Modi-Carney meet chance to find ways to reset ties: Government
NEW DELHI: Ahead of PM Narendra Modi's visit to Canada, Indian government said Thursday that PM's meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney will offer an important opportunity to explore pathways to reset the relationship based on "mutual respect, shared interests, and sensitivity to each other's concerns".
Modi will be in Canada next week after almost a decade, following Carney's eleventh hour invitation to him to attend the G7 Summit Canada is hosting at Kananaskis. The leaders will have a bilateral meeting on the sidelines.
"We believe that the forthcoming meeting between the two on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views on bilateral and global issues, and to explore pathways to reset the relationship based on mutual respect, shared interests, and sensitivity to each other's concerns," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Bilateral ties were wrecked by Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau's public allegations of Indian government's role in the killing of Khalistan separatist and Canadian national Hardeep Singh Nijjar. As Carney and Modi look to rebuild the relationship, the former is expected to seek accountability for the murder of Nijjar and Indian PM a crack down on anti-India activities by separatist groups and extradition of wanted terrorists.
"There are existing mechanisms between Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies that have discussed issues of mutual security concern over a period of time. This engagement is likely to continue," said Jaiswal.
According to the official, in their phone conversation last week the leaders had an opportunity to reflect on the India-Canada relationship and the way forward. "India and Canada are vibrant democracies bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties," he said.

The statement said Moscow believed that there was no military solution when it came to allaying Western doubts and fears around Iran's nuclear programme and that diplomacy was the only answer. "We call on the sides to exercise restraint in order to prevent a further escalation of tensions and the descent of the region into full-scale war," the Ministry said.

PM visits AI 171 plane crash site, meets injured victims
Gandhinagar: A day after one of the worst air-tragedies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the Air India 171 plane crash site in Ahmedabad. He met the injured at the civil hospital, including the lone survivor of the tragedy, and chaired a meeting of top Union and state govt officials. Modi also met bereaved family members of former chief minister Vijay Rupani during his visit to the city. The PM spent about 20 minutes at the site inspecting where the Air India Dreamliner 787 crashed moments after take-off on Thursday afternoon. Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and state minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi apprised the PM of how the plane crashed into the hostel building and mess of the B J Medical College. The PM was also accompanied by CM Bhupendra Patel, chief secretary Pankaj Joshi, DGP Vikas Sahay and others. Modi met injured victims, including Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the plane crash. The PM was seen interacting with Viswash for a while before visiting the C7 ward of civil hospital where 25 injured persons are being treated. About 50 injured persons are being treated at the C7 and C8 wards of the hospital. The PM spoke to doctors and other medical personnel at the hospital. "We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families. We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come. Om Shanti," the PM wrote on his X handle after his visits. Posting pictures of his visit to the crash site and the hospital, the PM said, "The scene of devastation is saddening. Our thoughts remain with those who lost their lives in this unimaginable tragedy." Modi further said, "Met those injured in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, including the lone survivor and assured them that we are with them and their families in this tough time. The entire nation is praying for their speedy recovery. " Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been tasked with the inquiry into the incident. On Friday, he posted on his X handle, "We are extending every possible support to the affected families. A thorough investigation is underway and all efforts are being made to uncover the cause of the incident." He also posted that the flight data recorder of the ill-fated plane has been recovered and this marks an important step forward in the investigation. The PM also convened a high-level meeting in Ahmedabad with Gujarat CM, central and state ministers and officials of the Union and state govts to review the progress of relief work and investigations. The London-bound aircraft with 242 people on board, including former chief minister Vijay Rupani, crashed moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. No major economic impact of Iran-Israel conflict, but vigil up: India official

The ongoing Israel-Iran conflict is unlikely to have any major economic impact on India unless it escalates into a broader and protracted regional conflagration but the government is keeping a close watch on the evolving situation, a senior official said. The conflict, however, could potentially stoke volatility in global crude oil prices, capital flows, currency movement and shipping costs in the short term, the official conceded. While it's "too early" to gauge the precise impact on India, the finance ministry and regulators would continue to maintain heightened vigil in view of the volatility across markets, the official told given its strong macroeconomic fundamentals, India is on a strong footing to tide over any such global crisis without much bruise, he said. He also ruled out any sharp and durable impact of the crisis on non-energy commodity prices globally over the medium term. Indian stocks fell on Friday tracking a global sell-off and the rupee depreciated against the dollar as worries about the Israel-Iran conflict weighed down investor benchmark Sensex and Nifty nosedived 0.7% each on Friday. The rupee depreciated 0.6% to close at a two-month low of 86.09 against the greenback, as the dollar index strengthened with investors scrambling for safe haven crude oil prices spiked 12% to $78.5 per barrel in the early hours of Friday morning following the Israeli strike. The prices, however, pulled back to less than $75 a barrel after reports emerged that Israel had not targeted Iran's oil infrastructure but limited its strike to Tehran's nuclear facilities. The Israeli strikes have raised fears if Iran could retaliate by trying to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital choke point for about a fifth of the global oil supply. In that case, shipping and related insurance costs could rise US gold futures inched up more than 1% to touch its peak in nearly two months amid heightened demand for haven assets.
