1, 2025. The move comes in response to serious allegations of a paper leak, technical disruptions, and security lapses at several exam centres in Panchkula. According to the Commission, the exam faced significant technical problems, particularly related to the printing and sealing of question papers. Murshidabad violence: Charge sheet filed by Bengal police against 13 in father-son murder case
KOLKATA: The West Bengal Police have submitted a charge sheet against 13 people in the father-son double murder case in Murshidabad's Zafarabad violence in April, a senior officer said. The murders of Haragobindo Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40) took place on April 11 during the Dhuliyan-Suti-Shamshergunj communal violence, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district. The riots left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes. The unrest, which lasted from April 8 to 12, had also caused widespread damage to public and private properties, prompting the Calcutta High Court to order the deployment of Central Armed Forces to restore law and order. "We have submitted the charge sheet before the district court within 55 days of the crime and have named 13 people in it," the official said on Friday. In the aftermath of the violence, the police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs which were lodged at various police stations in Murshidabad. According to police reports at the Betbona village where the Das family residence was targeted, the attackers broke down the main door, dragged out Chandan Das and Hargobindo Das, and struck them with an axe in the back. A man reportedly stood guard until they died. Reports also noted that in some attacks, the rioters cut off the water supply to prevent fires from being extinguished. Although the details of those named in the charge sheet or the sections slapped on them were not immediately clear, a fact-finding team set up by the high court had named local Trinamool Congress leader Mehboob Alam, former chairman of the Dhuliyan Municipality, to have directed the attack. The team, while submitting its report before the high court on May 21, had also stated "inactivity and absence" of the state police, and added that the men in uniform did not respond to calls from the locals during the violence. The committee documented that "as many as 113 houses were badly affected in the village of Betbona", many of which were set on fire.
