Social networks have become one of the most significant sources of diverse information that is hard to quantify numerically. Millions of people discuss stock prices daily, despite not being directly involved in the stock market. Even those with limited knowledge of finance feel the impact of market fluctuations on the economy and their personal wealth. These emotions shape public opinion, which businesses must consider in their strategies.
Social sentiment analysis is used to study these processes. It assesses how people and society react to events related to securities. In the current reality, where a viral tweet can trigger a market crash, this has become a powerful and useful tool.
If Argentina's President Milley had utilized sentiment analysis, he might have avoided the impeachment threat after his reckless endorsement of the LIBRA cryptocurrency, which caused its price to plummet, as reported by Yahoo.com. In February 2025, small businesses that the cryptocurrency was intended to support lost billions in just hours.
Social analysis is a technology used to evaluate the emotional climate and reactions of internet users to specific events, often unrelated to the economy. Emotions influence people's thinking and actions, which is crucial for businesses. This information helps predict changes and can subtly influence them.
For example, after Donald Trump's re-election to a second term, his media strategy shifted. During his first term, as Yahoo.com reports, he frequently praised the U.S. economy and the stock market's growth, but such posts have now virtually disappeared from his social media. This shift could point to his team possibly using sentiment analysis to guide decisions.
Previously, sentiment analysis was based on official reports and media publications. However, this approach has a significant drawback: The information is delayed. Social media, in contrast, provides instant coverage, but analysts struggle to process large data volumes in real time. AI helps solve this problem.
The primary sources of data for sentiment analysis include:
• Popular social networks.
• Finance-focused forums, like StockTwits and Yahoo Finance.
• Finance-related blogs.
• News platforms.
• Expert opinions and statements from public figures.
The last point is crucial because it generates news and sparks discussions among experts and the general public. Some leaders use social media to influence the stock prices of their companies. They carefully craft their posts to be interpreted in multiple ways, making it difficult to hold themselves accountable, even though attempts are made, as TheNationalDesk.com notes.
There are three key methods used in sentiment analysis:
• Natural language processing (NLP) can help extract information from text and messages.
• Sentiment categorization separates sentiments into 'positive,' 'negative' and 'neutral,' with scores assigned to each category.
• Identifying dominant emotions such as fear, anxiety, and greed within society is also important.
For example, CNN.com reported that U.S. consumer sentiment dropped 10% in February compared to January due to growing pessimism among 62% of Americans. In December, they were optimistic about the new administration's ability to curb inflation, but this did not happen. A decline in consumer sentiment is a significant blow to the economy.
Common tools for sentiment analysis include:
• Google Cloud NLP for text analysis.
• IBM Watson for sentiment shifts through AI.
• FinSentS for extracting financial insights from sentiment data.
• Coytx.com for analyzing community sentiment.
Investors and traders need to react quickly to events that may prompt stockholders to buy or sell. For example, positive news about a company or reports of a catastrophic mistake by top management. In this case, acting fast is crucial, before people begin trading on the news.
AI that analyzes social sentiment helps by tracking changes and predicting how people will react in terms of buying or selling stock. This gives traders an edge, allowing them to forecast stock price movements more accurately.
Even AI-based analysis does not eliminate several challenges:
• Fraudulent Activity: Forbes.com estimates that 48% of all business-related messages contain false or irrelevant information.
• Discrepancies Between Sentiment And Actions: People may feel happy about something, but this doesn't guarantee they'll buy stock, especially if they lack the funds.
• Manipulation Of Sentiment: Disappointment after learning the truth can affect decisions.
• Human Factors: Recognizing sarcasm or humor can be difficult, especially across different languages and cultures.
• Short-Term Predictions: Sentiments are volatile, so sentiment analysis is unreliable for long-term investments.
As machine learning technologies improve, AI's prediction accuracy could also increase. AI will better understand human nature, emotions and motives.
The integration of alternative data sources, such as web traffic and app data, could help provide deeper insights into how people's sentiments are expressed, not just through social media posts but also through other activities.
The combination of sentiment analysis with blockchain technology could also help predict events on cryptocurrency exchanges, a rapidly growing field.

While the clash between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump captivated Washington on Thursday, another drama was playing out behind closed doors over a bill to regulate the $250 billion market for stablecoins, which could transform America's relationship with the dollar, upend the credit card industry, and benefit both Musk and Trump. The bill, the GENIUS Act, is poised to pass the Senate within days. But a prominent Republican, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, said that he will vote against the bill in its current form, warning that it would hand too much control of America's financial system to tech giants. 'It's a huge giveaway to Big Tech,' Hawley said in an interview. Hawley, who previously voted against the bill, is concerned that the legislation would allow tech giants to create digital currencies that compete with the dollar. And he fears that such companies would then be motivated to collect even more data on users' finances. 'It allows these tech companies to issue stablecoins without any kind of controls,' he said. 'I don't see why we would do that.' Similar worries scuttled an effort by Meta to get into stablecoins. In 2019, Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, among others, raised 'serious concerns' about Meta's cryptocurrency initiative, called Libra and then Diem. It abandoned the project in 2022. The GENIUS Act has exposed divisions in both parties. Democrats like Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts oppose the bill, warning it would make it easier for Trump, whose family announced its own USD1 stablecoin in March, to engage in corrupt practices. But Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., a co-sponsor of the bill, has argued that it would provide regulatory clarity to the industry, and contends that the legislation includes 'robust consumer protections.' Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., a co-sponsor, said the bill would bolster demand for U.S. Treasury notes and bonds, as well as the dollar. Stablecoins are often backed by short-term U.S. Treasurys and dollar deposits. Yet there are other Republican skeptics in the Senate that include Rand Paul of Kentucky, John Kennedy of Louisiana and Jerry Moran of Kansas. Paul has argued that the bill would add needless federal regulations. Hawley's frustrations with the bill have only grown as the bill took shape. His office submitted an amendment that would place limits on Big Tech's push into stablecoins. Hawley's draft amendment was used as the basis for writing a new provision requiring that publicly listed, nonfinancial companies such as Meta secure approval from a new regulatory body called the Stablecoin Certification Review Committee before it could issue stablecoins. That provision has gained traction with other senators. But Hawley says Republican negotiators 'gutted' key parts of his amendment that would safeguard against the risks of letting tech companies issue their own digital currencies, and that he no longer supports it. 'It's essentially window dressing,' he said. Some Democrats oppose the proposed guardrails, but for another reason: that they could benefit Musk, according to a person familiar with the discussions. These lawmakers worry that private companies including Musk's X and OpenAI would not have to undergo the more stringent regulatory vetting process. Such companies 'could issue stablecoins with abandon, and that seems tailor-drafted for Elon Musk and his X platform,' said Hilary Allen, a professor at American University's Washington College of Law. Musk recently announced that X Money, a crypto token designed for payments on his social media platform, would enter beta testing soon. X Money did not respond to a request for comment. (Several Republicans said that Musk wasn't a factor in drafting the bill. Lawmakers had considered sorting companies based on revenue or user count, but ultimately decided on the public-versus-private test as the cleanest way to capture such firms, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions.) Democrats plan to introduce an amendment that would bar Big Tech companies -- publicly traded and private -- from creating their own stablecoins, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. Hawley said he would support such an amendment but was skeptical of its prospects. There is also a potential clash with the House. While the White House is pressuring Congress to pass the GENIUS Act, a competing House bill, the STABLE Act, calls for different regulatory requirements and a two-year moratorium on certain kinds of stablecoins. That, and the CLARITY Act, a recently proposed bill defining the broader market structure for digital assets, could complicate what shape a law would resemble. 'I've heard everything' is still on the table, said Tim Massad, a research fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and former chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. (Getty image) Attention voters in Central Falls and Rhode Island's Senate District 4: The deadline to register to vote or change your affiliation to participate in special city and legislative elections is days away. Voters have until 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, to register or change party affiliation ahead of the July 8 Democratic Senate District 4 primary and a special city election in Central Falls. Forms can be completed online at or by mailing or dropping off a paper form at your municipal board of canvassers office. In Senate District 4, spanning North Providence and a small section of Providence, four Democrats have signaled their intent to run for the open seat left vacant after former Senate President Dominick Ruggerio died in April. There is also one Republican and one independent who have declared they are running, and will compete in an Aug. 5 general election. Senate candidates must submit nomination forms with 100 valid signatures from voters by June 10 to have their name appear on the ballot. Central Falls will hold special elections — without a primary — on July 8 for an open seat on the City Council alongside a ballot question over changes to the structure of the city school board. One candidate, Anthony Solano, will appear on the ballot for the open City Council District 4 seat, having already submitted the required signatures by the May 7 deadline. Close behind the registration deadline is a second key date for primary voters: The deadline to apply for a mail ballot. Applications are already available online, due back no later than 4 p.m. June 17. Applications sent by mail must be postmarked by the Aug. 20 deadline. Another special election is slated for Aug. 5 in Coventry to decide two seats on the Coventry Town Council. Three candidates — Richard Houle, Kathy Farwell and Robert Delellis — have declared their intent to run in the nonpartisan race, for which there is no primary. Coventry voters have until Sunday, July 6, to register to vote. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the ride-hailing giant is exploring the use of crypto as a payment method, which marks the third time the company has made the claim since 2021. Speaking at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco on Thursday, Khosrowshahi said the company is in the 'study phase' of evaluating stablecoins for operational use. 'I think stablecoins are one of the more interesting instantiations of crypto that have a practical benefit beyond being a store of value,' Khosrowshahi said. Uber was an early member of the Diem Association (formerly Libra), joining in 2019 to support Meta's now-defunct stablecoin initiative aimed at reshaping global payments. 'You can have your opinions on Bitcoin, it's a proven commodity, and people differ on where it's going. But stablecoins seems quite promising, especially for global companies moving money around internationally,' Khosrowshahi continued on Thursday. 'That's super interesting to us, and we're definitely going to take a look.' The remarks echo what Khosrowshahi told CNBC in September 2021, when he said Uber would 'look into' accepting BTC and other cryptocurrencies as payment. At the time, he dismissed any plans to put crypto on the company's balance sheet, saying, 'We are going to keep our cash safe.' Later, in February 2022, Khosrowshahi told Bloomberg that the company would 'absolutely' accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment at 'some point' in the future, but emphasized that the time wasn't right yet. 'We're having conversations all the time,' Khosrowshahi said at the time. 'As the exchange mechanism becomes less expensive and becomes more environmentally friendly, I think you will see us leaning into crypto a little bit more.' When he made crypto-related comments in 2021, BTC traded flat for the next three months. However, his February 2022 comments came weeks before the beginning of an industry-shaking major market correction, which kicked off later that spring.
