Georges St-Pierre praises 'complete package' Belal Muhammad ahead of UFC 315
Georges St-Pierre had high praise for UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.
Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) makes his first title defense against Jack Della Maddalena (17-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) May 10 in the UFC 315 headliner (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at Bell Centre in Montreal.
Muhammad has reiterated the phrase, "GOAT is the goal," as he looks to surpass former nine-time UFC welterweight champion St-Pierre. "GSP" complimented Muhammad's well-rounded style.
"Belal is the complete package," St-Pierre told Bloody Elbow. "He's good everywhere and he's got a very awkward style that throws a lot of people off, especially standing up in the striking department. Jack, on the other side, he's on a tear. He's got a good momentum, he's on a winning streak and it's going to be an interesting fight.
"On one side, Jack – I think could have the advantages in the striking department. But it's not only a kickboxing match – it's mixed martial arts, and that's when I believe if I'm Belal Muhammad, that's where you take advantage of it. I think he's got more tools to win, but that doesn't mean that he's going to win."
St-Pierre doesn't look at Muhammad vs. Della Maddalena as just a grappler vs. striker matchup, but explained what makes Muhammad so effective.
"It's always about cracking the code, and he's the champion for a reason," St-Pierre said. "Nobody has cracked the code so far and Belal's style is very aggressive. He puts a constant forward pressure and he makes guys fight on their heels. He's very good at changing levels and changing the momentum of the fight and that's his main asset. That's his bread and butter. Jack, on the other side, is a very good striker."

Insider Has Important Update on Potential Eagles Trade Target

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Several notable NFL players are holding out in hopes for a new contract this summer. Fortunately for the Philadelphia Eagles, they seem all good on that front. Still, looking across the league, the Eagles might be keeping their eyes on some sticky situations elsewhere. Recently, there have been some suggestions for Howie Roseman to pounce on an opportunity in Ohio, as the Cincinnati Bengals deal with a holdout situation involving the dominant pass-rusher, Trey Hendrickson. Last week, Hendrickson was one of a handful of star players to miss mandatory minicamp. He wants a new deal, and that's clear. Before camp, Hendrickson and the Bengals were reportedly paused on extension discussions. Trey Hendrickson #91 of the Cincinnati Bengals celebrates in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium on December 22, 2024. Trey Hendrickson #91 of the Cincinnati Bengals celebrates in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Paycor Stadium on December 22, Sunday, ESPN reported that the two parties are working to get back on the same page. "The two sides have resumed communication on his contract and future with the team, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Sunday," ESPN reported on Sunday. "...This is a positive turn in what has been a fierce stalemate. Hendrickson did not participate in any of the team's offseason workouts, including last week's mandatory minicamp. By missing the three-day session, Hendrickson was subject to fines of nearly $105,000." Carrying four Pro Bowl nods and a First-Team All-Pro acknowledgement, Hendrickson is at the top of his game as a defensive end in the NFL right now. More Eagles News: Eagles Targeted By Disgruntled Ex-Player's Massive Statement While the Bengals could certainly use his services, there are a handful of teams out there who probably wouldn't mind taking him off Cleveland's hands, depending on the cost to acquire the extension-needy star. The Eagles would certainly benefit from an addition like Hendrickson, especially considering the losses they've suffered since winning the Super Bowl. Multiple defensive linemen left in free agency, signing lucrative deals elsewhere. The fact that the Eagles allowed a player like Josh Sweat to walk proved that they are thinking about the future, knowing they need to break the bank on some younger homegrown players. If the rules applied to a guy like Sweat, who spent his entire career with the Eagles, then they would have to apply to Hendrickson as well. Never say never when it comes to Howie Roseman in the trade market, but Hendrickson's chances of going to Philadelphia were already slim. The fact that extension talks have picked back up, that could be a sign that Hendrickson is one of the top names off the trade block soon.

Miranda Maverick reveals devastating injury suffered in UFC Atlanta loss to Rose Namajunas

Miranda Maverick reveals devastating injury suffered in UFC Atlanta loss to Rose Namajunas Miranda Maverick had to battle through some major adversity in her competitive loss to Rose Namajunas. Maverick (15-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) dropped a unanimous decision to Namajunas in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 69 co-main event at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Maverick said she tore her ACL at some point in Round 2 – likely during the grappling exchanges when Namajunas (14-7 MMA, 12-6 UFC) took her down around a minute-and-a-half into the round. "Not the result I wanted but I fought with what I had. My ACL was torn in the second round (i'll have to rewatch to know exactly when but I think it was during a takedown exchange)," Maverick wrote on Instagram. "I never got dropped, but I was unstable on my legs so as soon as I got hit in the third round my leg buckled. I'm blessed I was able to make it to the end of the fight and I'm honored that I got to share the cage with the legend @rosenamajunas 🙏🏼😎🇺🇸 i'll take this lay off in stride and you will see me again! But for now time to recover and figure some things out." Namajunas dropped Maverick with a left hook in Round 3, which Maverick said was a result of her injured knee buckling. The loss to Namajunas snapped Maverick's four-fight winning streak.

Emotional Phil Rowe ready to assert himself at welterweight after UFC Atlanta

Emotional Phil Rowe ready to assert himself at welterweight after UFC Atlanta Show Caption Hide Caption UFC on ESPN 69: Phil Rowe post-fight interview UFC on ESPN 69 winner Phil Rowe talks to MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight after his TKO victory over Ange Loosa in Atlanta. ATLANTA – Phil Rowe met the media Saturday after his third-round TKO win over Ange Loosa at UFC on ESPN 69. Rowe (11-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) was down two rounds on all three scorecards against Loosa (10-5 MMA, 2-3 UFC) after being outwrestled for a large part of the fight. But he turned the tide and after he knocked out Loosa's mouthpiece, Rowe put together a barrage that eventually ended the fight in the final minute. An emotional Rowe said the win, which snapped a two-fight skid, was an important one. "I just needed this," Rowe said at his post-fight news conference. "I'm so much better than I show. I'm just tired of not showing what I can do. I've got a lot of people counting on me. "I'm one of the most skilled guys at welterweight. For me, it's just me and my mind. I've just got to get over that mental hurdle. I've got better jiu-jitsu than these guys, better boxing, better defense. I'm just in there fighting myself most of the time. Once I can just learn to let go and let my skill set take over – most of the time, I'm just in there battling myself." Check out Rowe's post-fight news conference in the video above.
