Chickens at centre of plan to demolish greenhouses at ‘real Downton Abbey'

Telegraph05-05-2025

Greenhouses at the stately home where Downton Abbey was filmed could be demolished to protect the owner's chickens.
The Highclere Estate in Hampshire has applied to knock down three of the 100-year-old buildings.
One of the reasons put forward for the demolition is that they are 'overrun with vermin', which is said to affect Highclere's flock of poultry.
Chickens owned by the Countess of Carnarvon, which are named after Jane Austen characters, live behind the greenhouses in a run known as Highclutch Castle.
Lady Carnarvon has previously posted on social media about how 'cute' the rare breeds are and appeared in a film saying that the area where the flock live on the estate was 'one of her favourite places'.
The plans intend to ensure the 'future usability and longevity' of the estate, the application claimed.
Every season of the award-winning ITV drama Downton Abbey was filmed at Highclere. Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith and Lily James starred in the show that was watched by more than 120 million people worldwide.
The greenhouses, which are not Grade I-listed, are located some distance from the 17th-century castle.
The planning application says the flock – which includes Jane, Lizzie, Kitty, Mary, Lydia and Emma – is at risk because of the 'vermin'. A fourth greenhouse is due to be restored to its original historical appearance.
The greenhouses were built between 1894 and 1909 for agricultural use.
The planning application to Basingstoke and Deane borough council claims: 'The glasshouses that occupy the site are derelict and have fallen into disuse.
'The glasshouses now pose an active risk to health and safety on site, and have now become overrun with vermin, affecting the surrounding agricultural land and nearby chickens.'
The area will be levelled after the removal of three greenhouses, with the fourth to be restored on a like-for-like basis, retaining its original appearance but improving its condition.
The application's design statement reads: 'The implications of the proposed alterations to the existing glasshouses from the Walled Kitchen Garden will be minimal, retaining historic fabric where feasible and only removing it where absolutely necessary.
'The outlined proposals recognise the site as an important part of the Highclere Estate's long history; seeking to ensure its future usability and longevity.'
Historic England was consulted on the plans, and it had no objection to the application on heritage grounds.
In a 2021 video of the Highclere Estate's farming activities, Lady Carnarvon showed off the chicken flock, which at the time numbered more than 20.
'There's nothing better than a fresh laid egg,' she said, before extolling the virtues of the 'lovely cooing, soothing sound' the birds make when being fed.

'I was victim to a grooming gang - when the police turned up, they arrested me'

Jade and Chantelle appeared on Good Morning Britain to talk about their experience of surviving abuse at the hands of one of the UK's grooming gangs, as Keir Starmer launches a statutory inquiry into the scandal A survivor of a grooming gang in High Wycombe has spoken out on Good Morning Britain about the shocking moment she was arrested as a teenager while her abuser walked free. While on ITV this morning (June 16), Jade sadly told viewers: "I got arrested from a 60-year-old man's house. They didn't arrest him, they arrested me." Jade is one of many survivors who have bravely waived their anonymity to highlight what she and others describe as decades of institutional failure. ‌ She appeared on Good Morning Britain alongside Chantelle to talk about how they were the ones who ended up suffering after speaking out about the abuse they faced, rather than the men who mistreated them. Chantelle added: "I am still fighting for justice six years later." ‌ Jade previously appeared in Channel 4 documentary Groomed: A National Scandal. The film told the stories of five women who were exploited, raped and trafficked by organised grooming gangs, many of which were made up of predominantly British-Pakistani men. Jade's abuse began after she left her mother's home to live with her father, who she described as an alcoholic and "raging heroin addict". His drug dealers took her to parties where she was given alcohol, made to feel "special", and gradually pulled into a cycle of exploitation. On the Channel 4 documentary she showed journalist Anna Hall hundreds of text messages that began with party invitations and quickly escalated into demands for sex. She said: "I have gone home with black eyes, ran up the road naked to try and get away and they have picked me up." When asked how many men abused her, Jade replied: "It is in the hundreds, but I try not to go there." Despite being placed under a police protection warning in 2009 after repeatedly going missing, Jade was arrested just weeks later after attending another party. ‌ Although she was still underage herself, Jade was charged and convicted of inciting sexual activity on a minor. She served 14 months in prison and remains on the sex offenders' register — while her abusers have never faced criminal charges. She told GMB viewers that her abuser is still walking free, while she is now unable to go on school trips with her kids because she is classed as a sex offender. Sadly Jade's story is just one of many, as there are survivors across towns like Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford who were ignored when they tried to report their experiences to authorities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recently launched a s tatutory inquiry into the grooming gang scandal. The National Crime Agency has been tasked with leading a major crackdown on perpetrators, and will be reviewing more than 800 reopened cases. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: "The vulnerable young girls who suffered unimaginable abuse at the hands of groups of adult men have now grown into brave women who are rightly demanding justice."
