Panama stun ‘painful' USA to reach Nations League final
Cecilio Waterman scored a stoppage-time winner as Panama stunned defending champions the United States 1-0 to book their place in the CONCACAF Nations League final on Thursday.
In a shock result that came in Mauricio Pochettino's first competitive match in charge of the United States, Waterman slammed home a low angled finish in the fourth minute of stoppage time to send the holders crashing out at a half-empty SoFi Stadium.
The result sends Panama into Sunday's final, where they will face either Mexico or Canada, who play in Thursday's other semi-final.
But the defeat sends US coach Pochettino back to the drawing board after a performance the Argentine described afterwards as 'really painful.'
'I am very, very disappointed,' Pochettino said. 'I could see that the way we approached the game and start wasn't in the right way.

Australian F1 driver Doohan calls for online abuse to stop
Australian Formula One driver Jack Doohan has pleaded for online abuse of his family to stop after being targeted on social media. The 22-year-old, son of former motorcycling world champion Mick Doohan, was this month dropped by the Alpine team after only six races. He was replaced by Argentina's Franco Colapinto, who finished 16th at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Italy on Sunday following a big crash in qualifying. Writing to his nearly 500,000 followers on Instagram, Doohan said a fake post attributed to his father had been created on there to paint the elder Doohan in a bad light. 'Please stop harassing my family. I didn't think I would have to get to this point,' Doohan wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of what he said was the fake post. It showed a picture of Colapinto after a crash and Doohan senior supposedly commenting, 'Very impressive'. 'Multiple Argentine outlets falsely reported the fabricated image, which triggered the online abuse of my family,' Doohan, now a reserve driver for Alpine, wrote. A separate Alpine statement also called for an end to the abuse. 'We encourage everyone to remember that behind the visor of these superhuman athletes there is a person, an individual with feelings, family, friends and loved ones,' the team wrote. 'As a team we cannot condone online abuse and urge all fans of this sport we love to be kind and respectful.' The next race is in Monaco this weekend.

More misery for Messi and Miami with Florida derby defeat
AFP | Miami Lionel Messi's frustration grew as Inter Miami's miserable run continued with a 3-0 loss at home to Orlando City in Major League Soccer on Sunday. The Florida derby defeat leaves Miami with one win from their last seven games in all competitions and they slip to sixth in the Eastern Conference with Orlando leapfrogging them. Messi had just two shots on target and scuffed a free-kick as his own form slumped with that of his team. 'Now we'll truly see if we're a team in difficult times, because when everything's going well it's very easy,' Messi told Apple TV. 'When difficult times come, that's when we have to be more united than ever, be a true team, and pull ourselves together,' he added. Messi questioned the refereeing but in truth the loss had little to do with officiating and much to do with shambolic defending, a disjointed midfield and punchless attack led by the rapidly fading Luis Suarez. Orlando grabbed the lead in the 43rd minute with a goal of absurd simplicity. Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese launched the ball down field and Luis Muriel ran clear and slotted past Oscar Ustari. The visitors were getting plenty of joy from going direct against a Miami back-line which was all at sea and Argentine Martin Ojeda should have done better when he found himself clear on goal but blasted over. Coaches 'failing' team Miami's veteran keeper Ustari made a fine double save but then the 38-year-old found himself to blame for Orlando's second goal. The ball fell to Marco Pasalic on the edge of the box and his low shot went through the hands and legs of Ustari. Miami coach Javier Mascherano threw on attacking players in a bid to retrieve something from the game but it was in vain. In the fourth minute of stoppage time Duncan McGuire broke down the left and his low cross was slotted home by Icelandic forward Dagur Thorhallsson to wrap up an impressive performance from the visitors.

Sinner could face teenaged compatriot on return from doping ban
AFP | Rome Italy's tennis world number one Jannik Sinner's first opponent on his return from a three month doping ban in the Italian Open could be compatriot Federico Cina. Sinner has been given a bye into the second round where he awaits the winner of 18-year-old Cina's match with Argentine Mariano Navone. The three time Grand Slam champion returns to action this week following the ban, agreed with t h e Wo r l d Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after he twice tested positive for traces of clostebol in March last year. WADA accepted Sinner did not gain any competitive advantage from the banned substance, and he bore no fault for an accidental contamination. The 23-year-old hasn't played since retaining his Australian Open title, earlier this year. He won't face his big rival Carlos Alcaraz before the final, with world number seven and Madrid Open winner Casper Ruud a potential opponent in the quarter-finals. World number three Alcaraz withdrew injured from the Madrid tournament and has not yet arrived in Rome. The Spaniard could face Britain's Jack Draper, beaten by Ruud in the Madrid final, in the last eight.
