US seeks extradition of alleged hacker arrested in France

Yahoo9 hours ago

(Reuters) -U.S. prosecutors have charged a British national with data theft and related cybercrime offences, and are seeking to extradite the alleged hacker from France, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday.
Kai West, who was arrested in France in February, was part of a wider group of hackers who were active selling or giving away stolen data on a cybercrime forum, the Justice Department said.
West has been charged with operating the "IntelBroker" online identity, infiltrating victim computer networks, stealing data, selling it, and causing millions in damages to dozens of victims around the world, the department said, adding victims include a U.S.-based telecommunications provider.
A four-count criminal indictment and complaint charging West was unsealed on Wednesday. Two of the counts carry a maximum prison sentence of five years each, while the other two charges carry a maximum of 20 years each.
The Justice Department did not identify the forum where West is alleged to have been selling stolen data, but French media including Le Parisien and Valeurs Actuelles have identified it as BreachForums, a notorious gathering place for data-swapping cybercriminals.
French media said four additional French hackers had been arrested by police on Monday in connection with the investigation.
A representative for West could not immediately be identified to comment.

PSG investigated for allegedly bullying former striker Mbappé

Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe walks on the pitch during the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg soccer match between Real Madrid and Arsenal at the Santiago Bernabeu. Adam Davy/PA Wire/dpa French football star Kylian Mbappé has made new accusations against Paris Saint-Germain following a dispute over outstanding wages with his former club. The striker said he was sidelined by PSG and the Parisian public prosecutor's office launched an investigation into bullying, it said on Thursday. Advertisement With regard to the allegations, French media refers to a practice known as "lofting." This involves clubs separating players who don't want to extend their contracts from the rest of the team. In summer of 2023, PSG travelled to Asia without Mbappé amid a transfer dispute. He was also absent from the Ligue 1 opening game and only returned to team training in mid-August. At that time, Mbappé had already told the club he didn't want to extend his contract, which was to expire in 2024. PSG, however, were reluctant to let him leave on a free transfer. In the end, that was exactly what happened as Mbappé joined Real Madrid last summer for free. Advertisement Following the transfer, Mbappé and PSG got into a dispute over outstanding wages. The player was demanding €55 million ($64.41 million) related to outstanding monthly salaries for April, May and June of 2024, the last third of a bonus payment for his last contract extension and an "ethical bonus." PSG refused to comply to the French league's request to pay Mbappé the sum and the league's appeals committee ruled in favour of Mbappé last October.

Global financial crime watchdog calls for action on crypto risks

By Elizabeth Howcroft PARIS (Reuters) -The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global financial crime watchdog, on Thursday called on countries to take stronger action to combat illicit finance in crypto assets, warning that gaps in regulation could have global repercussions. The Paris-based watchdog said that while progress has been made since 2024 in regulating virtual assets, many jurisdictions still have work to do to combat risks. As of April 2025, only 40 of 138 jurisdictions assessed were "largely compliant" with FATF's crypto standards, up from 32 a year earlier. "With virtual assets inherently borderless, regulatory failures in one jurisdiction can have global consequences," FATF said in a statement. Illicit crypto wallet addresses may have received up to $51 billion in 2024, according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. FATF said that countries continue to face difficulties in identifying who is behind virtual asset transactions. The report is the latest sign of rising concern among financial authorities about crypto-related risks to the financial system. In April, the EU's securities watchdog warned that the expanding crypto sector could pose risks to broader financial stability, especially as links with traditional markets deepen. FATF also raised concerns about the use of stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency pegged to fiat currencies, by "various illicit actors", including North Korea, terrorist financiers and drug traffickers. It said most illicit crypto activity now involves stablecoins. The FBI has said that North Korea was responsible for the theft of approximately $1.5 billion worth of virtual assets from crypto exchange ByBit in February - the largest ever crypto theft. North Korea routinely denies involvement in cyber hacking or crypto heists. Sign in to access your portfolio

EU prosecutors uncover criminal scheme involving Chinese imports via Greece

(Reuters) -European prosecutors have uncovered a criminal scheme involving false documentation of Chinese imports to Europe through the Greek port of Piraeus that defrauded authorities of about 700 million euros ($820 million) in lost customs duties and VAT revenue. The investigation carried out by the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) spans 14 EU countries and involved raids in Greece, Spain, France and Bulgaria, the EPPO said in a statement on Thursday. Ten suspects were arrested, including two customs officers during more than 100 searches conducted at the offices of customs brokers and other locations on Wednesday. Law enforcement agents seized thousands of e-bikes and e-scooters, as well as 480 containers for further checks and verification in the Port of Piraeus, with freezing orders issued to seize real estate, boats and bank accounts. Some 5.8 million euros in different currencies were seized, including 4.75 million euros in Greece, as well as several firearms and other weapons seized in the houses of three of the suspects. Eleven properties in Spain were also seized, as well as 27 vehicles and luxury items, the EPPO said. The EPPO said the scheme involved several criminal networks mainly controlled by Chinese nationals who handled Chinese imports into the EU, their distribution and sales, as well as money laundering and sending the profits back to China, the EPPO said. After the goods from China arrive in the EU, mainly through the port of Piraeus, they are undervalued or misclassified to evade custom duties, cleared by customs brokers and sold to companies in other EU states through the scheme designed to avoid the VAT payment, the EPPO said. It added that the criminal organisations under investigation produce the false invoices and transport documents to conceal the real destination of the goods, and recruit a network of sham companies that sell the products at very competitive prices, since VAT remains unpaid and customs duties and anti-dumping fees are largely evaded.
